Will Gillian Anderson’s Cannes Film Festival Acclaim Finally Spell Oscar Recognition?

Will Gillian Anderson’s Cannes Film Festival Acclaim Finally Spell Oscar Recognition?

Schoenbrun also has the added bonus this time of having two prestigious and well-known leading actors, with two great muses of the small screen from different generations: Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder, the latter currently approaching the end of the HBO series Hacks. Einbinder plays the young and enthusiastic filmmaker. Anderson, whom Schoenbrun got to know as teenager surfing X-Files online forums, as she told A Rabbit’s Foot, plays the aging actor, a sort of postmodern Norma Desmond, eccentric with a very strong Southern accent. Laurent Hou/Getty Images It is certainly a brave role for a 57-year-old actor who made her film debut back in 1992. (The Turning was released a year before the series that made her famous.) Perhaps, though, it is a role like this that is required to garner the recognition that Anderson has been denied so far on the big screen, especially in terms of awards. It’s been a while since the big TV awards have been given to Anderson—she has a couple of Emmys and Golden Globes for giving life …

Isabella Rossellini to Receive Locarno Film Festival Excellence Award

Isabella Rossellini to Receive Locarno Film Festival Excellence Award

The Locarno Film Festival will celebrate Italian-American actress, model, filmmaker and icon Isabella Rossellini with its Excellence Award at its 79th edition this summer. Rossellini will be honored on the opening night of the festival, Wednesday Aug. 5 in the picturesque Swiss town’s Piazza Grande. “An icon of contemporary cinema, television, and fashion whose name is virtually synonymous with artistic daring and technical excellence, Rossellini has long fused the technical brilliance of Hollywood with the European spirit of artistic fearlessness across an extraordinary, multi-faceted, decades-long career,” Locarno organizers highlighted. “After first making a major cultural impact as a model, Rossellini seared herself into the collective imagination as the haunting Dorothy Vallens in David Lynch’s masterpiece Blue Velvet (1986), a role that blended glamour, raw vulnerability, and unforgettable intensity.” Added the festival: “Born of cinema royalty, Rossellini has left her distinct mark on film history, forging a career featuring collaborations with filmmakers like Robert Zemeckis, David O. Russell, Taylor Hackford, Marjane Satrapi, Guy Maddin, the Taviani brothers, or of course, most memorably of all, David Lynch, …

Gillian Anderson unveils new 80s inspired look as she steps out with a mane of tumbling curls at Cannes Film Festival

Gillian Anderson has always had a knack for surprising her fans, and her latest appearance at the Cannes Film Festival may be one of her most striking transformations yet. The 57-year-old actress stepped out at the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival on May 13 for the Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma photocall, unveiling a bold new 80s inspired look that instantly set social media alight.  Known for her sleek, polished style, Gillian swapped her signature straight locks for a voluminous cascade of blonde curls, and the result was nothing short of show-stopping. © Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images Gillian Anderson unveils wild curls Leaning playfully over a balcony as photographers clamoured below, the actress radiated confidence and joy, her tumbling curls catching the light and framing her face in soft, dramatic waves. In another moment, she glanced over her shoulder with effortless poise, offering a glimpse of the intricate detailing on her gown — and, of course, that headline-making hair. For the occasion, Gillian wore a sleeveless ivory Miu Miu dress adorned with delicate floral …

The opening day saw a blend of celebratory tributes, powerful political statements, and unexpected appearances, setting a dynamic tone for the festival. Among the first honours bestowed was an honorary Palme d’Or to acclaimed filmmaker Peter Jackson. Introduced by Elijah Wood, who famously played Frodo Baggins in Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, the New Zealand director expressed his surprise. “I’ve never figured out why I’m getting a Palme d’Or. I’m not a Palme d’Or sorta guy,” he quipped. The tribute concluded with a rendition of The Beatles’ “Get Back,” a nod to Jackson’s lauded 2021 documentary, as the director was seen mouthing the lyrics from the stage. …

From mountain photography to ice-climbing – try it all at this summer festival in the French Alps | Alps holidays

From mountain photography to ice-climbing – try it all at this summer festival in the French Alps | Alps holidays

After a day spent hiking across the Col d’Entrèves glacier, a sugar hit is required. I descend on the cable car and join the queue at the ice-cream counter. Above me, surrounded by jagged peaks, looms the huge white figure of Mont Blanc, serene and pure against a brilliant blue sky. Although it’s late afternoon, people are still heading up the mountain, and there are two clear groups. On one side are the tourists, who are about to be lifted into unfamiliar frozen realms at 3,375 metres (11,072ft), hoping to grab a picture and return. Mixed among them are the weathered faces of mountain experts: hikers confidently heading for a high-altitude hut, or climbers with coils of rope. How many of those tourists, I wonder, are wishing they could be mountaineers, secretly regretting the twists of fate that kept them away from that path? But all is not lost. The aspiring adventurer, no matter what age or background, can begin the journey to competence in the mountains. The annual mountain festival I am attending aims …

The 41 Most Memorable Looks in Cannes Film Festival History

The 41 Most Memorable Looks in Cannes Film Festival History

In 2018, Kristen Stewart was a member of the Cannes Film Festival jury. She also—gasp!—took off her heels, contesting a historic ban on flat shoes at the famed red carpet. This is one of many unforgettable moments at the Cannes Film Festival, where Sharon Stone served as muse to the mononymous designer Valentino at the premiere of a documentary on his life. Cannes is also where Yseult, the French singer, broke through when she wore a custom recreation of the famed Dior New Look from 1947, tailored entirely to her proportions. It’s also where, last year, Alexander Skarsgård wore those Saint Laurent thigh high boots on the red carpet, you know the ones. Despite being known for its strict red carpet dress code, Cannes is also where many stars bare the most skin. There’s Cameron Diaz in 2002, wearing a sheer dress that if at the time was scandalous today is, merely, standard. That may be because in 2021, Bella Hadid broke the internet when she took the red carpet in a Schiaparelli couture fabrication …

See All the Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet 2026 Fashion, Outfits, & Looks

As the Cannes Film Festival 2026 begins on Tuesday, May 12, and runs through Saturday, May 23, actors, directors, producers, and more descend on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet in support of the 21 films competing for the coveted Palme d’Or, the annual international festival’s highest honor. With the Croisette, the region’s picturesque stretch of beautiful beaches dotted with luxury hotels and high-end shopping, serving as a backdrop, the Cannes Film Festival fashion is unique in that it’s to be admired on and off the red carpet. It’s here at the Cannes Film Festival that stars have plenty of opportunities to showcase their style. Sure, you can expect starry, world-premiere screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, but there are also press conferences, photo-calls, parties, and galas galore where attendees can make a fashion statement in something as simple as jeans and a T-shirt. Last year, Elle Fanning did just that when she appeared at a photo-call for Sentimental Value, Joachim Trier’s tragicomedy (which went on to win best international feature film at the Oscars …
