NASA Ends Mars Mission 6 Months After Losing Communication With Spacecraft

Authored by T.J. Muscaro via The Epoch Times, After more than a decade of service, unlocking treasure troves of insights into Mars’s atmosphere, NASA announced on June 3 that its MAVEN mission has come to an end after a still unknown anomaly threw the spacecraft off course and drained its battery. NASA’s MAVEN mission is observing the upper atmosphere of Mars to help understand climate change on the planet. MAVEN entered its science phase on Nov. 16, 2014. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Short for “Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution,” NASA’s MAVEN mission launched in November 2013 to study the Red Planet’s atmosphere, specifically how it interacts with solar flares and other types of space weather, as well as readings of the dust storms. The mission was supposed to last one year, but the hardware continued to operate for another decade, providing insights crucial to sending a human crew there with the right protection in the future. It was also able to give ground systems early warning of incoming coronal ejecta from the sun. “MAVEN …

NASA announces end of long-operating Mars probe’s mission

WASHINGTON, May 29 : NASA announced on Tuesday the end of the mission of its MAVEN spacecraft, which spent more than 11 years orbiting Mars to study the atmosphere of Earth’s planetary neighbor, after losing contact with the robotic probe six months ago. MAVEN, short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, was the U.S. space agency’s first mission devoted to observing the Martian atmosphere and its evolution. Launched in 2013, it began orbiting Mars in 2014 and exceeded its originally planned one-year mission by a decade. NASA officials told reporters on Wednesday that they last heard from MAVEN on December 6, when it experienced an unexpected loss of signal after passing behind Mars from Earth’s vantage point, and was later determined to be in “an unrecoverable state.” Mike Moreau, MAVEN project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said a NASA review board is working to determine what caused the failure. MAVEN was involved in relaying Mars science data from assets such as the robotic surface rovers Curiosity and Perseverance to Earth. Tiffany …

I’ve Used GoPro’s Mission 1 Pro. Here’s What You Should Know

I’ve Used GoPro’s Mission 1 Pro. Here’s What You Should Know

I’ve been using GoPro’s Mission 1 Pro action camera for a few weeks now. I’m not quite ready to slap a final verdict on it, but I’ve definitely learned a few things that are worth knowing if you’re considering buying one. I’ve tested a range of features, from the new slow-motion mode to shooting 50 megapixel stills, and it’s impressed in some ways — and left me wanting more in others.  But I’m not yet ready to give it a review score. The reason being that I’ve had a very early sample with unfinished software that isn’t representative of how it might work if you went and bought one. My first model even had a pre-production lens, which was changed on the second unit I received. So while there are some things I’ve been able to test, it’s not fair to the camera to base my review off what I’ve seen so far.  But here’s what I can tell you. How much is the Mission 1 Pro? The Mission 1 Pro is on sale now …

Britain Preparing for Mission That Could Clear Strait of Hormuz

Britain Preparing for Mission That Could Clear Strait of Hormuz

President Trump has fumed repeatedly about Britain’s failing to help the U.S. wage war on Iran. The United Kingdom responded by allowing U.S. bombers to strike Iran from southern England, while Britain’s fighter jets have flown thousands of defensive missions across the region. Now the British military is embarking on yet another phase: to secure the Strait of Hormuz if the war comes to an end, dispatching an advanced destroyer to the region and another ship armed with autonomous mine-hunting equipment. The move to remove mines from the waterway could also serve to deflect further criticism from Mr. Trump. The war with Iran was not Britain’s making, but the country cannot escape the conflict’s far-reaching effects. Halted traffic in the strait has crippled international shipping and driven up energy prices in the United States and around the world. The British military took a handful of reporters on Friday to Gibraltar, a small patch of British territory at the tip of Spain. The trip seemed like an effort to highlight its military capabilities and resolve, and …

From UFOs to the Epstein Files, Anna Paulina Luna Is on a Mission to Reveal the Government’s Biggest Secrets

From UFOs to the Epstein Files, Anna Paulina Luna Is on a Mission to Reveal the Government’s Biggest Secrets

“I just think that younger people are more—we have more tech that we’re able to access whereas historically the government did kind of try to silo this information and gaslight people,” she said. “And so I think right now the aspect of, ‘Hey, maybe we’re not the only thing out there’ is a very real question that many people ask themselves, and the stigma doesn’t seem to be as strong with the younger generation starting with Gen X onward.” The president, in announcing the declassification of the UFO files, made a similar acknowledgement. “I thought I’d save it for this crowd,” Trump told the young conservative audience at a Turning Point USA event in April, “because you’re a little bit out-there.” Doubling down on his outreach, he recently posted an AI-generated meme of himself and Secret Service officers escorting an alien in handcuffs. The congresswoman, however, insists that the UFO question has more wide-reaching appeal. “The UAP topic specifically is one of the biggest, most bicameral and bipartisan things in Washington, DC,” she said, pointing …

‘The end of the road’: the man on a mission to take Barcelona back from overtourism | Barcelona

After decades of relentlessly marketing their vibrant Mediterranean city, the Barcelona authorities have appointed a man on a mission to say “no more” – and, he says, to return its most iconic market back to local residents. Last year, the Barcelona area attracted 26 million visitors, up 2.4% on 2024. The appointment of José Antonio Donaire as the city’s first commissioner for sustainable tourism represents a significant change of heart and a shift away from viewing tourism as an unalloyed good to believing it is alienating citizens and eroding the Catalan capital’s identity. “We’ve reached the end of the road, Barcelona has reached the maximum number of tourists it can accommodate,” he says. “We don’t want more tourists, not even one more, but we need to manage those we have.” Tourists visit Park Guell. Trump’s Tribute Mission to China

Trump’s Tribute Mission to China

In the centuries when dynasties ruled China, kings and chieftains across Asia sent “tribute missions” to the imperial court to pay homage to the emperor in exchange for access to the empire’s riches and favors. Donald Trump’s trip to Beijing this week recalled those missions. The United States president arrived hat in hand, seeking money and promises from China’s latter-day emperor, Xi Jinping. The visit, meant to establish stability after a decade of trade wars and acrimonious one-upmanship, instead highlighted how the balance of power is tipping away from Washington. Despite America’s economic, military, and diplomatic heft, Trump’s missteps have put him and the country on the back foot in dealings with the far more disciplined Xi. Trump opened the proceedings with his usual kowtowing. “You’re a great leader. I say it to everybody,” Trump told Xi at a welcoming ceremony yesterday at the Great Hall of the People. “Sometimes people don’t like me saying it. But I say it anyway because it’s true.” The fawning didn’t get him very far. In the meeting that …
