Podcaster Steven Bartlett recently claimed that drinking a few glasses of wine “ruined” three days of his life. “Is there anything more miserable-looking than Bartlett’s perfectly optimised life?” asks my colleague Rosamund Hall, who explains this week why health optimisation tools are backfiring and making people increasingly unhappy – and even lonely. No amount of alcohol is good for you, granted. But Bartlett’s reaction also got me thinking about a wider problem: has our modern obsession with living optimally – strict bedtimes, stringent diets and endless health-promoting protocols – actually made us more fragile? I grew up rurally, often making bows and …

The Windows security feature most people ignore is the one I check first on every PC

The Windows security feature most people ignore is the one I check first on every PC

Windows’ security features have seen a massive improvement over the years. The default security configuration is usually good enough to protect you from most malware. However, there’s an important setting that many users don’t know about, or if they know, they choose to overlook it because some article on the web convinced them to disable it in the name of performance gains. It doesn’t help that Windows often disables it without notifying you. I’m talking about core isolation, which was introduced in the April 2018 update of Windows 10, and has been a part of Windows 11 since launch. Core isolation does what Windows Defender can’t The antivirus for your antivirus Windows Defender, or any other antivirus program, works at a surface level. It monitors your files and programs, flagging and often blocking any suspicious behavior. Some antivirus apps come with kernel and rootkit protection that offer a deeper level of security. However, they still operate at the level of the kernel itself. The kernel is practically the brain of your OS where all core …

If Mean People Ruin Your Vibe, This Simple Brain Trick Makes Them Easier To Ignore

If Mean People Ruin Your Vibe, This Simple Brain Trick Makes Them Easier To Ignore

“I am so sick of moving you out of apartments. I’ve moved you out of five apartments in four years, and enough is enough!!” “You know Jeremy threw me out, and I have to move today! I thought we were friends, but I guess if you have to go to your niece’s baptism instead of helping me move my few paltry items a few blocks, that tells me how you really feel about me!” “If I gave you a kidney, you’d think I was a bad friend!” “Don’t worry about it, because you wouldn’t give me a kidney if I were on death’s doorstep!” “Ahhhhhhhhhhh!” (sound of me screaming) This is an argument I had with a “friend.” Except for the fact that the friend wasn’t actually present. It was the argument I had in my head waiting in line at the grocery store to buy laxatives, since my annoyance rendered me constipated. Have you ever had feuds with those you love or loathe in your head? Literally spending hours — nay, days and weeks — grappling with this person, and they don’t even know about it? I’m going to say this because I want you to …

Drivers who ignore ‘5 minute’ DVLA alert risk £2.5k fines

Drivers who ignore ‘5 minute’ DVLA alert risk £2.5k fines

Drivers could fall foul of this rule if they’re not careful (Image: Getty) People could risk a hefty fine if they’re caught driving without paying a specific bill. It is a legal requirement for almost all vehicles in the UK to pay some form of road tax. In a post on X, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) said: “Set up your Driver and vehicles account on GOV.UK and you can choose to receive vehicle tax reminders by text or email. Do it today – it only takes 5 minutes.” Drivers can sign up for the free service here, and opt for updates by text or email when the time to renew is approaching. There are also options to be reminded when your MOT and photocard licence expire, ensuring drivers have no excuse to miss a deadline. To use this service, you must have either a driving licence issued in England, Scotland or Wales or a vehicle log book (V5C) in your name. The DVLA adds that drivers “cannot set up vehicle tax reminders …

Marriage 911: Don’t Ignore Verbal Abuse!

Marriage 911: Don’t Ignore Verbal Abuse!

“Dr. Cheryl… my partner gets really nasty when we argue. Can you help?” If that question hits close to home, you’re not alone. Many couples don’t think they have a “verbal abuse” problem. Because they’re not screaming. They’re not calling each other horrible names. Of course, for other couples, the screaming and name-calling are happening. But here’s the unpleasant truth… Verbal abuse takes many forms. Whether your unkind words are a whisper or a scream, all of them cause harm. Verbal abuse can destroy your relationship, even if you’re not yelling. Subtle nastiness also creates wounds. It’s Not Just Yelling: The Hidden Forms of Verbal Abuse When people hear “verbal abuse,” they think of the obvious: Swearing Insults Threats like “I’m done” or “I want a divorce” These overtly nasty words or threats to end the relationships are certainly damaging. I often think of that old schoolyard chant: “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me.” Wow, is that ever wrong! Broken bones heal (just ask my right ankle—I’ve fractured …

