I Had Warning Signs For Years But A Heart Attack Revealed The Rare Genetic Disease Doctors Missed

When I think about who I was growing up and what brought me joy, I think about the feeling of the waves under my board when I’m surfing. I think about fixing classic cars with my dad. And now, I think about spending time with my sons on warm days at the beach. Looking back, my journey to being a dad to two wonderful sons was very nearly cut short before it even began when I was diagnosed with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH), an ultra-rare inherited cholesterol condition that affects approximately 1,300 people in the U.S.  It’s the most severe form of familial hypercholesterolemia — a defect in how the body clears low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL cholesterol], referred to as “bad” cholesterol. People with HoFH are at risk for premature atherosclerotic disease and cardiac events, even in their teenage years.  I had warning signs for years, but it took a heart attack to reveal the rare genetic disease doctors missed Photoroyalty via Shutterstock I’d always been active growing up, but when I was around 16, …

Riot Women star Joanna Scanlan reveals the big difference with her new role in thriller Missed Call

Having just been seen on our screens in BBC’s Riot Women, Joanna Scanlan is now heading up brand new thriller, Missed Call. In the new five-parter, Scanlan stars as single mother Sarah who is delivered every parent’s worst nightmare when she receives a missed call from her daughter Katie, who is abroad on a school exchange. With the local forces appearing not to take her concerns seriously, Sarah takes matters into her own hands to find out just what’s happened to her daughter. The role itself certainly feels like a world away from Scanlan’s role as Beth Thornton in the Sally Wainwright drama, but did it feel as such when embodying the character? “It did actually [feel worlds apart], because Beth is depressed,” Scanlan told Radio Times. “She’s a depressed person. And yes, she goes on a journey and kind of finds herself to a certain extent. But I think she’s sensitive, highly intelligent and worried about everything going wrong. “And you know, she’s in a gloom state. She’s, let’s face it, suicidal and Sarah …

Robert MacIntyre Has Awkward Masters Exit After a Middle-Finger Moment, Missed Cut and No Interviews

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Robert MacIntyre made no public apologies for his fiery behavior at the Masters this week, breezing past reporters after his first-round 80 and then declining interview requests after a 71 on Friday that caused him to miss the cut. The 29-year-old MacIntyre, who tied for second last week at the Texas Open, raised some eyebrows Thursday at Augusta National — where decorum is held in high esteem — when he flashed the middle finger upon hitting a ball into the water. MacIntyre also slammed a couple of clubs and muttered some curse words loud enough to be caught live by the TV mics. It was unclear whether Augusta National took any disciplinary action. MacIntyre finished at 7 over, missing the cut by three shots, and headed straight to the Player Services Building. At one point, someone posted to his Instagram story what appeared to be an AI-produced image of a Masters gnome in his likeness giving the bird. Whoever it was had a sense of humor about things. He was 3 …

Government prepares to sue Roman Abramovich after he missed deadline to release £2.5bn from Chelsea sale | Politics News

Sanctioned former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been put on notice that legal action is coming from the UK government after failing “to do the right thing” and release the £2.5bn from the club’s sale to help Ukraine. There has been a standoff since Mr Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea in 2022 after being sanctioned at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in a targeting of oligarchs. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warned in December that Mr Abramovich could be sued if he does not pay up. Now a government spokesperson has said: “We gave Roman Abramovich his last chance to do the right thing. Once again, he has failed to make the donation he committed to. “We will now take further steps to ensure that the promise he made at the time of the Chelsea sale is kept.” The government issued a licence in December permitting the release of the cash to a new foundation for humanitarian causes in Ukraine but it required Mr Abramovich’s approval which has not come. The …

