The latest Star Wars movie is a successful failure

The latest Star Wars movie is a successful failure

The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first Star Wars movie to come out since The Rise of Skywalker hit theaters in 2019. In the meantime, the Star Wars franchise has been at a bit of a loss as to what to do with itself, churning out beloved TV series like Andor as well as limited series like The Book of Boba Fett, which most fans will agree is better left forgotten. The Mandalorian and Grogu has to feel big enough to satisfy longtime fans of the movies, targeted enough not to alienate those who are expecting a continuing of the Mandalorian TV show, and good enough to get a franchise that’s lost its way back on track. Does it rise to the challenge? Kind of, sometimes, a bit. The Mandalorian and Grogu may be a decent investment for Disney in the end, but it isn’t likely to be counted among the franchise’s greats. Hopefully it will mark the beginning of better times ahead. The movie itself The Mandalorian and Grogu is not bad, which isn’t …

Russell out of Canadian Grand Prix with engine failure

Russell out of Canadian Grand Prix with engine failure

MONTREAL, May 24 : George Russell retired from the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday with a power unit failure after a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle for the lead with Mercedes teammate and Formula One world championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Italian Antonelli, chasing his fourth win in a row and 18 points clear of Russell after Saturday’s sprint race won by the Briton, took over at the front. Russell had started on pole position in Montreal for the third year in succession with his 19-year-old teammate alongside on the front row. The car slowed and stopped by the side of the track on lap 30 of 68. Russell thumped the car with his hands and threw the headrest out, a gesture noted by race control, before stepping clear as the virtual safety car was deployed. Source link

France ponders failure to protect children as school abuse scandal rocks Paris

French police carried out a wave of arrests over suspicions of child abuse at schools in central Paris on Wednesday, dramatically accelerating the authorities’ response to a scandal that has shaken the French capital and undermined faith in its schools. Officers from the Brigade de protection des mineurs, a child protection unit, detained 16 people with links to a nursery school in the 7th arrondissement (district) of Paris, one of several establishments rocked by allegations of child abuse in the capital’s after-school care system, known as périscolaire. The suspects were held on an array of charges including “rape of minors”, “sexual assault of minors” and “violence against minors”, according to the public prosecutor’s office. Several had already been suspended from their jobs following multiple reports of abuse and the airing of a documentary that contained scenes of violence filmed using a hidden camera. Failure, Forgiveness, and Emotional Inheritance in Fatherhood

Failure, Forgiveness, and Emotional Inheritance in Fatherhood

I have been a father for 40 years, a grandfather for 16 years, and a family psychologist in clinical practice for more than four decades. Throughout these years, I have carefully investigated fatherhood, and conscientiously invested in it, from both a personal and professional vantage point. For thousands of clinical hours, and countless personal, family hours, I have experienced fatherhood unfolding across lifetimes and generations. I have treated birth fathers, step-fathers, adoptive fathers, single fathers, widowed fathers, adolescent fathers, fathers of children with special needs and chronic mental or physical illnesses, fathers of LGBTQ+ children, gay and bisexual fathers, trans fathers, non-resident fathers (as a result of work travel, military deployment, or incarceration), stay-at-home fathers, ill and dying fathers, fathers who tragically lost their children to death by disease or suicide, fathers raising children as a result of artificial reproductive technologies—and of course grandfathers and even great-grandfathers. Since beginning my practice in 1983, becoming a father in 1987, and becoming a grandfather in 2010, I have seen times change, as they always do, and I …

A Teacher Is Quitting The Job Because Schools Don’t Let Kids Fail Anymore

A Teacher Is Quitting The Job Because Schools Don’t Let Kids Fail Anymore

In recent years, teachers have been expected to do more with less and less: fewer resources, less support, even less authority. However, for one teacher, her breaking point was solely about grading. After schools have all but abandoned consequences for skipping class and failing grades, she says that her personal values no longer align with the goals of the education system, and the only choice for her is to stop teaching. Kids are no longer accountable for their performance or their behavior. Students don’t need to apply themselves to pass, and that means teachers aren’t really teaching anymore. A teacher is quitting her job because schools are no longer allowing kids to fail. Torie Fowler, a high school English teacher living in Florida, posted a video explaining exactly why she’s choosing to leave teaching, and it’s because of a newer education concept called “course recovery.” These are programs where students who are struggling in their classes can make up credit through online coursework that is condensed to a few weeks. She specifically mentions one senior …

