The shiny finish, the knowledge that they’re not going to immediately chip during basic everyday tasks (unless you’re really unlucky)… Your life might be falling apart. But your nails? Impeccable. But the reality might not be quite as glossy. Over the past few years, a spate of headlines and studies have called out various gel nail ingredients as potential red flags for our health. Most recently, those headlines have centred around one specific ingredient, TPO, which is being phased out in the UK. So how worried do we need to be about our favourite beauty habit? Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, mercifully shortened to TPO, is a photoinitiator, a chemical …

Another option for doing so will soon be available. On June 9, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first new sunscreen ingredient to be permitted for over-the-counter consumer use in the U.S. since 1999 – a chemical called bemotrizinol. Bemotrizinol isn’t new – consumers in Europe and Asia have used it for decades. Some are hailing its long-overdue approval and arrival onto the U.S. sunscreen scene. The Missing Secret Ingredient of Self-Help Advice

The Missing Secret Ingredient of Self-Help Advice

The late, great American comedian George Carlin once joked, “I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, ‘Where’s the self-help section?’ She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.” While Carlin’s gag can be thought of as just a bit of fun, it also provides a shrewd comment on the state of self-help. The self-help industry is monstrous. There are books, podcasts, workshops, apps, retreats, Facebook groups, and other ways of advising what people can do to improve themselves, reach their potential, achieve inner contentment, and so on. Some self-help books sell millions of copies so, clearly, loads of people want to make their lives better. I’ve read a lot of self-help books. From my reading, I’ve noticed a pattern. First, someone describes a time when things were seriously awful. Then, while they were floundering about in the basement of rock-bottom, they realized, thought, or did something that profoundly turned things around. Next, as their life becomes more incredible than they thought possible, they write a book about all the wonderfulness …

A sunscreen ingredient used in Europe and Asia that blocks UVA and UVB rays has been approved for use in the U.S. mihailomilovanovic/iStockphoto/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption mihailomilovanovic/iStockphoto/Getty Images For the first time in nearly three decades, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new chemical UV filter for use in sunscreens sold in the U.S. And that has many dermatologists cheering. “This is a very big deal,” says Dr. Heather Rogers, a dermatologist in Seattle and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. The new ingredient is called bemotrizinol, and it has several advantages over the chemical sunscreen ingredients previously available in the U.S., Rogers says. “It hits like really every box for us that we have been waiting for as dermatologists and consumers,” Rogers says. Here’s what you need to know about this new ingredient and how it could lead to better sunscreens sold stateside. 1. It blocks both UVA and UVB rays Rogers says in general, you want to use sunscreens that are broad spectrum, meaning they protect against both …

Everything You Need to Know About the New FDA-Approved Sunscreen Ingredient

Everything You Need to Know About the New FDA-Approved Sunscreen Ingredient

People come up with all kinds of excuses to avoid wearing sunscreen. They hate the chalky consistency, the white cast, and the heavy feeling that many formulas leave behind. They can’t bear their eyes stinging as product drips when they run outdoors or simply exist in the summer heat. They’ve heard that chemical sunscreens are toxic and better off avoided altogether. But thanks to the FDA’s approval of a new sunscreen filter, many of those complaints could soon be lulled. After decades of lobbying, the FDA finally approved the new sunscreen ingredient bemotrizinol (aka Tinosorb S, or BEMT) on June 10. Long used across Europe and Asia, this chemical sunscreen filter will soon make its grand entry stateside—making skincare obsessives, industry insiders, and product developers sound a lot like sneakerheads. Why the approval is such a big win The FDA hasn’t approved a new sunscreen filter since the late ‘90s. Because sunscreen is regulated as a drug in the U.S., new filters face a far longer approval process than they do overseas. In terms of …

