The 25-year-old springs from a sofa on the rooftop terrace of the Chopard Suite at the Hôtel Martinez for a welcome embrace amid a dizzying 24 hours at the Cannes Film Festival. [This story contains mild spoilers from the Neighbors finale.] A few days ago, 72-year-old Danny Smiechowski left his house to greet his chauffeur. There was a limousine parked outside, waiting for him. For much of his life, Smiechowski had been an outcast in his San Diego neighborhood, insulted and ostracized for his penchant for wearing nothing but yellow briefs while exercising in his driveway. After winning best actor at the 2026 Oscars, Sinners star Michael B. Jordan offered encouraging words for other artists looking to sink their teeth into pursuing a passion. While speaking at the press room after accepting the Academy Award, the star was asked what this victory should signify to rising creatives. Jordan starred with a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler‘s Warner Bros. drama that landed a leading 16 Oscar nominations before winning in four categories. “My father always told me, ‘Don’t expect anything to be handed to you,’” Jordan said backstage. “You do the work, and everything else will figure itself out.” The Creed star acknowledged that the Oscar represents “a pinnacle” of his industry and that it can be easy to feel competitive about winning one. Timothée Chalamet was front and center at the 2026 Oscars on Sunday night. Chalamet was nominated for best actor for his role in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme. The A24 film stars the actor as Marty Mauser, a ping-pong hustler trying to make it out of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where the movie filmed. The cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Emory Cohen and Sandra Bernhard. Marty Supreme earned nine nominations in total. Before I even read about the Timothée Chalamet controversy, I was getting messages from all over the world asking if I had any opinion about it. After all, I’ve been spending the last couple of decades working full time on expanding the reach of opera, in a place far from the centers of the operatic cosmos. Surely I must be personally affronted by such a casual dismissal of my life’s work! The thing is, although it’s a bit much to say that “no one” is interested in opera, statistics would seem to indicate that world-wide the audience is shrinking — just like the audience for non-blockbuster cinema.  But where I am, it’s not shrinking. When I returned to Thailand almost thirty years ago, there was virtually no opera to speak of here, but now there’s a bit of a scene. The fallout from a misconstrued comment Timothée Chalamet recently made about keeping shared, in-person art experiences alive is coming to define the closing stretch of his best actor Oscar campaign, as fellow recent nominee-turned-pariah Karla Sofía Gascón is now weighing in on the controversy with her own humorous take. Despite critical acclaim and early awards accolades for his starring role in Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet suffered his second best actor loss at a high-profile Oscar precursor award show in a week, losing the Actor Award to Sinners‘ Michael B. Jordan after losing the BAFTA Awards’ best actor prize to surprise winner Robert Aramayo of I Swear. Additionally, Marty Supreme overall was shut out at the Actor Awards. The film seemed like a strong performer among SAG-AFTRA voters when nominations were announced earlier this year, with the Actor Awards even nominating Odessa A’zion for best supporting actress, as part of the film’s three nominations, including for the top prize of best cast. Marty Supreme did, however, receive somewhat of a viral marketing moment with host Kristen Bell’s star-studded table tennis tournament, the winner of which received a trophy that resembled Chalamet. Wondering what Timothée Chalamet‘s night at the 2026 Actor Awards was like? The Hollywood Reporter has you covered. On Sunday night, Chalamet was nominated for best actor at the awards show for his role as ping-pong hustler Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme.
