Hawaii vs. Citizens United – The Atlantic

Hawaii vs. Citizens United – The Atlantic

Fifteen years after Mitt Romney stood on an Iowa hay bale and proclaimed that “corporations are people, my friend,” his declaration is no longer mockable. The amount of money corporations spend anonymously to sway federal elections has increased from $359 million in 2012 to $1.4 billion in the most recent presidential cycle. All of that spending by “dark money” nonprofits is protected by the same right to free speech enjoyed by “natural persons,” because the Supreme Court decided in Citizens United v. FEC that U.S. corporations function as citizen associations under the Constitution. But not all of these “people” are created exactly equal. Whereas humans are automatically granted certain rights at birth, corporate personhood comes into existence under state laws that define its powers—a fact that opponents of corporate money in politics hope to use to transform how U.S. elections are funded. Hawaii is the first state to try. Earlier this month, a nearly unanimous and bipartisan majority—well, as bipartisan as it gets in a state with so few Republicans—of Hawaii’s state legislature voted to …

‘Hotter than Hawaii’: London and East Anglia expected to reach 27C on Friday | UK weather

You might expect sunshine in Australia, Tunisia or Argentina, but those staying in the UK are likely to see hotter weather, with some parts of the country expected to reach the high 20s before the bank holiday weekend. Temperatures in London and East Anglia could reach 27C on Friday, the Met Office said, marking the warmest day of the year so far. The scorching heat means parts of the UK could be warmer than Sydney, Buenos Aires or Tunis, where highs of between 24C to 22C are forecast. Temperatures could also exceed those in Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, where highs of 26C are predicted. Friday’s highs in London and the south-east will be about 10C higher than averages for the time of year, which are 15 to 17C, the Met Office said. “We’ve got some very warm, humid air coming up from the south,” the Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge told the Press Association. “That means we will see some very warm weather, particularly in the east and the south-east, because there we’ll see …

New Acting Lt. Gov. Chosen in Hawaii as Luke Takes Leave of Absence

New Acting Lt. Gov. Chosen in Hawaii as Luke Takes Leave of Absence

Sylvia Luke, the embattled lieutenant governor of Hawaiʻi, said Thursday she will take an indefinite leave of absence without pay. “This decision is not made lightly,” she said in a press release. “Serving the people of Hawai‘i has been the honor of my professional life, and I remain deeply committed to the responsibilities entrusted to me.” She added, “I understand that allegations which have been made against me are concerning. I ask for the public’s understanding and to allow this process to move forward appropriately.” The announcement came just hours after Luke met with Gov. Josh Green at the State Capitol. On Wednesday, Luke’s attorney confirmed the Hawaiʻi attorney general’s Special Investigations and Prosecution Division considers Luke a target in an investigation of $35,000 given to an influential state lawmaker in 2022. Thursday’s press release said Luke would not give any interviews. In a written statement, Green said he asked Luke to take leave “until the investigation is resolved, so government can remain focused on serving the people of Hawaii.” Later Thursday, the governor designated …

ASOBISYSTEM Groups, Execs on Global Aspirations, ASOBIEXPO Hawaii 2026

ASOBISYSTEM Groups, Execs on Global Aspirations, ASOBIEXPO Hawaii 2026

A day after J-pop fans gathered at Honolulu’s Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell for a one-night-only concert, Asobi Expo Hawaii 2026, the artists and executives of Asobi System congregated backstage to discuss the event and the company’s global aspirations. As J-pop continues to move further into the U.S. market, Japanese entertainment companies and labels are looking for ways to connect artists with both longtime and potential fans in what was a previously untapped market. Bringing Asobi Expo, an event meant to gather and showcase artists from the Asobi System family, to the U.S. is one way some labels are introducing talent stateside. Other events similar to it, like Japan Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association’s Matsuri event held last year in Los Angeles, are label agnostic. “I thought that was really important to bring [the event] abroad, to really spread the Japanese culture,” Asobi System CEO and founder of Yusuke Nakagawa, tells The Hollywood Reporter. The entertainment company, which he founded in 2007, works to showcase and spread Japan’s famed harajuku culture, which is essentially a …

