UK confirms Iran unsuccessfully targeted Diego Garcia base – POLITICO

U.K. Royal Air Force jets and other British military assets are “continuing to defend our people and personnel” in the region, as the U.K. has also given permission for the U.S. to use British bases for “specific and limited” defensive operations, they said. Iran’s targeting of Diego Garcia occurred before the U.K. on Friday confirmed that U.S. use of its bases includes defensive operations against “missile sites and capabilities being used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.” The access to U.K. bases has been granted for RAF Fairford in the U.K. and Diego Garcia. Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on each other on Saturday, the latest in a string of attacks since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Tehran in late February. The U.S. is sending thousands more Marines to the Middle East, according to media reports, even as U.S. President Donald Trump broached “winding down” American military operations in the region.  Source link

Iran missile attack on UK-US Diego Garcia military base raises fears London could be within striking distance

Iran missile attack on UK-US Diego Garcia military base raises fears London could be within striking distance

Iran launched two ballistic missiles at Britain’s Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean in a dramatic escalation of tensions, US officials have said. The missiles, fired towards the joint UK-US military facility in the Chagos Islands, both failed to hit their target. One is believed to have been intercepted by a US warship, while the other did not complete its flight. The strike marks the first time Tehran has deployed intermediate-range ballistic missiles in the conflict, weapons capable of travelling far greater distances, and signals a significant step up in the confrontation. Military analysts say the attempted strike on Diego Garcia, roughly 3,800km from Iran, could point to a longer-range capability than previously assessed. If confirmed, the strike would signal a capability that extends well beyond the Gulf, with Paris in range and London no longer comfortably out of reach. The attempted attack came as Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, issued a warning to the UK, accusing Sir Keir Starmer of “putting British lives at risk” by allowing US forces to operate from British …

21/03/2026 – 15:26 ‘Nothing but impunity afforded to Israel’: Lebanese front overlooked as strikes intensify Lebanon is the second front of the war in the Middle East. While there has been excellent reporting by domestic and foreign press, FRANCE 24’s media show Scoop asks why there hasn’t been more international coverage. There has been “nothing but impunity afforded to Israel” since the Gaza war, said Rania Khalek, a Lebanese-American journalist with BreakThrough News, adding that she feels terrorized as Israel continues to strike Lebanon. 21/03/2026 – 15:06 Iran conflict escalates as strikes signal wider regional risks As the Iran conflict enters its fourth week, strikes on nuclear sites and a reported attack on a US-UK base signal further escalation. With no clear exit in sight, fears are mounting of wider instability and humanitarian fallout. “The attack on Diego Garcia is an escalation… it’s a joint US-UK base, not just US territory – that in and of itself is definitely an escalation,” said Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project and senior adviser at the International Crisis …

Trump Tells Starmer ‘Do Not Give Away Diego Garcia’ As US May Need Island To Attack Iran

Trump Tells Starmer ‘Do Not Give Away Diego Garcia’ As US May Need Island To Attack Iran

Update(1504ET): President Trump has come up with another key argument for why Britain must not “give away” the key Indian Ocean territory and military base in the Indian Ocean – Diego Garcia. He says it will be crucial for use in an potentially imminent attack on Iran. “Should Iran decide not to make a deal, it may be necessary for the United States to use Diego Garcia, and the Airfield located in Fairford, in order to eradicate a potential attack by a highly unstable and dangerous regime,” Trump wrote in a fresh Truth Social post. He also dubiously stated that Iran could potentially retaliate on the UK and other “friendly countries” – making Diego Garcia highly strategic in a Western allied campaign against the Islamic Republic.  “Prime Minister Starmer should not lose control, for any reason, of Diego Garcia, by entering a tenuous, at best, 100 Year Lease,” Trump wrote. At this moment the Trump-assembled armada threatening Iran includes two aircraft carriers, a dozen warships, hundreds of jets, and advanced air defenses. Over 150 US military …

Donald Trump tells Keir Starmer ‘do not give away Diego Garcia’ in fresh attack on Chagos Islands deal | Politics News

Donald Trump has launched a fresh broadside on the UK’s Chagos Islands deal with Mauritius, saying Sir Keir Starmer is “making a big mistake”. In a post on his Truth Social platform, the US president warned against the potential loss of a US-UK military base on Diego Garcia, which the UK is retaining through a 99-year lease of the island. “Our relationship with the United Kingdom is a strong and powerful one, and it has been for many years, but prime minister Starmer is losing control of this important Island by claims of entities never known of before,” said Mr Trump. Mr Trump said Sir Keir “should not lose control, for any reason, of Diego Garcia, by entering a tenuous, at best, 100 Year Lease”. He added: “This land should not be taken away from the U.K. and, if it is allowed to be, it will be a blight on our Great Ally. We will always be ready, willing, and able to fight for the U.K., but they have to remain strong in the face …
