Steph Curry Is Entering a Bold New Sneaker Era

Steph Curry Is Entering a Bold New Sneaker Era

The wait is over. After Stephen Curry split from his longtime shoe sponsor Under Armour in November (taking his Curry Brand shingle along with him), sneakerheads were left wondering where the generational NBA superstar would set up shop next. Was a return to Nike, the brand he began his pro career with, in the cards? Would he go across the street to Adidas, or perhaps link up with the hoops upstarts at New Balance? And most importantly: After years of lackluster kicks at UA, would the Chef finally get a signature model worthy of his magnetic personality and landscape-altering talent? Now, following a season spent rocking a slew of cult classics from across the basketball-shoe spectrum (many of which he recently auctioned off to support his foundation), the Golden State Warriors icon has finally given us a definitive answer: Steph Curry is officially a Li-Ning man, penning a reported $400-million, 10-year contract with the Chinese sportswear giant. If you’re surprised Curry didn’t link up with any of the other more obvious names in the game, …

Spike Lee Interview: New York Knicks Face the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals

Vanity Fair: As we speak, it isn’t just your Knicks that are prepping for a title shot. Your other favorite team, Arsenal, is about to play in the Champions League final. What did you do to make all this happen? Spike Lee: [Laughs] Here’s the thing. I became an Arsenal fan when Thierry Henry joined the squad. But I was reading history about Arsenal—I forget the year, but they had, like, an all-black team. Brothers! So that really gained my interest. I went to a couple of games, and Thierry and I are friends. In New York City, at least, Arsenal has become kind of the hipster fan team. Mayor Zohran Mamdani is a supporter, and it seems like half of Williamsburg. What do you make of that? I can’t speak to that. All I know is that there’s a bar next to my office in Brooklyn called Fancy Free, which is the unofficial official headquarters of the supporters of Arsenal. We’ll be there packed in tomorrow for this, hopefully, demolition of PSG! [Unfortunately, Paris …

The longest streak of seasons with a different champion in NBA history extended Saturday when the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder were ousted in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals by San Antonio, 111–103. Victor Wembanyama had a team-high 22 points and seven rebounds in the win for San Antonio, which will now face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. It’s a rematch from 27 years ago, when these teams met in the 1999 Finals won by San Antonio and its twin-tower duo of David Robinson and Tim Duncan, both former No. 1 overall draft picks. This time around, the Spurs are led by another enormously talented big man in 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama, the sensational former No. 1 pick who has led his team to the Finals in his third NBA season, and only his first postseason appearance. Saturday’s Game 7 was only Wembanyama’s 18th …

How NBA playoff teams embrace faith on the court

How NBA playoff teams embrace faith on the court

(RNS) — Just before the tip-off of a May 18 playoff game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs, Pastor Danny Grover stood in a spotlight at center court holding a microphone. “Strong and faithful God,” the pastor of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Elk City, Oklahoma, began, “as we come together for this contest, we ask you to bless these athletes. Keep them safe from injury and harm. Instill in them respect for each other and reward them for their perseverance.” Then Grover asked God to be with the fans, too: “Help us to cheer on our teams with dignity. Lead us all to the rewards of your kingdom.” As he concluded his prayer, the crowd of more than 18,000 at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City responded with amens and cheers. The Thunder ended up losing the game in double overtime. But win or lose, Grover said he relishes the opportunity to deliver the invocation, which he has been doing about once a year for the past eight years for the NBA …

Spurs-Thunder Will Be Record-Tying 5th Game 7 in the NBA So Far in These Playoffs

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — It is the year of Game 7. For the fifth time in this year’s playoffs, a series is coming down to the ultimate game. San Antonio will visit Oklahoma City on Saturday night in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. The others this season: Philadelphia beat Boston on the road in Round 1, Cleveland beat Toronto in Round 1, Detroit beat Orlando in Round 1 and Cleveland beat Detroit on the road in Round 2. The five Game 7s this season tie the most in a single postseason. There also were that many in 1994, 2014 and 2016. And there have never been three instances of Game 7 road winners in the same season; the Spurs will aim to change that on Saturday. Home teams have gone 117-42 in the previous 159 instances of Game 7s in the NBA playoffs. A look at the histories in Game 7 for Oklahoma City and San Antonio, two franchises that have never before gone head-to-head in such a game: — Thunder, since moving …

Marves Fairley pleads guilty as NBA betting probe widens

Marves Fairley pleaded guilty Thursday (May 28) in federal court in Brooklyn, a major development in the widening sports betting investigation that has drawn in gamblers, intermediaries and former NBA figures. During a change-of-plea hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph A. Marutollo, Fairley entered guilty pleas to two counts in the NBA case and five counts in a separate suit, including sports bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. In the latter case, he admitted to placing wagers and recruiting and bribing college basketball players to underperform in games in a separate NCAA point-shaving case brought by federal prosecutors in Pennsylvania. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Berman appeared for the government, while Eric Siegle represented Fairley. The NBA Finals are a reward for long-suffering Knicks fans — and this broadcaster

When the NBA Finals tip off Wednesday, there will almost certainly be a who’s who of long-suffering fans in attendance who have waited an agonizing 27 years to see the New York Knicks back on basketball’s biggest stage. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. One of them will even be in the broadcast booth. ESPN’s Mike Breen will be the play-by-play man for his record-extending 21st straight NBA Finals this year. And for the first time, the New York native will be calling the team he grew up rooting for in the championship round. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say there are emotions,” Breen acknowledged to NBC News this week. In addition to his work for ESPN, Breen has called Knicks games locally for over 30 years. He began as the team’s radio announcer in 1991, and after a brief stint as the lead play-by-play man later that decade, he took over the position for good in 2004. “It’s not just that I was a …

NBA Player Terry Rozier Hit With New Bribery Charges in Sports Gambling Sting

NBA Player Terry Rozier Hit With New Bribery Charges in Sports Gambling Sting

Federal prosecutors have indicted ex-Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier on additional charges in connection with a sports gambling sting, alleging he took a hefty bribe to exit a game early in March 2023. Rozier, 32, was charged Thursday in a superseding indictment in Brooklyn federal court with bribery in sporting contests and honest services wire fraud conspiracy. Superseding indictments are used when prosecutors want to change or add new charges to an existing criminal case. Rozier has denied participating in the gambling scheme, and has been fighting to have the case dismissed after pleading not guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy charges in December. His attorneys argue in part that the government’s theory of the case — that he prevented sportsbooks from making informed decisions about accepting certain bets — runs afoul of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the federal wire fraud statute. The new indictment “just confirms that our motion to dismiss was righteous — new charges, new theories, but all just an effort to make something stick,” …
