What’s the view from your sofa? I have a telly sofa, but my second sofa is much more interesting because I live in Hout Bay in Cape Town. British actress Michaela Coel is currently promoting not one but two highly anticipated films, and her wardrobe is proving just as captivating as her on-screen performances.  The 38-year-old takes on the role of an art dealer in The Christophers and a fashion designer in Mother Mary, where she stars alongside Anne Hathaway. The actor and writer first broke through with the 2015 hit Chewing Gum, about a sex-obsessed virgin, but it was her critically acclaimed 2020 drama I May Destroy You that catapulted her into the spotlight. The blistering Bafta and Emmy-winning show was a semi-autobiographical comedy-drama about a young writer named Arabella, played by Coel, whose life is changed when she is spiked and raped. Coel, 38, has sometimes cast friends in her work, with her real-life drama school classmate Paapa Essiedu playing one of Arabella’s best friends – but mixing friendship and business hasn’t always gone well for the star. Thandiwe Newton, Ncuti Gatwa Cast in Michaela Coel’s New HBO Series

Michaela Coel’s next series for HBO and the BBC, First Day on Earth, is adding to its cast as filming gets underway. Thandiwe Newton, Ncuti Gatwa, Maxine Peake and Danny Sapani have joined Coel in the show, in which Coel plays a novelist at a personal crossroads. The series is Coel’s first as creator, writer and star since the critically hailed and Emmy- and BAFTA-winning I May Destroy You. Aside from character names, details about the roles for the four actors are being kept quiet for now. Newton (Westworld, Line of Duty) will play a character named Anya; Gatwa (Doctor Who, Barbie) will play Darren; Peake (Say Nothing) will play Helen; and Sapani (Halo) will play Ernest. HBO and the BBC placed a series order for First Day on Earth in August 2024. The show comes from Various Artists Limited (which also produced I May Destroy You) and is co-produced by HBO and the BBC in association with A24. In among the romantic story of Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) at the end of Bridgerton season 3, fans of the period drama were also left on a bit of a cliffhanger as it related to Francesca (Hannah Dodd). She may have had an intimate marriage ceremony and wed Lord John Stirling (Victor Alli), but there was a clear spark between Francesca and John’s cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza) once they met. Their season 3 meeting only led fans into overdrive about what the future could hold and seeing as we now know that Francesca is set to be one of the leads of an upcoming season, many will be waiting to see what becomes of her connection with Michaela.
