US aircraft carrier hit by mysterious fire as Iran chaos escalates | US | News

Three sailors sustained injuries following a fire aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) while it was undergoing a maintenance period at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. A Navy spokesperson confirmed to USNI News that a small fire had broken out on board the carrier. The spokesperson told the outlet that the sailors were treated by the ship’s medical team and have since returned to full duty. “On April 14, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower experienced a small fire that was immediately contained and extinguished by ship’s force and Norfolk Navy Shipyard personnel, who responded swiftly as trained. “Three Sailors were treated by ship’s medical and returned to full duty,” the Navy spokesperson told USNI News. The aircraft carrier has been docked at the Navy’s publicly operated Virginia-based shipyard for 16 months. This comes after two sailors were injured when a fire broke out aboard the USS Gerald Ford, an aircraft carrier deployed to the Iran war. The U.S. military confirmed that the carrier suffered a non-combat-related fire in the ship’s main laundry area. …

Beach hut row erupts in UK village as council rips up leases | UK | News

Furious beach hut owners have been given a “devastating” ultimatum in the latest saga of their battle with local authorities. Owners of the wooden structures on North Beach in Heacham, Norfolk, received letters this week saying their 10-year leases would be replaced by annual “licenses”. They were told they must accept the new terms, due to be enforced from next month, or either remove their huts or surrender them to West Norfolk Council. The local authority sparked backlash when it announced plans to sell the land beneath the 105 beach huts last year, eventually backing down after an outcry led by the hut owners. Antonia Hayes, who has owned a beach hut on the stretch for six years, said the council’s latest move would force her into a “devastating legal downgrade”. “A lease is a legal interest in land,” she told the Eastern Daily Press. “It gives us a security of tenure and makes it difficult and expensive for a landlord to evict us without good reason. “A license is merely permission to be there. …

Saunas, safaris and silence in Norfolk: a winter weekend on a rewilded retreat | Suffolk holidays

Saunas, safaris and silence in Norfolk: a winter weekend on a rewilded retreat | Suffolk holidays

The scene is entirely black, white, grey and silver. It is cold, unusually dark and a film of ice is forming on the lake. I’m sitting in an unlit wooden sauna, alone, in immense silence. The only noise is the soft ticking of the stove as the heat rises. Across the water are ghostly silver birches and dark pines. Above them, Orion’s Belt shines bright. This vivid experience feels like midwinter in Canada, Finland or anywhere else about 60 degrees north. So it’s bizarre to know I’m a few miles south-west of Great Yarmouth. Fritton Lake is an anomaly. Like the Broads to the north, this deceptively big, sinuous lake was largely created by medieval peat-digging, but it’s nothing like its Norfolk cousins. Set in a sandy, hilly landscape of heaths and pines, the northernmost outpost of the wildlife-rich strip of sandy heathlands running up the Suffolk coast, the lake is deep and two miles long but so hidden by trees that many people don’t know of its existence. Over the past five years, Fritton …

Struggling crab company blames offshore wind farms for ‘dramatic downturn’ in supply | UK | News

A struggling crab company has blamed offshore wind farms for a “dramatic downturn” in supply. Jonas Seafood, which produces dressed Cromer crab, said its seasonal catch fell by nearly a quarter in 2025. The company, based in the Norfolk coastal town, is warning its year-round operation has now been put at risk, according to reports. Managing director Kevin Jonas has called for the company to receive compensation for the alleged impact of offshore wind farms. He said Jonas Seafood experienced a “drop off” in crab supply 17 years ago when the area’s first major offshore wind farm was built. Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Mr Jonas said this was seen again during the construction of other nearby wind farms years later. He told the broadcaster: “When the operation is finished we plotted an upturn in supply once more. “In this past year, there have been cables coming in from, I think, Hornsea Three, and we’ve seen a drop off again, so it’s pretty difficult to argue against.” He said he also believes prime spots for …
