Killer robots are here – we must finally decide whether to accept them

Should drones be allowed to kill autonomously? Shutterstock/Thongsuk7824 For years, we have had unconfirmed reports and rumours that AI-controlled weapons have killed soldiers on the battlefield without a human in the loop. Now, we know it has happened. As we report here, the use of autonomous killers in a test exercise marks a watershed in warfare. But we shouldn’t be surprised. The technology has existed for some time and humans have never invented a weapon and then refrained from using it. That doesn’t mean we can’t reverse course. The logic for a ban on autonomous weapons is simple: deploying AI without human oversight risks weapons accidentally targeting troops on the wrong side or even civilians. What’s more, ethicists say that such weapons deprive combatants of their dignity, make war too easy to wage and muddy the waters when it comes to responsibility for lethal action. But if we are to ban these weapons, just as we have done with cluster bombs and lasers designed to blind soldiers, we should have acted before they arrived, not …

EastEnders airs killer confession and affair caught out in BBC iPlayer release

EastEnders airs killer confession and affair caught out in BBC iPlayer release

The drama doesn’t stop in EastEnders, as George Knight (Colin Salmon) confessed to aiding in the death of his racist adoptive father Eddie (Christopher Fairbank). Last week, George had one final confrontation with sick Eddie, who was responsible for the death of his birth father Henry Asare four decades ago. Having exchanged cash with Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington) so that he could spend his dying days in Albert Square, Eddie implied to his family that his stint behind bars had helped him reform, and that he deeply regretted his actions. George was mortified to realised that, by allowing him to stay at No 1, he’d enabled daughter Gina (Francesca Henry) to be subjected to further racist abuse. Eddie had questioned Gina Knight’s (Francesca Henry) relationship with Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) – saying that he could do better than to be with her – and when he relaid this to her, she was sickened. Keeping Score Is a Relationship Killer

Keeping Score Is a Relationship Killer

Leah and Omar had always thought of themselves as a strong team. Leah, a pediatric nurse, worked long shifts at the hospital. Omar, a freelance videographer, balanced unpredictable hours, client deadlines, and the pressure of inconsistent income. Together, they coordinated demanding schedules while raising their two young children. Early in their relationship, their differences complemented each other well. Leah brought structure and consistency. Omar brought flexibility, humor, and creativity. Both admired how hard the other worked and often described themselves as partners who could adapt to almost anything together. After welcoming twins, life demanded even more of them. They felt constantly exhausted, and the quality time they once enjoyed together gradually disappeared. Although neither questioned the other’s love or commitment, both began feeling overextended and increasingly disconnected from one another. Crash: When Exhaustion Turns Into Scorekeeping The tension did not begin with one major argument. Instead, it developed slowly through dozens of small interactions. Leah became irritated when she came home after difficult shifts and found unfinished chores waiting for her. When she pointed out …

A California man has been sentenced to more than 200 years behind bars for an “extraordinarily violent” murder of a 59 year old man, who was dragged with an electrical cord wrapped around his neck for more than 300 feet, according to authorities. Kenneth McNally Jr, 42, received his sentence in San Diego County Court on Tuesday on multiple charges, including first-degree murder in relation to the killing of Samuel Holthaus, prosecutors said in a news release. McNally was on probation following an attack on a dog with an axe and was residing on-and-off at trailers in the El Cajon area when he was observed “aggressively demanding rides off the property while appearing to conceal a weapon beneath a jacket” in September 2023, prosecutors said. More than a year following the horrific scene, a witness informed authorities he witnessed McNally shoot Holthaus before tying an electrical cord around his neck and fastening the cord to his truck prior to dragging him approximately 329 feet to a grave. After knifing Henry Nowak, Vickrum Digwa told his mother to take the murder weapon away, along with its sheath and belt, as the 18-year-old student lay dying. She did so. Now, Kiran Kaur, 53, has been found guilty of assisting an offender, and is due to be sentenced on July 17. Judge William Mousely K.C. told Digwa during his sentencing: “You bear some responsibility for the offence committed by your mother when you asked her to take the murder weapon away from you after she arrived on the scene. “Your lies to the police about what had happened led, in part, to the arrests of your father, brother and mother for murder and their being taken into police custody. Your mother has remained in custody for the past seven months.” Digwa lied to police, claiming he had been the victim of a racist attack. The Judge added: “I am sure that Henry had said nothing racist. You are the only person to make that claim and it is completely at odds with his previous character. …

Family Of Henry Nowak’s Migrant Killer Sparks Outrage After Asking For “No Further Pain” In Tone-Deaf Statement

Via Remix News, The family of Vickrum Digwa has been accused of adding insult to injury after issuing a statement asking that Henry Nowak’s murder not be used to cause “further pain,” despite fierce public anger over the way the 18-year-old was stabbed, falsely accused, handcuffed and left dying in the street. Vickrum Digwa was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years on Monday after stabbing 18-year-old Henry Nowak multiple times in Southampton. According to the account provided, Henry was stabbed five times, including twice in the back of the legs, once in the face and once fatally in the chest. The case has caused national outrage not only because of the killing itself, but the wider context.
