A tearful Canadian comedian and Hollywood star Mike Myers on Sunday night paid tribute to his native Canada for opening the way to his classic roles like Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers, Dr. Evil and Shrek. “I just want to say, Canada, I don’t know what to say, dude. The Critics Choice Association started Pride Month festivities early, as the organization hosted its third annual Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television on Friday in Los Angeles. The event recognized a star-studded lineup of LGBTQ+ stars and creatives, with Dan Levy, Hannah Einbinder, Noah Schnapp, Jane Lynch and Heated Rivalry creator Jacob Tierney all receiving honors. Levy, currently on the Emmy campaign trail for his new show Big Mistakes, opened up in his speech about his desire for queer people to be able to make Hollywood projects “without the added weight of responsibility — knowing that what we make needs to work in order to make an impact, in order for more of our stories to be told. Just in time for those cold Canadian summer nights, Heated Rivalry’s iconic Team Canada fleece jacket is finally available to preorder. The limited-edition jacket — inspired by the one worn by Hudson Williams’ character Shane Hollander in the queer hockey romance series — will be available for pre-order on June 3, Heated Rivalry producer Accent Aigu Entertainment and Province of Canada announced Wednesday morning. Fans immediately voiced their desire to own the jacket once the series aired. The final design details will be available on the pre-order date, according to a release. Penelope Douglas’ adult romance novel has been optioned by Canada’s Crave streaming service for a TV series after the breakout success of its Heated Rivalry gay romancer adaptation. Released in 2024, Five Brothers follows one woman who learns the secrets of the five Jaeger brothers: Macon, Army, Iron, Dallas, and Trace. “Five Brothers was such an immersive writing experience for me with a cast of characters I connected to immediately. I can’t wait to see these men brought to life,” Douglas said in a statement. Crave parent Bell Media plans to develop the book as a multi-season TV series after successfully adapting Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry book into a gay hockey TV drama that was also sold to HBO Max in the U.S. market. “Heated Rivalry proved there is global appetite for sexy, sophisticated, and mainstream romance stories. Does the saying “A rising tide lifts all boats” apply to subgenres of small-screen romance? Amazon surely hope so. As a romance involving a star hockey player with daddy issues, its new series Off Campus will be unable to avoid reflexive comparisons to Heated Rivalry — and, given the HBO drama’s lightning-in-a-bottle success, unlikely to live up to them. Off Campus can only pray that said comparisons will attract the attention of an audience newly primed for love stories involving sweaty men with sticks on ice skates, and that its own charms will be enough to get them to stay.
