Picture: Shutterstock/Tada Images The company behind ChatGPT has no plans to share advertising revenue with publishers, OpenAI’s vice president of media partnerships has confirmed. Varun Shetty was asked at the WAN-IFRA World News Media Congress in Marseille on Tuesday whether they are considering a revenue share model on publisher content being surfaced next to adverts, which are being trialled on ChatGPT. Shetty responded: “Not at this point.” [Read more: New York Times chief: How and why publishers should fight AI ‘tsunami’] ChatGPT rival search tool Perplexity began sharing ad revenue with publishers in late 2024 but has since removed advertising from its platform over concerns this can impact trust. Prorata AI has said it will share 50% of advertising revenue generated with the publishers whose content appears in the AI answers alongside it. Shetty also told publishers he did not see traffic as the “core value” for publishers appearing within ChatGPT search, a feature within the AI …

Flush With Cash From OpenAI, Opal Is Making an AI-Powered Audio Gadget

A small San Francisco startup known for making well-appointed, beautifully designed webcams is now vying to become the AI hardware company of the moment. Opal Camera is rebranding to Opal Electronics and will expand its product portfolio beyond webcams to a broad range of consumer devices, some of which will be AI-focused. It aims to emulate Sony Electronics as a wide-ranging consumer gadget brand by focusing on design and culture, not just tech. The transition was possible thanks to a $40 million Series B funding round from OpenAI. Some details about the investment were first reported in 2024, but the deal was closed in the first quarter of 2025. Other investors in Opal include Samsung, Peter Thiel, Seven Seven Six (Alexis Ohanian’s venture capital firm), and noted tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee (known as MKBHD), among others, according to a source close to the deal. Opal is now valued at around $275 million. Opal Electronics declined to comment. OpenAI did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was an early customer and …

Florida sues OpenAI, Sam Altman, in first-of-its-kind lawsuit over violent incidents

Florida sues OpenAI, Sam Altman, in first-of-its-kind lawsuit over violent incidents

OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, were sued by the Florida attorney general on Monday, in a first-of-its-kind state litigation effort over ChatGPT’s alleged links to a number of violent incidents. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of looking the other way on safety concerns as it has sought to prioritize winning “the AI arms race and amass large fortunes.” “Today, we announced the first-in-the-nation state-led lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman,” said Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier. “OpenAI and Altman ignored internal and external safety warnings, put children at great risk, and allowed a dangerous product to reach millions of Floridians.” “Because of Defendants’ misrepresentations about ChatGPT and their careless introduction of ChatGPT to Florida and the world, mass shooters have been aided and abetted in deadly rampages, vulnerable people have been encouraged into suicide, professionals have suffered public humiliation, users have lost critical thinking skills, and minors have become addicted to a tool that feigns human compassion to collect their data with no parental oversight,” the 83-page lawsuit claims. The Florida attorney general’s office launched …

Florida sues OpenAI, Sam Altman, saying they put profit over safety

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Monday, accusing the company of putting profit over safety, fueling violence and pushing a product it knew could harm users. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. “The rise of OpenAI is attributable to a web of deceit and the exploitation of users (including Floridians), leveraging their data and safety to boost OpenAI’s market value at unacceptable costs,” the complaint reviewed by NBC News and filed Monday said. Florida is the first state to sue OpenAI and Altman over design and safety. The civil action, seeking penalties and a court order rather than criminal charges, said Uthmeier “seeks to hold Altman personally liable for the harm he has caused Floridians through his reckless and willful conduct as founder and CEO of OpenAI, including his utter disregard for the risk to human life caused by his firms’ conduct.” The action is separate from a criminal investigation into OpenAI that Uthmeier opened in late April, which remains …

Everything We Know About OpenAI’s Planned iPhone Rival

Everything We Know About OpenAI’s Planned iPhone Rival

OpenAI is developing a smartphone intended to compete directly with the iPhone, in what appears to be a significant departure from the company’s previously stated hardware strategy. Here’s everything we know so far. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published his findings in late April following supply chain checks, describing the device as an “AI agent phone” built around a continuous, context-aware interface rather than individual apps. Kuo argued that the smartphone is the only device that captures a user’s full real-time state, including location, activity, communication, and context, making it uniquely suited to AI agent inference. He said fully controlling both the operating system and the hardware is the only way for OpenAI to deliver a comprehensive AI agent service, and that AI agents will fundamentally shift how people interact with a phone, moving the focus from launching individual apps to completing tasks through a seamless interface. Specifications OpenAI’s phone is said to use a customized version of MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 processor, built on TSMC’s N2P node in the second half of 2026. Kuo initially named both …

Mistral AI launches Vibe, expands into industrial AI and announces data center push to challenge OpenAI

Mistral AI used its inaugural conference on Wednesday to announce a sweeping expansion into industrial manufacturing, a new inference data center south of Paris, and a rebranding of its consumer-facing assistant — moves that collectively signal the three-year-old French startup’s ambition to become the enterprise AI provider of record for companies that refuse to hand their most sensitive data to American hyperscalers. At the AI NOW Summit, held at a venue in central Paris, co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch took the stage alongside CTO Timothée Lacroix and Chief Scientist Guillaume Lample to lay out a strategy that stretches from bare-metal GPU clusters to physics simulations for aircraft wings. The company disclosed that it now employs 1,000 people and is targeting €1 billion ($1.17B USD) in revenue for 2026 — a figure that, if achieved, would be an extraordinary growth trajectory for a company that began with 15 employees collaborating with its first customer, BNP Paribas, in 2023. “We have two convictions at Mistral,” Mensch told the audience. “The first is that in order to deploy …

Illinois Lawmakers Just Passed America’s Strongest AI Safety Bill

Illinois Lawmakers Just Passed America’s Strongest AI Safety Bill

The Illinois House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday requiring frontier AI labs like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind to have their safety practices audited by a third party. If signed into law, AI safety experts tell WIRED, it would be the nation’s leading check on the power of major AI companies. The bill, SB 315, now heads to governor JB Pritzker’s desk. In a post on social media on Wednesday, Pritzker said he plans to sign the bill, citing a need to hold Big Tech accountable. Since Congress has yet to pass any meaningful AI safety legislation, state lawmakers have happily stepped up in recent years to promote bills that show their constituents they’re keeping Silicon Valley in check. As AI tools become increasingly popular, and the companies behind them race toward massive IPOs, polls show that American voters are looking for more AI regulation. As a result, safety advocates and tech companies have zeroed in on state legislatures as the primary battleground to hash out how these laws should look. OpenAI’s chief …
