Digital Notebook Throwdown (2026): Kindle Scribe, ReMarkable Paper Pure

Digital Notebook Throwdown (2026): Kindle Scribe, ReMarkable Paper Pure

I also like that the Kindle Scribe stylus has a button on it that switches to highlight mode, which is especially convenient as a reader if you wanted to easily switch from underlining or note-taking to highlighting a passage. While the ReMarkable is more accurate and has an impressive paper feel to it, I actually think either Scribe model feels a little more comfortable and convenient to use, especially since you don’t need to pay extra for the eraser point. But the slimmer second-generation Scribe is slightly more comfortable to write with, at least for my hands. Reading Winner: Both Kindle Scribes Photograph: Nena Farell If you’re looking at these devices more as a reader and less as a note-taker, then you’ll want to pick a Kindle Scribe. While you can read books on any ReMarkable device, whether it’s the Paper Pure or another model, you have to manually download the files onto your ReMarkable through the ReMarkable desktop or mobile app. That means you need to have the PDF or ePUB file version of …

What e-reader tablets do published authors use? My survey found results beyond the Kindle

A newer Kindle option is the Kindle Colorsoft, which is a color e-reader with a 150 ppi display for color images, along with up to 120 nits of brightness to really make your pages and color images pop.  Jason Rich, an author of over 70 books, including “Optimize Your Daily Routine as a Busy Entrepreneur,” said he is a fan of the Colorsoft’s color and glare-free display when he reads for pleasure.  “Unlike a traditional phone or tablet screen, the Kindle causes no eyestrain. Having tried out many of the eReaders on the market, I found this one to be the most versatile and enjoyable to read on,” he said, adding, “As an author, I appreciate being able to see content from books the way the author and publisher intended, so a color screen is preferable to me.” Review: Kindle Colorsoft: One of the best E Ink tablets I’ve tested The Colorsoft’s color features also let you highlight passages in your books in different colors and organize them into categories (i.e., quotes in yellow, facts in blue, …

Kobo is the Kindle alternative that most people never consider

Kobo is the Kindle alternative that most people never consider

I have two Kobo e-readers on my nightstand right now, a Clara Colour and a Libra Colour, and I use them both more than I ever used my Kindle. I didn’t set out to switch ecosystems (though the less of my money goes to Amazon, the better), but Kobo does several things that matter to me as a reader that Amazon simply doesn’t. If you’ve been assuming Kindle is the default and Kobo is a niche alternative, that assumption is worth revisiting. The hardware: what Kindle doesn’t offer Two models, but one clear value The Kobo Libra Colour ($219.99) has a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 color display, 32GB of storage, IPX8 waterproofing, Bluetooth for audiobooks, physical page-turn buttons, and optional stylus support via the Kobo Stylus 2. The Kobo Clara Colour ($149.99) runs the same screen technology in a smaller 6-inch body with 16GB of storage and no buttons. The closest Kindle equivalents are the Kindle Paperwhite (2024), which starts at $159.99 with lockscreen ads and $179.99 without. The Kindle Colorsoft 16GB is $249.99 …

Your Kindle has a hidden email address that instantly delivers any document

Your Kindle has a hidden email address that instantly delivers any document

Most Kindle owners use the eReader to buy books. And the cable accessory to sideload other documents or their own books. But buried inside every Kindle account is a dedicated email address that can push any document, like a PDF, an article, or a research paper, straight to your device in seconds. It’s a cable-less, app-less shortcut. This humble email address, which Amazon gives you for free, has more than one use. I still don’t know why it took me so much time to truly appreciate its utility. Once I did, it helped me turn the Kindle into a dedicated inbox for reading articles that I once procrastinated over. Related 10 things you should try on your Amazon Kindle besides reading books Discover ten surprisingly useful ways to use your Kindle beyond reading. These 8 Kindle models just lost support, but that doesn’t make them obsolete

These 8 Kindle models just lost support, but that doesn’t make them obsolete

Kyle Kucharski/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways If your Kindle is from 2012 or earlier, access to the Kindle Store and software updates has ended. These Kindle users will still have access to the books already on their devices. Kindle ereaders and Fire tablets from 2012 or older can’t buy, borrow, or download new content. Amazon just ended software support for eight Kindle and Fire tablet models from before 2013. As a result, Kindle owners with these older devices will no longer have access to the Kindle Store to buy new books or download software updates. Still, they will retain access to their existing Kindle Library, including purchased books.  Also: This e-reader lets you view in color, and it’s $60 cheaper now Truly, Amazon offers Kindle devices a generous support period, especially when compared to other tablets. A Kindle gets anywhere between 10 and 15 years of software support before Amazon makes major cutoffs, while most tablets and smartphones from other manufacturers on the market get between 3 and 7 …

Users turn to jailbreaking their older Kindles as Amazon ends support

Users turn to jailbreaking their older Kindles as Amazon ends support

Many people are jailbreaking their Kindles following the news that Amazon is ending technical support for older models. On May 20, Amazon will end support for the following Kindle devices: Kindle 1st Generation Kindle 2nd Generation Kindle DX  Kindle DX Graphite Kindle Keyboard Kindle 4 Kindle 5 Kindle Touch Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation Kindle Fire 1st Generation  Kindle Fire 2nd Generation  Kindle Fire HD 7  Kindle Fire HD 8.9 The move means users will only be able to use their devices to read content that’s already downloaded. So, naturally, people are jailbreaking them. Jailbreaking refers to bypassing the software restrictions imposed by Amazon on Kindle devices. This process allows users to install custom fonts, new screensavers, alternative reading apps, and even third-party tools that expand the Kindle’s functionality. However, it’s important to note that jailbreaking a Kindle might violate Amazon’s terms of service. In many jurisdictions, jailbreaking isn’t considered a criminal offense for personal use, but it may become a crime if it involves copyright infringement, illegal software distribution, or the sale of modified devices. …

In my hunt for the best e-readers, I’ve been determined to find a great alternative to a Kindle or a Kobo. Don’t get me wrong, I love both of these e-readers and generally think they are the best e-readers you can buy, but I know there’s a hunger for variety in the e-reader community beyond the big two. I’ve tried Barnes & Noble’s Nook, Remarkable e-ink tablets, and Boox e-readers, but none of them have impressed me. But the Durobo Krono caught my eye at CES 2026. I’ve often called an e-reader a library in your pocket, and the Durobo Krono is more than that. It’s a library, bookstore, notebook, and MP3 player all in one. But that’s a lot of promise in a palm-sized device. Luckily, it totally nails it. Here’s what you need …
