A Jet2 flight declared a mid-air emergency on its approach to a UK airport this afternoon. A Glasgow-bound flight which departed Alicante in Spain shortly after 1.40pm local time on Saturday, June 13, requested a priority landing.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “Our crew followed procedure and requested a priority landing due to a medical emergency.

The Boeing 737-8 was due to arrive at Glasgow Airport at around 3.40pm before the general emergency 7700 squawk procedure was initiated around two and a half hours into the flight.

Data from flight tracking app FlightRadar24 shows the plane traveling north at around 23,000ft over the Irish Sea near Stranraer at the time.

It continued north over Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire towards Glasgow Airport where it landed safely shortly after 3.40pm. The emergency response squawking 7700 can cover a range of scenarios including a technical emergency.

The procedure allows air traffic controllers and ground crews to respond to the emergency in the most effective manner. Jet2 has been contacted for comment.
