The missing ingredient in limb regeneration may be oxygen

The missing ingredient in limb regeneration may be oxygen

Some amputated limbs heal into scars. Others begin building themselves back. That split has long sat at the center of regeneration research. Salamanders and frog tadpoles can regrow lost limbs, while mammals cannot. Scientists have debated for decades whether the gap comes from missing genes, different body plans, or some deeper evolutionary tradeoff. A new study points to a more immediate factor: the air around the wound, and how cells read it. A recent article in Science reports that researchers from Pr. Can Aztekin’s lab at the Max Planck Institute and EPFL found that the amount of oxygen present in the area surrounding the injured limb significantly affects the development of the limb’s regenerative ability. The study compared amputated limbs of frog tadpoles with developing limb buds of mouse embryos. It was found that increased oxygen inhibits, rather than stimulates, limb regeneration. Species-specific oxygen sensing governs the initiation of vertebrate limb regeneration. There’s a Secret Ingredient to Making Luxury Ice at Home

There’s a Secret Ingredient to Making Luxury Ice at Home

If you don’t want to bother with cutting your own cubes, then Klaris has you covered. Klaris has labored to make a kitchen countertop version of the classic Clinebell machine, and we loved it. Trouble is, it costs a hard-to-swallow $550. Now, however, the company has created a new, cheaper version called the Klaris Mini, which retails at a much more palatable $300. The small 8 x 8 x 8-inch box produces two ultra-clear, 2-inch cubes at a time, which can then be stored away in your freezer if you’re stocking up before a party. Nice Ice Now, these methods effectively banish those pesky bubbles, but what about replicating that glacial purity in your homegrown luxury ice? It turns out there are three solutions here, and all are easily attainable at home—the last one remarkably so. “Glacial ice is quite pure because it comes from rainwater,” Salzmann says, adding that the way to get cleaner water at home is to remove the ionic impurities (dissolved inorganic salts, minerals, and metals that carry a positive or …

Top chef reveals the two supermarkets that do great meat and fish – and shares most underrated store cupboard ingredient | Money News

Every month we interview top chefs from around the UK, hearing about their cheap food hacks, views on the industry and more. This time, we speak to multiple Michelin-starred chef Kenny Atkinson, chef-owner at Solstice and House of Tides in Newcastle and Solaya in London. I’ve been fortunate to work under some amazing chefs… but my time in London alongside a chef called Hywel Jones was where I really learned my craft as an aspiring chef. His ability to get the best out of ingredients and his techniques helped me learn to achieve this, which gave me the platform to build on and has helped shape the chef I am today. A cheap ingredient that a lot of people overlook is… offal. People often go for the prime expensive cuts, but offal is often very cheap. Tripe is something a lot of butchers give away for free, as no one wants it, but braised slowly in red wine, bacon and mushrooms, it is one of the most delicious things to eat. Why roses remain skincare’s most luxurious power ingredient

Why roses remain skincare’s most luxurious power ingredient

Beyond its fragrance, roses are rich in bioactive compounds including antioxidants and essential lipids that help hydrate, soothe and protect the skin. Several rose-derived ingredients are widely used in skincare today: Rose essential oil, distilled from rose petals and valued for its antioxidant properties Rose water, the aromatic water produced during distillation, known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects Rosehip oil and extracts, derived from the fruit of the rose plant and rich in essential fatty acids, pro-vitamin A and vitamin C that help address pigmentation and visible signs of ageing While roses have long been prized for their calming and hydrating properties, advances in extraction technology have introduced new actives such as rose stem cells and rose-derived PDRN, increasingly used in high-performance skincare. One of the latest developments is rose PDRN, a vegan-friendly alternative to the traditional salmon-derived ingredient used in regenerative skincare. Extracted from the stem cells of the Damascus rose, it is designed to mimic skin-repair signals that stimulate cellular renewal, improve elasticity and strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier. Some studies also …

In January, California became the first state to require food makers to add folic acid, a crucial vitamin, to corn masa flour used to make tortillas and other traditional foods widely used in the Latino community. The long-delayed move aims to reduce Hispanic infants’ disproportionately high rates of serious conditions called neural tube defects, which claimed Lopez’s son, Gabriel Cude, when he was 10 days old. “It’s such a small effort for such a tremendous impact,” said Lopez, 44, who lives in Bakersfield and is now a lawyer with two young daughters. “There is very little that I wouldn’t do to spare anybody this heartache.” Andrea Lopez cradles her son, Gabriel …

Psilocybin might not be the most psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms, new research suggests

A new study published in Scientific Reports suggests that the therapeutic effects of psychedelic mushrooms likely rely on a complex interplay of multiple chemical compounds rather than just a single active ingredient. Scientists found evidence that several minor compounds in these mushrooms work together to interact with brain receptors, potentially explaining why natural extracts often produce different effects than synthetic versions. Psychedelic mushrooms, often called magic mushrooms, belong to a group of fungi that naturally produce mind-altering chemicals. These fungi have been used in spiritual ceremonies for centuries and are currently gaining mainstream medical attention. Clinical trials frequently use these substances as tools alongside psychotherapy to treat severe depression and anxiety. Most modern clinical studies use a synthetic, lab-made version of psilocybin, the primary psychoactive compound in the mushrooms. When a person consumes psilocybin, their body converts it into psilocin, which interacts with the brain to alter perception and emotion. However, people who use whole mushroom extracts often report different or enhanced experiences compared to those taking synthetic psilocybin. “Mental illness is increasing globally, creating …

Columbia Sportswear is collaborating with Breakside Brewery to offer a “taste of the outdoors for game day indoors” just in time for this year’s NFL championship, according to the sportswear brand’s website. The new beer, named Nature Calls, is made with Bull Run River water from Oregon that is infused with bear poop — collected in Montana from American black bears — during the brewing process. The beer also contains malted grains grown in the Pacific Northwest and notes of honey and huckleberry. Columbia Sportswear made it clear that despite the unusual ingredient, the beer is absolutely safe to drink. “When we say engineered …

Why failure is a necessary ingredient for success – especially in the era of AI

Why failure is a necessary ingredient for success – especially in the era of AI

On the arm of Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka is tattooed a quote by Samuel Beckett: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” This excerpt from novella Worstward Ho seems motivational and suggests that perseverance is needed for success. However, the word failure carries a weight with it, especially if used as a label, as if it were an essential part of someone. Yet, in evolution, the creative arts, engineering and education, failure is a process – without which success is not achievable. “Error” might actually be a better term than failure, because error generates variation. And this variation is important in understanding the uniqueness of human creativity. Generative AI can create fashion models, award-winning art and actors. But generative AI lacks the artist’s drive, their ability to reflect and know the significance about why and for whom the art is being created. If we consider creativity as a process, then in order to create new and novel art, errors, mistakes, dead ends are required. In short, failure. Generative AI …
