So Long, ‘Ferrynoia.’ Green Maritime Technology Is Here

So Long, ‘Ferrynoia.’ Green Maritime Technology Is Here

The Harbor Charger, New York state’s first hybrid-electric public ferry, is gearing up for its first full summer transporting passengers between the city’s South Ferry terminal and Governors Island, the 172-acre oasis across New York Harbor from Lower Manhattan. A draw for New Yorkers and tourists alike, Governors Island hosts outdoor concerts and art installations on its sprawling green spaces. “A lot of what we do on the island is focused on public recreation, exploring the outdoors and public art,” says Clare Newman, president and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island. “The Harbor Charger reflects all three of those pillars, with the idea being that the boat ride itself is part of your Governors Island experience.” The $33 million ferry was designed by Seattle-based Elliott Bay Design Group and built at the Conrad Shipyard in Morgan City, Louisiana. It’s 66 percent faster than the outgoing ferry—the nearly 70-year-old Lt. Samuel S. Coursen that consumed roughly 420 gallons of fuel daily—and can make the one-way trip in 10 minutes. It’s expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions …

The White House Is the New Green Zone

The White House Is the New Green Zone

Across from the White House sits a museum called The People’s House: A White House Experience. Inside is a replica of the Oval Office, and interactive exhibits on what it’s like to attend a State Dinner or sit in on a Cabinet meeting. It’s about as close to the White House as you can get without actually being there, a wholesome reminder of how democracy is supposed to work. But early last Saturday evening, two bullets shattered the glass between displays of Christmas ornaments and dining plates. A 21-year-old gunman had opened fire on Secret Service agents who then returned fire, killing him. It was the latest reminder of how our democracy is actually working, how omnipresent political violence can feel, how inaccessible public buildings are becoming to the public. Three times in four weeks, gunfire has broken out as federal agents were protecting the president and vice president in the vicinity of the White House. Three months ago, a man was shot and killed after entering the Mar-a-Lago security perimeter with a shotgun and …

‘This is fine’ artist KC Green reaches agreement with AI startup Artisan

‘This is fine’ artist KC Green reaches agreement with AI startup Artisan

After criticizing a startup called Artisan for misusing his work, artist KC Green — creator of the famous “This is fine” meme — said he’s reached an agreement with Artisan.  The dispute arose after the startup appeared to use a version of Green’s art to promote its AI assistant Ava. In Artisan’s bus and subway ads, Green’s recognizable dog sat amid recognizable flames, but instead of saying “This is fine,” it declared, “My pipeline is on fire,” while the ad urged people to “Hire Ava the AI BDR.” Earlier this month, Green posted on social media that his art had been “stolen like AI steals” and urged his followers to “vandalize” the ads if they saw them. He also told TechCrunch he was frustrated about having to “try my hand at the American court system” instead of putting that time into his comics. Artisan, meanwhile, told us it has “a lot of respect for Green and his work.” Then, earlier this week, founder and CEO Jaspar Carmichael-Jack said the two sides had come to an …

Memories of Green

Memories of Green

I was as vapour in the blue airs of summer and knew no bounds. — Simone de Beauvoir Come outside, he told us, as we looked up from our play.   We set down all our G.I. Joes and the assorted dolls to see the fruits of labor that he’d planted back in May.   Children listen dutifully when Granddaddy calls. We passed the porch and fence where wild honeysuckles grew   and never got too close, as you’d be worse with just a lick, to grandma’s elephant ears, pillows for drops of morning dew—   we heard that just a few could cure a cold when you were sick. I saw lambent light within his eye. We stepped upon the grass:   Just past the pack of chickweed that my sister said were greens, (it’s funny how those memories are gilded in their cast),   Granddaddy saw his life and told us what it really means. His hands held the cucumbers: There were two that he would pick. We leaned in close to get a look: so long and green …