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Federal health regulators in the US have approved a new sunscreen ingredient for the first time in over 25 years, introducing a chemical long available in Europe and other global markets. The significant development offers Americans access to enhanced skin protection. The Food and Drug Administration said that bemotrizinol meets its stringent standards for safeguarding against harmful ultraviolet rays, noting its minimal irritation and absorption into the skin. The agency has deemed the ingredient safe for adults and children six months and older. Initially, bemotrizinol will be sold in the US under the brand name Parsol Shield by Dutch manufacturer DSM Nutritional Products, with a launch anticipated later this year. Following an 18-month exclusive period, other manufacturers will be permitted to incorporate the ingredient into their products. The introduction of new sunscreen products in the US has been notoriously slow for …

FDA OKs First New Sunscreen Ingredient in More Than 25 Years

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health regulators on Tuesday signed off on the first new sunscreen ingredient for the U.S. market in more than 25 years, giving Americans access to a skin-protecting chemical long used in Europe and other parts of the world. The Food and Drug Administration says the ingredient, bemotrizinol, met the agency’s standards for protecting from dangerous ultraviolet rays while causing little irritation or absorption into the skin. The ingredient is safe for adults and children 6 months and older, the agency stated in a release. Bemotrizinol will initially be sold in the U.S. by the Dutch manufacturer DSM Nutritional Products under the brand name Parsol Shield, which is expected to launch later in the year. After an 18-month exclusivity period, the ingredient will be available for use by other manufacturers. Experts say bemotrizinol will fill an important niche in the U.S. market: protecting against both ultraviolet A and B rays while not leaving white streaks associated with mineral-based sunscreens. “For decades, Americans have used outdated sunscreen tech while the rest of the …

FDA allows bemotrizinol, a popular sunscreen ingredient long used in Europe and Asia

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday expanded its list of allowed sunscreen ingredients to include the chemical compound bemotrizinol. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The change has been eagerly anticipated for years: Bemotrizinol has long been popular in Europe, Australia and some Asian countries. It also marks the first time in more than 20 years the FDA has permitted a new compound onto its sunscreen ingredient list. Why the excitement? Bemotrizinol is a UV light filter, meaning it blocks out harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. To be most effective, these filters need to be broad-spectrum, meaning they block UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause aging and wrinkles, while UVB rays cause sunburn, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Both contribute to skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. UV filters come in two formats: mineral or chemical. The mineral sunscreens — which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — block both UVA and UVB rays but often leave a white …

Could sodium replace lithium as the dominant ingredient in batteries?

Could sodium replace lithium as the dominant ingredient in batteries?

The world we live in today runs on batteries. But the lithium ion batteries that dominate the market are expensive and environmentally demanding to extract. The raw materials for lithium ion batteries are scarce and concentrated in a few geographical regions. This places continued pressure on supply chains. Sodium-ion batteries are a promising alternative because they use abundant materials. But sodium has shortcomings that have blocked it from being used as a replacement for lithium. In work carried out at the University of Limerick’s Bernal Institute, my team has now produced a battery that combines the strengths of sodium and lithium. This could lead to more sustainable batteries that reduce the supply chain pressures associated with lithium. The results have been published in the journal Nano Energy. Sodium-ion batteries lag behind lithium ones in their energy density. Energy density is the amount of energy stored in a battery relative to its weight or size. Lower battery energy densities have an impact on the devices and machines they power. If electric vehicles used battery modules with …

Ben McKenzie Says Crypto Has a Secret Ingredient: Male Loneliness

Ben McKenzie had a question: “When did WIRED die?” Specifically, the actor-director wanted to know when did WIRED “‘DIE,’ all caps.” McKenzie wasn’t asking for himself; he was engaging in the time-honored celebrity tradition of reading mean tweets. Although, in this case, the object wasn’t himself so much as the publication hosting the event. McKenzie, who famously played Ryan on The O.C. before becoming a leading voice of crypto skepticism, was sharing the stage with WIRED senior correspondent Andy Greenberg for the first of what will hopefully be a series of smaller events that we are calling WIRED@Night. On April 16, about 100 people gathered at event partner Ace Hotel Brooklyn to sip drinks from Aplos, Faccia Brutto, The Sorting Table, and Manojo and ponder the future of cryptocurrency. McKenzie, coauthor of Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, has a new independent documentary in theaters called Everyone Is Lying to You for Money. Greenberg, who often writes about crypto scams, talked to him about scenes from the book and movie, …
