Rejuvenated Verstappen happy with Monaco front row

Rejuvenated Verstappen happy with Monaco front row

MONACO, June 6 : Max Verstappen has spent much of the season grumbling about Formula One’s hybrid engine and even threatening to quit the sport, but the smile was back on the Dutchman’s face as he put his Red Bull on the front row of the Monaco grid on Saturday. The four-time world champion has managed only one podium in the opening five races of the season, but a sensational qualifying performance means he will start alongside pole setter Kimi Antonelli. Verstappen held provisional pole before Italian teenager Antonelli grabbed it off him by 0.043 seconds with his final flying lap. Against all expectations he has now given himself a shot at a third Monaco triumph. “If you would’ve told me yesterday I would be on the front row, I definitely would’ve taken it,” he told reporters. Verstappen was a distant fifth fastest in Saturday’s final practice, almost a second down on Antonelli, then things clicked in qualifying. He was second in Q1 and fastest in Q2 before a thrilling battle for pole in Q3. …

Adult Children on the Front Lines of Caregiving for Parents

Adult Children on the Front Lines of Caregiving for Parents

If you’re caregiving for an aging parent, you aren’t alone. Nearly one in eight adults in the U.S. is caring for an aging parent. Family caregiving is increasingly recognized as a normal (if stressful) phase of the parent/child lifecycle. You might sit on hold with the insurance company, wash the accumulation of dishes in the sink, check your mom’s blood pressure, help her to the car, drive her to a doctor’s appointment, and pick up the groceries she needs. And that’s only if she doesn’t need help with dressing, feeding, and getting to the toilet, all before or after a long day at work and helping adolescent or young adult children. Quick pause. Let’s not fall into stereotypes: Older adults are not a needy bunch in general. Support tends to flow downstream from parent to child throughout much of life. By the end of life, however, many parents find their abilities waning and their need for help increasing. Dementia presents obvious needs for care, but mobility issues, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions also …

Ukraine strikes Russian oil pumping station 800 miles behind front lines

Ukraine strikes Russian oil pumping station 800 miles behind front lines

Credit: X/Volodymyr Zelenskyy Ukrainian drones struck a Russian fuel depot, oil pumping station and a refinery in an escalating campaign of strikes against energy infrastructure often hundreds of miles inside Russia. Kyiv said on Sunday it had struck the Lazarevo pumping station in the Kirov region, north-east of Moscow and about 800 miles from Ukrainian-held territory. Alexander Sokolov, the regional governor, admitted that drones had hit a “facility” and caused a fire. He claimed there had been no casualties as he called for calm. The station pumps oil from Siberia to Belarus. Ukraine’s ‌General Staff also said it had hit the Saratov oil refinery on the Volga River, causing a large fire during overnight strikes. “During the night, our soldiers applied Ukraine’s long-range sanctions against an oil refinery in Saratov, Russia. This is about 700km (430 miles) from the front line,” Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, said. Roman Busargin, the Saratov regional governor, said on Telegram that “civil infrastructure” had been damaged in the strike, but gave no more details. In the town of Matveyev-Kurgan …

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Cause a Stir With Knicks/Cavs Front Row Appearance

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Cause a Stir With Knicks/Cavs Front Row Appearance

Early in the game, cameras caught Kelce engaging in a fairly common basketball spectator practice: sipping a beer. But when the player realized he was on camera, he stood up and pounded the beverage, all to chants and cheers from the crowd. Taylor Swift reacted the way many might to such antics, covering her face with her hands in mix of laughter and embarrassment. But just for a moment: After that, the singer lifted her face and, looking at her partner, joined the audience in fervent applause. Alas, Kelce’s work to engage the crowd had little effect on the Cavaliers, a team that has struggled and failed to best the Knicks throughout the series. Game 3 was no exception, and as hopes of a win slipped away, Kelce shielded his face with his cap and shut his eyes, presumably trying to dream his way out of the situation. Swift watched him with amused concern, until he roused himself and the pair exchanged a kiss. The Cavaliers might have lost 121 to 108 on Saturday, but …

This Robot Trying to Dance Like Michael Jackson But Wiping Out Pathetically in Front of a Crowd Perfectly Illustrates the Industry’s Deep-Seated Problem

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech An amazing video has been making the rounds today. It shows a humanoid robot strides out in front of a crowd, busting moves to Michael Jackson’s 1983 smash hit “Billie Jean.” It starts out impressive enough, with the bot pulling off some deft footwork — but trouble starts when it boogies straight into a large step on the stage, sending it stumbling with jerky, inhuman movements. It almost seems as though the bot is going to recover as it regains its footing and segues into a passable moonwalk, one of Jackson’s most iconic moves. But then it strides back into that dastardly step again, this time wiping out so badly that it crumbles into a lifeless heap as a human technician emerges to drag its inert body off stage. This is the greatest video I’ve ever seen. No notes. The lifeless clanker carcass just laying there. No crowd reaction, anything. Just Billie Jean. Until its lifeless shell is …

Delivering Mail on Ukraine’s Front Line

Delivering Mail on Ukraine’s Front Line

Larysa Navrotska is part of a quiet, but brave army of postal workers connecting remote Ukrainian communities close to the battlefield with the outside world. Working for the national postal service in eastern Ukraine often means entering dangerous frontline areas where drones dominate and cause the vast majority of this war’s casualties. Theirs is a dangerous job. In four years of war, Russian attacks have damaged or completely destroyed more than 500 Ukrainian post offices. Ukrposhta says delivery trucks like Larysa’s are also targeted because they carry things such as drone parts to frontline troops. The Russian Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At least nine postal workers have been killed on the job. Larysa and her driver, Vitalii, typically serve roughly 6,500 people each month. Today, they are visiting three villages. Their most loyal customers are retirees awaiting their monthly check. Larysa delivers more than just mail. She brings income and also groceries, medicines, the news and a familiar face to chat with for those living in isolation. …