Green Retreat: California Eases Carbon-Market Costs For Oil Refiners

Green Retreat: California Eases Carbon-Market Costs For Oil Refiners

California’s green-energy regime has hollowed out the state’s refining and oil industry, leaving motorists paying the highest gasoline prices in the country. AAA data show the state gasoline average now north of $6 per gallon, compared with a national average of roughly $4.36 as of Saturday morning. The result of political blowback in California over unaffordable gasoline and diesel prices at the pump is a retreat from left-wing climate policies that could offer relief to motorists, Bloomberg News reports. On Friday, the California Air Resources Board voted to create up to $4 billion in free carbon allowances for oil refiners and other industrial polluters. This will help them more easily comply with the state’s greenhouse gas limits under the Cap-and-Invest program. Earlier this year, CARB proposed further tightening emission limits by removing 118 million allowances from the market to keep the state on track to meet its 2030 climate targets. For refiners, that would mean further reducing emissions or paying more for allowances, with mounting costs already pushing them out of the state.  The move …

Why your clothing rental habit is not as green as you think

Why your clothing rental habit is not as green as you think

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more For weddings, vacations, and other significant events, a growing number of consumers are turning to clothing rental services instead of purchasing new attire. These subscription-based platforms, frequently marketed as a sustainable alternative to fast fashion, deliver a diverse range of items – from daily wear and work outfits to dresses, handbags, and formalwear – directly to customers, who then return them for others to use. “I haven’t bought anything for a big occasion since 2019,” stated Sasha Eck, a user of these services. She finds renting formalwear more sensible than spending a month’s rent on a dress worn only once, appreciating the continuous and affordable access to newer, trendier clothes. A recent ThredUp survey supports this trend, revealing that 87% of wedding guests had …

The Green Planet – TheHumanist.com

The Green Planet – TheHumanist.com

It was a planet whose inhabitants’ desperate distress signals, from within our galaxy, did not seem to be worth the bother of responding to, given that the beings who were sending them were, quite clearly, already too far gone to be saved by the time we could get there, and their planet, which they had turned into an orbiting, rotating abattoir, inundated with organic and inorganic sewage, was also well past the point of salvageability. Those inhabitants, in explaining the reasons for their distress signals and their desire to escape from the agonies they had brought upon themselves, were extremely forthcoming about the nature of their self-inflicted woes. It is instructive to review what those woes were, so that we may avoid repeating their mistakes on our own planet. As communicated to us by the inhabitants who asked us to send spaceships with which to evacuate them from the horrors they were experiencing, they were bipedal apes, and they had named their planet “Earth.” They had overpopulated their planet; eliminated almost all of its oxygen-producing …

Should I get air conditioning in the UK – and can it be green? | Energy efficiency

Should I get air conditioning in the UK – and can it be green? | Energy efficiency

When a heatwave struck the UK this week, Jon Connorton, a software developer, began monitoring temperatures inside his east Hampshire terrace house. With some rooms reaching close to 40C, it was time to deploy the air conditioner. “We just wheel it out in emergencies,” he said. “We were having trouble sleeping.” Connorton and his wife have a portable air conditioner. These plug-in devices cool interior air by removing heat from it and blowing that heat outside, typically via a large hose slung from a window or door. Connorton only runs the unit occasionally, and when the solar panels on his roof can cover its power needs. But he still questions his use of the technology. “You feel it’s a luxury and that you’re being bad for the environment,” he said. Do I need air conditioning in the UK? Most British homes are not built for extreme heat. Photograph: demaerre/Getty British homeowners are rapidly acquiring air conditioners as the climate crisis superheats our summers. An estimated 4m homes have an air conditioner, double the figure from …

Diana Henry’s chicken, avocado and radish salad with green goddess dressing recipe

Diana Henry’s chicken, avocado and radish salad with green goddess dressing recipe

The late American chef Barbara Tropp described the texture of perfectly poached chicken breasts as ‘plush’. It should be tender and soft, not overcooked but, just as importantly, not undercooked with a bloated ‘wet’ texture. If you cook the chicken in advance, keep it in the stock in which it has been poached until you want to serve it. The herby mayonnaise shouldn’t be made too far in advance or it will be less green and fresh.  Requires 30 minutes soaking time.    Source link
