Photograph: Julia Forbes Like any Sleep Number smart bed, the ComfortNext Lux offers 100 firmness levels, and the one you select is your “Sleep Number,” or the firmness you prefer to sleep on. I usually skew toward firmer for lumbar support and weight distribution, which has previously been in the 40 to 50 range. Then, a new recommendation popped up in the app—my firmness level was in the mid-70s, but going softer could improve my sleep score, which Sleep Number calls its “SleepIQ score” and reports in its app. I decided to lower it to a much softer firmness level of 35. The SleepIQ score summarizes your nightly sleep metrics, including heart rate variability, breathing rate, and time spent in each sleep stage. This data is compiled into a score that summarizes your sleep quality. The app’s score always skewed lower than what my Apple Watch SE would track. A good first step for plus-size sleepers is to look for a hybrid mattress with a taller height. Over the years, I’ve found that a mattress height of 12 inches or more is a good indicator that it’s designed to support larger bodies. Too often, heavier sleepers may find themselves sinking too deeply into the mattress because the materials aren’t firm enough. The mattress can’t push back enough to keep the sleeper hovering atop it, so the sleeper bottoms out and hits the support core of innerspring coils or firm foam. They get none of the benefits of the top layers and generally feel unsupported, which manifests as back pain or achy joints. At 15.5 inches tall, the Saatva HD can’t relate. It’s one of the more heavy-duty hybrid mattresses I’ve come across. Its seven-layer build is true to its “heavy duty” name, with both sides rated to support 500 pounds. A technical glitch meant that customers were overcharged when shopping with one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains. UK customers were incorrectly charged for their online grocery shopping earlier this week as Sainsbury’s suffered a technical error. The glitch meant that Sainsbury’s Nectar Card prices were not applied, meaning that Nectar card holders didn’t get the lower prices they are promised. Instead, they would have paid full price. Sainsbury’s said it is contacting all affected customers about this mistake. Customers can check their online receipts to see if they have been charged incorrectly for their online grocery shopping. Sainsbury’s said the glitch occurred overnight on Tuesday. “We are sorry that a brief technical glitch overnight on Tuesday meant Nectar Prices didn’t apply correctly on some of Wednesday’s online orders,” a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said. “The issue was resolved quickly, and we are contacting all affected customers to ensure they are not left out of pocket.” Customers have shared their complaints about the issue online. This mattress pad offers a bit of cushion with a quilted surface, but not nearly as much as the mattress topper. It’s meant to be more of a deluxe mattress protector than anything. But for athletes competing who may find their mattress agreeable but want some extra padding, they could easily forgo the topper and use the pad instead. Otherwise, you can throw it on top of the mattress topper, but that is a bit too much cushion for me and can stretch the elastic sides, depending on your mattress’s height.
