NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs Get Into Micro-comedy, Really

NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs Get Into Micro-comedy, Really

The vertical video gold rush has pulled in one of the biggest players in traditional media — the NFL. Or at least, one of its marquee franchises. The Kansas City Chiefs are diving into the micro-series realm with a comedy called El Offseason. The Spanish-language show will follow the misadventures of four (fictional) team employees whose offseason months spiral into chaos. The team says the nine-episode series will combine elements of sketch comedy with the wild plot twists of a telenovela. El Offseason is set to premiere June 12 in the United States, Mexico and Spain. As part of the NFL’s global markets program, the Chiefs have marketing rights in the latter two countries (along with several other franchises), hence the Spanish-language effort. A trailer for the series is below. “This is exactly the kind of storytelling opportunity the offseason creates,” said Lauren Denowitz, vp brand marketing and fan engagement for the team. “When the games stop, the connection matters even more. El Offseason lets us show up for our fans in a way that feels …

0,000 homes go to winners of NFL draft-style lottery

$500,000 homes go to winners of NFL draft-style lottery

In one Chicago suburb, a shot at the American dream looks something like this: balloons, fanfare and an NFL Draft-style raffle, with the 20 chosen ones given five minutes to pick a house priced at roughly $500,000 each. It’s the brainchild of Craig Johnson, mayor of Illinois’ Elk Grove Village. If approved by the town’s board in June, it would be the first new residential subdivision there in more than 20 years. Lately, the town has been known more for houses demolished in favor of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Stream Data Centers bought — and then promptly tore down — an entire 55-home subdivision about two years ago to build a trio of data centers. Just this week, a borrower known as Elk Grove Village Property LLC is marketing $900 million of junk bonds to build a facility tied to CoreWeave Inc. It’s a clash of two of the most dominant trends in real estate: the need for more housing in the face of a supply shortage that’s left many Americans unable to afford homes, and …

Column: Who would dream of letting the NFL judge its own racism?

Column: Who would dream of letting the NFL judge its own racism?

Just one of the nine Supreme Court justices thought it was appropriate for Roger Goodell — whose primary job as NFL commissioner is to protect the league — to decide whether the NFL’s hiring practices are still racist. And it happens to be the same justice whose close friend is an NFL owner. In fact, the friendship between Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill dates back decades, to high school. So when President Trump nominated Kavanaugh for the highest court in the land, Bidwill used the team’s official website to advocate for his confirmation. Not sure how the “stick to sports” crowd feels about it, considering how they react when players express opinions, but it felt like an overreach to me. Obviously when a decision related to NFL owners came before the court, Kavanaugh should have recused himself. But by now we’re used to justices ignoring their own ethics rules. What I find most disturbing in this instance is Kavanaugh’s dissent. Here’s how the hiring discrimination case came to be: Former New …

NFL Owners Approve Playing up to 10 International Games Beyond 2026 Season

NFL Owners Approve Playing up to 10 International Games Beyond 2026 Season

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The NFL will be playing more games overseas. NFL owners on Tuesday approved an increase to 10 international games beyond this upcoming season. That’s the maximum number of games the league can play outside the United States per the collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said 16 international games is the goal. There will be a record nine international games this season across four continents, including the first regular-season games in France and Australia. Rio de Janeiro will be a first-time host, there will be three games in London, one in Munich, one in Spain and one in Mexico City. “Our strategy is not one and done so our goal is to go back to those markets that we’re establishing,” NFL executive Peter O’Reilly said. “There are parts of the world that we are looking at for future years, maybe not ’27, beyond. Asia would be an example of that. Japan would be a good example within Asia of a market that has complexity.” …

In March, Vrabel, 50, and Russini, 43 — both married to other people — were pictured holding hands and hugging at a luxury resort in Arizona. In the weeks since the initial photos were published, additional images of Russini and Vrabel, captured over the past few years, have resurfaced. While Vrabel has issued an apology for his behavior (without addressing the nature of the relationship), Russini has stayed silent following her resignation from The Athletic. The Chargers have referenced the headline-making drama in the team’s 2026 schedule release video, which …

Pegula Putting Family Experience in NFL and NHL to Use in Tennis Prize Money Protest

Pegula Putting Family Experience in NFL and NHL to Use in Tennis Prize Money Protest

Behind the scenes, it’s been Jessica Pegula, the 2024 U.S. Open runner-up, organizing the top tennis players in their protest with the Grand Slams over the share of tournament revenues devoted to prize money. It comes naturally to Pegula, who grew up in a household of sports managers: Her parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. “I think it maybe does (come naturally) just because I feel like I’ve taken on a bit of a leadership role with it,” Pegula said. Already this year, No. 5-ranked Pegula was named to lead a new 13-person panel to suggest changes to the women’s tennis calendar, rankings points rules and the requirements about competing in certain events. Now she’s taking on the prize money issue, too. “I’m not afraid to go up to any type of player and go like, ‘Hey, are you interested in this or not?’” Pegula said. “Some players, they don’t care, sometimes they’re not worried about it. Sometimes they’re like, ’Yeah, for sure, I’m 100% in.’ I’ve been reaching out …

Roger Goodell Is Renegotiating NFL Rights With All the Media Players—And Everyone Thinks He’ll Win Big

Roger Goodell Is Renegotiating NFL Rights With All the Media Players—And Everyone Thinks He’ll Win Big

From NFL headquarters in New York, Goodell tells me that it was 10 years of conversations with Amazon (and team owners) before the streamer landed its Thursday-night package. That package had previously been held by Fox, CBS, and NBC, who all opted not to pursue it because they had strength in their Sunday packages. “I think streamers bring innovation, they bring technology,” Goodell says. “They bring an important platform. From YouTube we’ve learned a lot. The importance of creators and influencers, how they’ve done that. They took over Sunday Ticket, which is a package that we thought could have a lot more innovation, and they’ve done an amazing job with it.” Goodell, who has not visited Australia before, will make three trips in six months Down Under ahead of the first-ever game in Melbourne between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers in September. When he isn’t negotiating deals and at games, he finds solace in his “man cave” at his New York home. “Everyone got a look at my man cave back …
