How campaigners beat industrial farming in Denmark’s ‘pig election’ | Animal welfare

Like all new prime ministers, when Mette Frederiksen secured a third consecutive term as Denmark’s head of government this week, she promised her administration would take steps to “improve the everyday lives” of the country’s inhabitants. Unlike most new prime ministers, however, she specified that her left-leaning coalition’s policy programme would be not just for “the people who are in Denmark and the generations to come” but also “for the animals”. For the home of Danish bacon, an ultra-intensive farming country that produces about 30m piglets a year – against roughly 60,000 human babies – it was a huge moment: a Danish government, seeking existential reform of Denmark’s most iconic industry. It was also the culmination of two years of focused campaigning by animal welfare, environmentalist and residents’ groups that turned March’s ballot into what became known as “the pig election” – and won a comprehensive victory. “I hardly dare say it, but we got more than we asked for,” said Britta Riis, the head of Animal Protection Denmark, one of the primary actors in …

The pet I’ll never forget: Merlin the sassy pig, who helped me meet my husband | Pets

The pet I’ll never forget: Merlin the sassy pig, who helped me meet my husband | Pets

We have lots of animals in our home in Sacramento, California – a dog, two chicks, a pigeon, a bearded dragon, three rats and two rescue cows. But our pig, Merlin, is special. I had a pig obsession for a while. I remember going to visit some animal sanctuaries and getting emotional when I saw the pigs. There’s just something about them that I felt a connection to. I knew how smart they were. I remember telling myself that one day I’d have a pig. Merlin is a mini Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. He was cute as a button when I adopted him in March 2020, when he was just two and a half months old. He loves to cuddle but he can be a bit sassy. If he doesn’t get his way he likes to unplug devices and slam doors. He likes to wear a propeller cap and go on walks; it’s like having an 180lb toddler. We were living in an apartment when we adopted Merlin and I’m surprised we didn’t receive a noise …

Laurie’s Defecating Pig Starts Drug War With Rue in Season 3

Laurie’s Defecating Pig Starts Drug War With Rue in Season 3

[This story contains spoilers from the second episode of Euphoria season three.] Martha Kelly is as surprised watching Euphoria as the rest of us. The comedian and character actor, who received her first Emmy nomination for her menacingly deadpan turn as drug-dealer Laurie last season, came back this year for season three to wreak more havoc for Rue (Zendaya), even with the five-year time jump. This much Kelly knows: Laurie drew her former teenage hostage back into her web, “offering” to employ her to work off her debt, only for Rue to again escape — this time into the home of another drug lord, Laurie’s seeming rival Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). As for everything else happening in the show, though? “I don’t know a lot of what happens this season because I only saw my own scenes,” Kelly says.  Much about Euphoria has been a discovery for Kelly, who made her acting debut to wide acclaim in Zach Galifianakis’s Baskets. She came into the show intimidated by the caliber of talent and intensity of focus given to …

Get the latest entertainment news, reviews and star-studded interviews with our Independent Culture email Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Former Walt Disney Company CEO Michael Eisner has reflected on his storied career, describing his time working with Harvey Weinstein as the “hardest” part of his tenure. In a newly published interview with Graham Bensinger on his In Depth podcast, Eisner — who ran Disney from 1984 to 2005 — recalled the difficulties of dealing with the now-disgraced movie mogul, 73. “He lied about everything,” the ex-CEO, 83, claimed of Weinstein, who has since been imprisoned for a series of sex crimes. “How do you deal with somebody who never tells the truth?” Eisner added: “He was just a pig. He was rude, but he was a closet intellectual. He looked like a truck driver. He acted like a truck driver. He had great independent film taste and nobody at Disney would deal with him but me. “He couldn’t tell the …

Muslim Leaders In Italian City Demand Removal Of Plastic Pig From Deli Shop Window

Muslim Leaders In Italian City Demand Removal Of Plastic Pig From Deli Shop Window

Via Remix News, A plastic pig displayed in the window of a newly opened delicatessen on the Piazza dei Signori in the Italian city of Padua has triggered a local controversy after a senior representative of the city’s Muslim community called for its removal, arguing that it is offensive and inappropriate. The pig, placed in the window of the deli Mortadella… e Non Solo, is used to advertise the shop’s sandwiches and cured meats, which are primarily made from pork. According to Il Giornale, Salim El Mauoed, the regional vice president of Padua’s Muslim community, urged both the shop’s owners and local authorities to intervene, describing the display as “in bad taste” and offensive to Muslims who pass through the area. There is no legal basis requiring the business to remove the display. The pig imagery is a central part of the shop’s branding and appears not only in the window but also in its logo, promotional materials, and merchandise shared publicly on social media. El Mauoed’s request has drawn criticism from some politicians and residents, …
