China hands 2 former defense ministers suspended death sentences

A Chinese military court has handed two former defense ministers suspended death sentences following their convictions on graft charges. Wei Fenghe, who served as defense minister from 2018 to 2023, and his successor Li Shangfu, who held the post for several months in 2023, were convicted on Thursday of accepting bribes. Li was also found guilty of offering bribes. Both were given a suspended death sentence with a two-year reprieve and no parole, which is often automatically commuted to life imprisonment after that period. According to China’s Xinhua state news agency, both men were stripped of their political rights for life and will have all personal assets confiscated. Li, once seen as being close to Chinese President Xi Jinping, disappeared from public view the very same year he was appointed minister, alongside several other high-ranking defense officials. Since Xi’s reign began in 2012, the president’s purges have removed millions of officials. Some of the high-ranking convicted officials have reportedly died in custody. Source link

My rookie era: ‘Why don’t I cut my own fringe? I have hands. I have a mirror. What’s stopping me?’ | Australian lifestyle

I have had a fringe since I was 15 years old. I will never forget this life-altering haircut. For years before it I had been suffering lingering effects from a bob cut I received unwillingly in primary school. You were not a cool person if you had a bob as an adolescent in the early 2000s. But finally my hair had grown sufficiently for styling and I got it cut to sit neatly on my shoulders with front bangs. Suddenly, boys were asking me on dates. My social status levelled up. I had transformed my identity overnight, going from Lord Farquaad in Shrek to Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. Flash forward to my 30s and the fringe remains my safety blanket. It is my identity. My friend and sometimes my foe. It is my friend when it is fresh and fabulous after a haircut, sitting perfectly on my eyebrows. Then, inevitably, I let it grow out so long it becomes more of a side part that sits on my eyes or flows behind me in …

HMRC issues warning after law change hands UK households £1,500

HMRC said: “National Minimum Wage has increased. No need to wait for payday surprises. Check your pay before it lands in your bank with the HMRC app. Download it today.” The Government has announced the 2026 increases to the National Minimum Wage, including the National Living Wage. National Living Wage (NLW) for over 21 year olds will increase by 50p an hour to £12.71, a 4.1% uplift. Nobel laureate Mohammadi’s life in Iran’s hands, Nobel committee chief says

APPEAL TO IRANIAN AUTHORITIES Iranian authorities must release Mohammadi to her dedicated medical team so she can urgently receive treatment as her life is at risk, said Joergen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the Nobel Peace Prize. She “is imprisoned solely for her peaceful human rights work. Her life is now in the hands of the Iranian authorities,” he told Reuters on Saturday. Mohammadi was sentenced to a new prison term of seven-and-a-half years, the foundation said in February, weeks before the US and Israel launched their war against Iran. The Nobel committee at the time called on Tehran to free her immediately. She was arrested in December after denouncing the death of a lawyer, Khosrow Alikordi; prosecutor Hasan Hematifar told reporters then she had made provocative remarks at Alikordi’s memorial ceremony. On Friday morning, Mohammadi fainted after days of dangerously high blood pressure and severe nausea, the foundation said. After multiple bouts of vomiting, she blacked out and was moved to the prison medical unit for emergency intravenous fluids. …

The Onion’s Ben Collins Is Still Trying to Get His Hands on Infowars

The Onion’s Ben Collins Is Still Trying to Get His Hands on Infowars

Nevertheless, Collins and The Onion continued their fight. Most recently, they attempted to enter a leasing situation with the far-right media company, where, for $81,000 a month, they would license the infowars.com domain and brand name, as well as any associated intellectual property. After six months, they would have the option to renew the deal. But unfortunately for The Onion, the Texas court system has once again prevented that plan from coming to fruition. If and when they do finally get their hands on Infowars, The Onion won’t waste any time revamping it. “We intend on flipping it over right away,” said Collins. “We got a bunch of bullshit ready to go. It’s really stupid. Everything that we have planned is very, very dumb. So I hope people get excited for that.” Days before the ruling, Collins’s excitement was palpable. “Frankly, the newspaper is doing so well that we need to give them more space to show that off,” he said. “Not every media merger and acquisition has to be the worst news you’ve ever …

Acer Swift 16 AI (2026) Review: Where Do Your Hands Go?

Acer Swift 16 AI (2026) Review: Where Do Your Hands Go?

The two USB-C ports are on the left side, alongside HDMI and a USB-A port. The second USB-A port, a microSD card slot, and a headphone jack are on the right. It’s not a nice assortment of ports overall, and I just wish Acer had split the USB-C ports up so the laptop could have a charging port on either side. Acer is using a top-notch 16-inch OLED touchscreen display on the Swift 16 AI. It has a resolution of 2880 x 1800, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and color saturation as close to perfect as I’ve seen. Like most OLED laptops, it has a glossy, highly reflective display that maxes out at 315 nits of brightness, according to my testing. It’s nowhere near as bright as IPS or mini-LED displays, but the trade-off in brightness is to achieve that unbeatable contrast that only OLED can deliver. A Risky Touchpad Photograph: Luke Larsen The full-size keyboard and oversized touchpad are definitely the most notable elements of this laptop. The first thing you notice is …

A truce appears in the ‘Hands Off Our Yards’ wildfire landscaping wars

A truce appears in the ‘Hands Off Our Yards’ wildfire landscaping wars

Sacramento officials came to Southern California this week for the first public meeting since they issued new proposed rules on how people in fire-prone neighborhoods will be allowed to landscape their yards. In contrast to prior proposals from the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, many who attended were … OK with this one. “It is a reasonable compromise,” Beth Burnam, who holds leadership positions in multiple local environmental and fire safety organizations, told the board. “Do I like everything? No. Can I live with it? Yes.” Under the proposal, residents would not be allowed to plant anything within a 1-foot “Safety Zone” around the home, including beneath roof overhangs; two feet from windows, vents and doors and five feet from decks. Elsewhere within a 5-foot buffer around the home, known as “Zone Zero,” grass and dispersed plants up to 18 inches tall would be permissible. Trees would also be allowed, but would need to be trimmed away from walls and roofs, and residents could install only noncombustible fencing against the house. Any sheds …

With the popularity of e-readers, we expected to see a ton of devices on the floor, but there was a surprising lack thereof, and the enthusiasm focused on physical books. But we looked at what BookCon attendees had on hand, too, including the tech they used to capture the event and the essentials for navigating the chaos of BookCon. In the Hands of the Master Potter – OpentheWord.org

Credit: pexels, pixabay.com By Jill Austin Potter …the Lord says to you. “There’s a price. Do you want My presence and My miracles? Do you want Me? There’s a price behind the anointing. You must be willing to take up your cross and follow Me.” Now imagine you’re sitting in church singing the same songs and staring at the same walls when suddenly the room fills with the fragrance of Jesus. You turn to see some awesomely beautiful vessels of God enter the congregation. Their transparent glaze wondrously reflects the image of Jesus, and you immediately know they’ve been in the higher fires. They’ve paid an incredible price for the powerful anointing they carry. In your spirit you can see Jesus walking up and down the aisles with wedding gowns on His arm. He’s saying, “I’m calling you to be My bride.” “I’m calling you to come into the high fires to let My glory fall upon you, but it will cost you,” He says. “You’ll have to die to your reputation, your theology, and …