Asus Zenbook A16 (2026) Review: Savor the Power, Ignore the Beige

Asus Zenbook A16 (2026) Review: Savor the Power, Ignore the Beige

So, what’s not to like? Well, early compatibility problems slowed the initial uptake of Snapdragon X, and the CPU’s integrated graphics performance turned out to be pretty terrible. And to date, powerful onboard AI features just haven’t proven important, as most AI workloads are still being done in the cloud. With the second-generation X2, Qualcomm set out to deliver on the original promise of faster performance. But what exactly does “faster” mean? As with most claims in the PC computing space, it’s all about the benchmarks. On the Zenbook A16, the tests I ran indeed showcased exemplary performance from the X2 Elite Extreme, in some of the most widely used benchmarking tools, namely Geekbench 6 and Cinebench 2024. (I don’t have enough competitive Cinebench 2026 results to make wide comparisons yet on that benchmark.) The performance boost on Geekbench is particularly striking, with the A16 scoring 50 to 100 percent faster than competing systems from AMD and Intel. It’s even faster than the Apple MacBook M4 Pro, the last Mac for which I have comparable …

4 Things 1950s Housewives Understood About Happy Marriages That Today’s Couples Foolishly Ignore | Debra Smouse

I love 50s fashion, but 1950s gender politics? Not so much. As much as we’ve come to evolve beyond the “old” way of being a housewife, I have to admit I found myself still thinking about it; there were actually some really great points that we seem to have forgotten about what it’s really like to be a wife. Am I saying women need to transform into retro wives and harken back to the days of the little happy homemaker? No, not at all, but I do think some of that retro advice can up the happiness factor in your marriage now, if you add a modern twist to it. Here’s the advice I love, and how to update it for modern-day marriages. Here are the 4 things 1950s housewives understood about happy marriages that today’s couples foolishly ignore: 1. How to plan dinner Stokkete / Shutterstock, Canva Ever wonder why they call that chunk of time before dinner the Arsenic Hour? Well, it’s because everyone in the family is transitioning between work, school, and home, and not only are …

Ahead Of Trump-Xi Summit, Beijing Tells Chinese Firms To Ignore U.S. Sanctions On “Teapot” Refineries

Ahead Of Trump-Xi Summit, Beijing Tells Chinese Firms To Ignore U.S. Sanctions On “Teapot” Refineries

President Donald Trump is set to travel to Beijing in mid-May for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the first U.S. presidential visit to China in eight years, and a meeting already delayed once by the Iran war. The pair will obviously discuss the U.S.-Iran conflict and the resulting energy shock, which has hit Asia fastest and hardest. There is no shortage of issues for the two leaders to discuss, including Taiwan, trade, AI chip controls, rare earths, and sanctions. One important topic the two leaders will likely spend time on is the energy shock and the maximum pressure campaign imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control on Chinese independent “teapot” refineries, particularly in Shandong Province, due to their continued purchases and refining of Iranian crude. Perhaps last week’s sanctions on China’s teapot refiners are part of a leverage campaign by the Trump team ahead of the upcoming meeting. By Saturday morning, Beijing announced that companies in the country should ignore and not comply with U.S. sanctions targeting five domestic refineries.  …

The five gynaecological symptoms you should never ignore

The five gynaecological symptoms you should never ignore

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Relying on artificial intelligence for medical advice could be dangerous, a leading charity has warned, after finding that AI chatbots frequently provide inaccurate or outdated information regarding gynaecological cancers. The Eve Appeal, as part of its ‘Get Lippy’ campaign, commissioned a YouGov survey of over 2,000 women across the UK, revealing a concerning trend. Nearly one in ten (9%) admitted to seeking health advice from AI platforms after experiencing gynaecological symptoms. While 28% were prompted to consult a doctor by the chatbot’s responses, a worrying 24% felt falsely reassured that their symptoms were not cause for concern. Further investigation by The Eve Appeal involved testing 25 scenarios with ChatGPT. In a critical finding, the AI tool failed to identify ovarian cancer as a potential cause for persistent bloating lasting more than three weeks – a recognised key symptom of the disease. …