Politics Home | Nigel Farage Faces Formal Investigation Into Failure To Declare £5m Gift

Nigel Farage faces an investigation into whether he breached parliamentary rules (Alamy) 2 min read41 min Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is facing a formal inquiry over whether he breached parliamentary rules by failing to declare a £5m gift. The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner will begin an inquiry into whether Farage has breached the House of Commons Code of Conduct over accepting a £5m gift from the crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. As revealed by The Guardian, Farage received the gift in the weeks leading up to his announcement that he would stand as a parliamentary candidate in the 2024 general election. Farage has said he believed he had not needed to disclose the gift, as it was intended to cover his own personal security costs. If the investigation concludes that there was a particularly serious breach of parliamentary declaration rules, Farage could be suspended from the Commons. If an MP is suspended for 10 days or more, it can trigger a recall petition and force a by-election.  Asked about the gift on the …

The relentless churn of the 24-hour news cycle and the often-polarising nature of social media can exacerbate these feelings, making it difficult to disengage. Recognising this growing concern, Dr Chetna Kang, a consultant psychiatrist at Central Health London, has offered insights into what constitutes political anxiety. She has outlined six key indicators to watch for and provided practical advice on how to effectively manage and overcome these challenging emotions. What is political anxiety? “Anxiety lies on a spectrum from general day-to-day worry which everybody experiences, right through to degrees of anxiety which lead to panic disorder or symptoms of PTSD,” says Kang. “It’s essentially concern and worry on the …

Zack Polanski Admits Possible Houseboat Council Tax Failure

Zack Polanski Admits Possible Houseboat Council Tax Failure

Zack Polanski has admitted that he may have failed to pay the correct council tax while living on a houseboat in London. The Green Party leader has apologised and “immediately taken steps to pay any council tax he may be found to owe”. A spokesman for the party had previously claimed that Polanski rented a room at another address where council tax was included in the rent and only stayed on the boat “occasionally”. Government guidance states that a person may be liable for council tax on a boat if it is their “sole or main” residence. On Monday night, a Green Party spokesperson said: “Until relatively recently, Zack was living on a houseboat, which came with its own unique practical circumstances and considerations. “He has immediately taken steps to pay any council tax he may be found to owe. Zack apologises sincerely for the unintentional mistake.” The spokesperson added: “For security reasons, we do not comment publicly on Zack’s address. “There have recently been two serious incidents which have been reported to the police …

Tesla Recalls Some Cybertrucks for Wheel Issue and More Than 200,000 Other Cars for Camera Failure

Tesla Recalls Some Cybertrucks for Wheel Issue and More Than 200,000 Other Cars for Camera Failure

Tesla is recalling 173 Cybertrucks because cracking in the rotor could cause the wheel stud to separate from the wheel hub, increasing the risk of a crash and injury. The recall includes model year 2024-2026 Cybertrucks with 18-inch steel wheels. In its report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that rough roads and cornering may strain the stud hole in the wheel rotor causing cracks to form and with continued driving the wheel stud could eventually separate from the wheel hub. Wheel stud separation may affect vehicle controllability, increasing the risk of a collision. On affected vehicles, Tesla will replace the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts with more durable ones at no cost to vehicle owners. The manufacturer’s recall number is SB-26-33-003. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla is also recalling more than 200,000 Model Y, Model S Model X and Model 3 electric vehicles because of a software issue that renders the rearview camera inoperable for a short period of time. Loss of the rearview camera …

OpenAI Hit With Barrage of Lawsuits Over Failure to Report School Shooter Before Massacre

OpenAI Hit With Barrage of Lawsuits Over Failure to Report School Shooter Before Massacre

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Seven families — the first wave of dozens, lawyers say — are suing OpenAI, alleging that the company failed to provide Canadian authorities with information that could’ve prevented a horrific school shooting in the rural mining town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, despite having advance knowledge of the shooter’s disturbing conversations with the chatbot. The lawsuits also claim that OpenAI has misled the public about the steps it says it took stop the shooter from using ChatGPT to discuss mass violence. In early February, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and younger stepbrother before traveling to Tumbler Ridge’s secondary school, where she opened fire on students and teachers using a modified rifle. Five students, all aged between 12 and 13, and a teacher were murdered. Twenty-seven more people were wounded, some severely. Several parents were forced to identify their children by their clothing because the damage wrought on the kids’ young bodies was so extreme. The shooter died by suicide. …
