The 62-year-old revealed in a recent interview that a fan approached her during the height of her Friends fame, thinking she was Dionne Warwick – the Grammy Award-winning “Walk On By” singer who is now 85. Federal prosecutors have indicted ex-Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier on additional charges in connection with a sports gambling sting, alleging he took a hefty bribe to exit a game early in March 2023. Rozier, 32, was charged Thursday in a superseding indictment in Brooklyn federal court with bribery in sporting contests and honest services wire fraud conspiracy. Superseding indictments are used when prosecutors want to change or add new charges to an existing criminal case. Rozier has denied participating in the gambling scheme, and has been fighting to have the case dismissed after pleading not guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy charges in December. His attorneys argue in part that the government’s theory of the case — that he prevented sportsbooks from making informed decisions about accepting certain bets — runs afoul of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the federal wire fraud statute. The new indictment “just confirms that our motion to dismiss was righteous — new charges, new theories, but all just an effort to make something stick,” …
Spencer Pratt’s campaign for Los Angeles mayor began as a celebrity long shot. Days before Tuesday’s primary, the former MTV reality star is threatening to force incumbent Mayor Karen Bass into a November runoff. Pratt, best known for “The Hills,” is polling at 22% among likely voters in a new UC Berkeley-Los Angeles Times poll, just behind Bass at 26% and City Councilmember Nithya Raman at 25%. Pratt and Raman each gained eight percentage points since March, according to the poll. Los Angeles mayoral elections are nonpartisan. If no candidate wins more than 50% in Tuesday’s primary, the top two finishers advance to a November runoff. In a crowded field, that means Pratt does not need to win outright to upend the race — he only needs to finish ahead of Raman. Although the race is nonpartisan, Pratt is a registered Republican and has drawn attention from conservative media and Trump-aligned figures. He has rejected the “MAGA Republican” label and framed his campaign as a referendum on City Hall competence after the Pacific Palisades fire …
As partnerships go, Robert De Niro has been pretty lucky. For starters, there’s his legendary 50-year run with Martin Scorsese, a collaboration that began in the ‘70s with classics like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver and has continued on all the way to 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Then there are co-stars like Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel—both Scorsese company men who’ve shared the screen with him several times—and of course, Al Pacino, arguably De Niro’s only true peer, who burned through the screen with De Niro in Michael Mann’s Heat and Scorsese’s The Irishman. But sometimes lost in all that testosterone is one of De Niro’s longest-running collaborations—his 37-year partnership with the powerhouse producer Jane Rosenthal, who he founded Tribeca Productions with in 1989. With Rosenthal, De Niro entered a fruitful, often financially lucrative next chapter in his career in the ‘90s, starring in films like Wag the Dog, Analyze This, and the Meet the Parents movies. (Focker-in-Law, the hotly-anticipated fourth installment of the Meet the Parents franchise, co-starring Ben Stiller and Ariana …
Fertitta Entertainment plans to buy Caesars Entertainment in an all-cash agreement valued at roughly $17.6 billion, including the assumption of nearly $11.9 billion in debt, the companies said Thursday (May 28). Under the proposed deal, Caesars shareholders would receive $31 in cash for every outstanding share they own. Company executives said that price represents a sizable premium compared with Caesars’ unaffected share price and 30-day average trading levels recorded in late February. Directors said the immediate cash value offered to investors made the proposal attractive as the company continues navigating uneven gaming demand and intense online betting competition. If completed, the merger would combine Caesars’ casino resorts, digital gaming brands and loyalty network with Fertitta Entertainment’s Golden Nugget casinos and Landry’s hospitality operations. The combined portfolio would span 60 casino resorts and gaming properties across the …
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’s Paula (Tatiana Maslany) has a lot of the usual challenges single moms face. Her job is both demanding and underpaid. She doesn’t get as much time with her daughter as she would like, so she volunteers to coach her soccer team. Her ex and his new wife treat Paula like a speed bump on the road to their happy new life together. But Paula also has some problems that may be slightly outside the norm: her regular cam boy has apparently been attacked and kidnapped during one of their sessions, and now Paula’s being threatened with the release of compromising videos of her from their time together if Paula doesn’t pay his five-figure ransom. So yeah—Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, whose fourth episode premieres next week, blends comedy, drama, mystery, and even pulse-pounding youth sports action. Here are five more reasons why it should be on your watchlist. 1. It’s not puritanical about sex work. Courtesy of AppleTV If you’ve watched a cop show since about 1995, you’ve seen the internet portrayed as the …
“It’s been a very weird time recently,” Backrooms director Kane Parsons tells me over Zoom, from his room in Vancouver. “It’s been very strange—good strange, but it’s all very new.” Only four years ago, Parsons was a teenage YouTuber creating videos based on “the backrooms,” a 4chan meme (born from a single photo of a mysterious yellow-walled room) that spawned its own online mythology about a parallel universe of eerily vacant and seemingly-haunted spaces. Now the not-yet-21-year-old animator, composer, and filmmaker has become the youngest person ever to direct an A24 movie. Backrooms, which opens this Friday, is a feature-length reimagining of the meme, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve playing characters who find themselves lost—and possibly not alone— in a liminal world. It’s pure 21st-century internet culture adapted for the screen, doing for Gen-Z perspectives (shaped by COVID and unlimited screen access) what A24’s Spring Breakers did for the Tumblr aesthetic way back when. Advance tracking suggests a box office hit in the making; if Parsons’ film can outperform this past weekend’s box-office champion …
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge dismissed charges against a convicted former Fox television executive Wednesday after a prosecutor said charges brought in a U.S.-led effort to battle corruption in international soccer “doesn’t fit within” the priorities of the Trump administration. Judge Pamela K. Chen accepted the explanation provided by U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. about why the government wanted to dismiss the indictment against Hernan Lopez. A smiling Lopez, the former CEO of Fox International Channels, later left the Brooklyn federal courthouse, telling reporters he was relieved that “a case that never should have started is finally over.” Nocella told Chen that the administration preferred to focus on domestic and foreign terrorist organizations, national security, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking and violent gangs. The judge said Nocella’s stated reason, along with an explanation in a written document submitted to the court, “does provide sufficient justification” to accept the request to dismiss the indictment. Lopez and Full Play Group SA, a South American sports media company, were convicted in 2023 of paying tens of millions …
Whew, buddy, where to start with this one? This project, initially announced in 2023, has cycled through various creative teams, including writers George Nolfi, Damon Lindelof, and Steven Knight, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to direct. After Nolfi boarded the project, there’s been next to no news on this one, and it feels safe to assume it’s DOA. Lindelof did recently confirm that he was fired from the project in 2023 along with his co-writers, telling the House of R podcast that he’d envisioned a film that would have explored the duelling forces of nostalgia and revisionism and “do a Protestant Reformation inside ‘Star Wars’,” but that the movie’s relationship to the broader franchise—including “where it was inside of the canon, what its relationship was to Episode IX”—ultimately made it a tough script to crack. Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Film Searchlight Pictures/Everett Collection Waititi always seems to have about a dozen irons in the fire at any given time, but the Thor writer-director has supposedly been developing a Star Wars project since 2020. Work on that …