Palm-Killing Beetle Found on Molokaʻi for First Time, Rediscovered on Maui

Palm-Killing Beetle Found on Molokaʻi for First Time, Rediscovered on Maui

State officials are surveying parts of Maui and Molokaʻi for evidence of coconut rhinoceros beetles, and residents near detection sites are being asked to check palm trees for signs of damage after the highly invasive pest was discovered on both islands. The suspected detection Tuesday of a male beetle near Kaunakakai Harbor would mark the first time one has been found on Molokaʻi. Based on photographs of the specimen, the Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity says it is likely a coconut rhinoceros beetle, and it is being sent to its Plant Pest Control Branch on Oʻahu for official confirmation. Residents on Molokaʻi petitioned the state Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity more than six months ago for better protections from the beetle, which led to the state’s strictest regulations for importing certain products such as mulch. The appearance of a beetle near Kahului Airport on April 1 marks the first official sighting since November 2023 on Maui. The Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity’s Dean Matsukawa said in a statement Wednesday that a single dead adult coconut …

How to Help Those Impacted by the Hawaii Floods

How to Help Those Impacted by the Hawaii Floods

Damages from both storms could exceed $1 billion, according to Hawaii Governor Josh Green, who has asked President Donald Trump for a major disaster declaration to channel federal resources to the recovery effort. “These storms have impacted every county in our state and stretched our emergency response capabilities,” Green said in a statement. “This request is about getting our communities the support they need to recover quickly and safely.” Meanwhile, neighbors and aid groups are rallying to help affected households secure temporary housing, replace food, receive medical care and muck out debris-laden homes. “So many families have been displaced, homes have been damaged, and communities are facing immediate needs,” said Hawaiian Council CEO Kuhio Lewis. “The path to recovery begins now — it cannot wait.” Here are some of the groups accepting financial support to help those impacted. Lahui Foundation is accepting donations for its mutual aid work distributing supplies and financial aid to Oahu’s North Shore families. The group is also organizing volunteers to help residents clean out homes and neighborhoods. North Shore-born musician …

More than 2,000 people remained without power Sunday afternoon after a storm prompted evacuation orders for 5,500 people north of Honolulu — though they were later lifted — and more than 200 people were rescued from the rising waters. “I got my family with me. We got out of the North Shore… our power went off… We’re safe for now, but there’s a lot of people who weren’t, so we’re sending all our love,” Momoa shared in a since-expired Instagram Story on Saturday, per People. “The North Shore is pretty gnarly right now. So hopefully everyone’s safe and getting out… Stay safe out there.” Oahu’s iconic North Shore, famed for its big-wave surfing, was submerged under muddy floodwaters after …

Flood risk continues in Hawaii as North Shore residents return to destroyed homes

Flood risk continues in Hawaii as North Shore residents return to destroyed homes

Cleanup efforts were underway as locals came together to help displaced families returning to destroyed homes. Mac Burton, who lives in Wailua Beach, went out into the streets of the North Shore community Sunday to help his neighbors. Cleanup, he said, is going to take months. “Anything that was, you know, 4 feet or below, it is just completely wiped out,” he said. Mac Burton recorded flooding in his neighborhood in Waialua, on Oahu, on Friday morning.Mac Burton Burton said that many homes still have standing water in them and that even when the water level goes down, they’re left with “a ton of mud.” Wood homes that are still standing will face mold and water damage, he said. “Everyone’s kind of in the street, just shoveling out mud and pulling out soaking debris and doing whatever they can to kind of start drying things out,” he said. “But we’re still without power here, so it’s making some of those efforts a little more difficult.” Burton was awake when the flooding began early Saturday. As …

“Everything is soaked”: Hawaii residents return to flood-ravaged homes

As floodwaters begin to recede on Oahu, residents are returning home to assess the damage and, in many cases, what’s been lost. Officials lifted evacuation orders across parts of the island’s North Shore, including Waialua and Hale’iwa, after fears over the aging Wahiawa Dam eased and water levels dropped. But the return has revealed the storm’s full impact: homes pushed off foundations, streets still partially submerged, and families sifting through mud-soaked belongings in search of anything salvageable. In communities like Laie, the destruction has been especially severe. Local officials estimate roughly 100 homes were damaged overnight as floodwaters surged through neighborhoods, filling garages and living spaces with debris. Residents described water rising to waist level in just hours — overwhelming properties that had never flooded before and leaving behind a thick layer of mud and debris. Rescue efforts during the storm underscored the scale of the crisis. More than 230 people were pulled from dangerous conditions statewide, while crews conducted dramatic rooftop evacuations at the height of the flooding. The United States Coast Guard, working …
