Laufey, EJAE, Amy Allen, Suki Waterhouse on ASCAP Honors

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers held its pop music awards last week, honoring Grammy Award-winning musicians Laufey, Amy Allen and EJAE, along with several other musicians at a ceremony in Los Angeles. Laufey was presented with the Creative Voice Award by fellow singer-songwriter Suki Waterhouse. The award recognizes society members whose “significant career achievements are informed by their creative spirit and their contributions to the role that a creator can play in the community,” according to a release, and has been given to other musicians like Questlove, Wyclef Jean and Lyle Lovett. “This is such an amazing community of writers, artists, producers, it’s composers. It’s really to be honored for music that I’ve created,” the singer told The Hollywood Reporter before the ceremony. “It’s something that I wish I could go back and tell my younger self because I never thought I’d be able to take all my thoughts and musical inspirations together and create a cohesive product,” she continued. “I wasn’t one of those kids that was at 10, writing songs …

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Songwriter EJAE Put Her Whole Heart—and Her Past—into “Golden”

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Songwriter EJAE Put Her Whole Heart—and Her Past—into “Golden”

For over a decade, Kim Eun-jae trained to become a K-pop idol under SM Entertainment, one of South Korea’s top agencies. But the label deemed her too tall and her voice too low and husky—and ultimately decided not to debut her. “After getting dropped, my dream to become a singer—I let that go,” the musician, who goes by EJAE, tells Vanity Fair over Zoom. But that rejection turned out to be a “redirection,” as the Korean American singer-songwriter famously declared in her Golden Globes acceptance speech last month. Following her failed attempt at K-pop stardom, EJAE found solace in songwriting—a decision that would eventually lead her to cowrite and perform many of the songs from the blockbuster film KPop Demon Hunters, including the Grammy-winning hit “Golden”. “I was very determined to get through the depression, and what helped me was songwriting. It was a happy accident,” she says. “I was so obsessed with it, and it was helping me so much, I gave it my all. I was desperate to be healed, and it became …

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Stars Electrify BAFTA Awards With ‘Golden’

Netflix‘s KPop Demon Hunters singing voice stars took the stage at the BAFTA Film Awards in London on Sunday evening, getting a game crowd grooving. In their first-ever live performance outside the U.S., EJAE, who provides the singing voice for Rumi, Audrey Nuna, who sings Mira’s lines, and Rei Ami, who stars as the singing voice of Zoey, performed their Grammy-winning hit “Golden” at Britain’s biggest movie awards night. Cameras showed audience members nodding along, shaking their shoulders and otherwise getting into the music. “Performing at the EE BAFTA Film Awards is a golden moment that our younger selves could never have imagined,” the trio had said when they were unveiled as performers. “We’re so proud to represent Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters and spread the film’s positive message to fans around the globe.” The movie tells the story of three women who are demon hunters and use their singing voices to create a magical barrier against demons called the Honmoon. Emma Baehr, executive director of awards & content at BAFTA, highlighted at the time that the Sony-produced …

KPop Demon Hunters’ EJAE on “Golden,” Oscars Nerves on Awards Chatter

KPop Demon Hunters’ EJAE on “Golden,” Oscars Nerves on Awards Chatter

For EJAE, the Korean-American singer/songwriter who is the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of film students at Chapman University, 2026 — like 2025 before it — is shaping up to be truly, well, golden. In 2025, “Golden,” the banger tune that she co-wrote for the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters — for which she also provided the singing voice for the character Rumi, one third of the girl group at its center, Huntrix — became a worldwide phenomenon, shooting to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and holding that spot for eight weeks. It marked the first time that a K-pop — or Korean popular music — act not associated with BTS had ever topped the Hot 100, and it made Huntrix the first girl group to top it since Destiny’s Child with “Bootylicious” back in 2001. The film, meanwhile, became the most watched original title in Netflix’s history, accumulating more than 500 million views. For the 34-year-old born Eun-jae Kim, things have only …

KPop Demon Hunters Hit Golden Scores First K-pop Grammy Win

KPop Demon Hunters Hit Golden Scores First K-pop Grammy Win

It’s long overdue, but the Grammy Awards have finally awarded K-pop. “Golden,” the smash hit from KPop Demon Hunters, has scored the genre’s first win in the written for visual media category. In addition to the written for visual media category, “Golden,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for much of this summer, is nominated for song of the year, with co-writer Mark Sonnenblick also earning a nomination for the song, and the pop duo/group performance category. The David Guetta remix of the song was also nominated for best remixed recording. KPop Demon Hunter’s soundtrack itself was nominated for best compilation soundtrack for visual media. The song of the year nomination marks the first time a K-pop group’s song has been nominated in the general field. Blackpink member Rosé also became the first K-pop artist to be nominated in the general field for “APT,” which also got a nomination in song of the year as well as for record of the year. KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s most popular title ever. The project chronicles …