Wendi McLendon-Covey Missed Oscars Bridesmaids Reunion After ‘Neck Lift’ Surgery

Bridesmaids actor Wendi McLendon-Covey has shared the real reason she didn’t join her former co-stars at the Oscars over the weekend. Over the weekend, the Bridesmaids cast took part in a skit at the Academy Awards to commemorate the film’s 15th anniversary. However, fans quickly noticed that the group was one bridesmaid down, with Wendi not joining Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne and Ellie Kemper at the event. At the time, director Paul Feig claimed: “I just heard that she was not available. She might even be travelling, I’m not sure. But we will miss her terribly, because I love Wendi.” Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Ellie Kemper on stage at the 2026 Oscars Since then, Wendi has set the record straight on her absence, revealing that she actually couldn’t attend as she is recovering from cosmetic surgery. “In response to some of the DMs I’m getting: I had a neck lift last week because I’m tired of looking like a melting candle. So I had to skip …

Oscars 2026: Bridesmaids, Baby Yoda and ballet bites back – the bits of the Oscars you might have missed | Ents & Arts News

One Battle After Another led the night, taking six Oscars, including best picture, best director and best supporting actor. Sinners followed in second place, with four wins, then Frankenstein with three, but of course, the Oscars are about more than just numbers. Here are our stand-out moments for 2026. Timmy, Leo and Ted get roasted Second-time host Conan O’Brien did not hold back in his opening monologue. Taking a swipe at Timothee Chalamet‘s recent comment that “nobody cares” about opera and ballet, he joked: “I should tell you, security is tight tonight, I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities.” O’Brien added, “They’re just mad you left out jazz”. A close-up of the audience showed a laughing Chalamet, sitting next to his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, who was wearing a sparkling red gown with a plunging neckline. LAFD testimony details missed chances to fully put out Lachman fire

LAFD testimony details missed chances to fully put out Lachman fire

Jacob Ulibarri spent about six hours on New Year’s Day last year squashing hot spots where the Lachman fire had burned. The rookie Los Angeles firefighter arrived sometime after 7 a.m., when the smoky areas were all over and easy to see. By the time the next crew swapped with his that afternoon, they were scarcer: “One every 30 minutes, roughly,” Ulibarri recalled. At that point, Battalion Chief Martin Mullen, who was running the mop-up operation, had walked three laps around the perimeter of the fire. He recalled one hot spot he saw about 10 a.m., which crews hit with water. Later in the afternoon, Mullen did his fourth and last loop and left the area for good. He decided to leave the hoses out overnight, just in case. Over the next two days, a series of communication failures and questionable decisions led crews to leave the area prematurely, with embers from the small Jan. 1 fire later reigniting into the devastating Palisades fire. A firefighter picking up hoses on Jan. 2 found crackling, red-hot …

We Missed the Point of These Great Science Fiction and Fantasy Books

This content contains affiliate links. When you buy through these links, we may earn an affiliate commission. Why do we love science fiction and fantasy so much? Is it the escapism? Is it how those writers can capture our attention with the breadth and depth of their imaginations? Personally, I think it’s because SF/F speaks truth to power from an angle. Literary and contemporary fiction are often too on-the-nose, speaking directly to the troubles of our world in ways that make us want to tune out. When sci-fi and fantasy do it, they’re speaking to those same troubles but through the lens of some fantastical, magical setting, or through an epic battle between warring galaxies. We read, turning page after page to find out what happens next, all the while reading about our own lives, though in a more palatable way. And yet, it seems we’re often missing the point of these great science fiction and fantasy books. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood Atwood’s classic has always been a cautionary tale about the frightening …

SETI may have missed alien signals because of space weather

SETI may have missed alien signals because of space weather

Is there anyone out there? NASA/SDO We may have been missing signals from intelligent aliens because of solar wind. Researchers from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute say this means we have been watching for the wrong type of signal, potentially failing to spot promising evidence of extraterrestrial life, but the chances of a future discovery are now higher. The not-for-profit organisation carries out research to help prove the existence of alien life, which includes listening for extraterrestrial radio signals that cannot be explained by natural cosmological phenomena. Such a signal was previously expected to be a sharp, distinct radio signal in a narrow frequency range. But the new research suggests that such signals that are sent from distant planets may end up being made fainter and wider in the frequency band – essentially blurred slightly – as they pass through the plasma winds of stars. Vishal Gajjar and Grayce Brown at the SETI Institute calculated the scale of the effect on radio transmissions from spacecraft in our own solar system, then extrapolated that …
