Trump breaks silence on ‘helping out’ major airline on brink of plunging into liquidation | World | News

Donald Trump commented on a major airline facing difficulties, suggesting he wouldn’t be against a merger or even seeing the federal government helping it out. The US President said the government could help Spirits Airlines, which is struggling and facing liquidation. Speaking to CNBC’s, Mr Trump said: “I don’t mind mergers. I think I’d love somebody to buy Spirit, as an example. You know, Spirit’s in trouble. … Maybe the federal government should help that one out.” Spirit has already sought government aid from Mr Trump administration in recent days, according to people familiar with the matter, as reported by CNBC, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is planning to meet with several discount carriers to discuss the impact higher fuel is having on airlines. Jet fuel costs, skyrocketing after the war in Iran, played a part in the difficulties recently experienced by Spirit Airlines too. Quoting JPMorgan, CNBC said that if fuel stays at about $4.60 a gallon this year, Spirit’s forecast operating margin for the 2026 fiscal year would range from negative 7 per …

High street giant reopens online store after plunging into administration – shops closed | UK | News

A major high street brand has reopened its online stores after plunging into administration and closing all high street shops. Malin + Goetz, which filed for administration in the UK in January, announced it would be closing its seven London stores “immediately”. The skincare and fragrance company also paused all its online orders. Now, in a dramatic turnaround, the company has sent an email to customers announcing that its online store has reopened. It read: “We missed you. We’re now accepting orders. Be the first to shop before we officially go live. Thank you for your patience while we’ve been on pause.” Now, the online store does appear to be taking orders again. Malin + Goetz had stores in Spitalfields, Canary Wharf, Seven Dials, Soho, Islington, Battersea Power Station, and Borough Yards. In just over 20 years, the company grew to have stores in California and Hong Kong, open up flagship stores in the UK in 2022, and became established as a premium beauty brand. The company also worked with third-party retailers, such as John …

The Longevity Bros Are Cold Plunging Wrong

Cold-water bathing has a long history as a health hack. The ancient Greeks and Romans partook to treat fevers. Eighteenth-century mental institutions employed a tactic called the bain de surprise, suddenly dunking their patients in cold water to jolt them out of their depression or psychosis. (Some doctors aimed to wet only the head to cure “hot brain.”) Last year, Mehmet Oz, the celebrity doctor who is now the head of Medicaid and Medicare, posted an Instagram video of himself in a one-man ice bath, promoting it as a possible boon for immunity and longevity. “Maybe you affect how the mitochondria work,” he says, before dunking his head into the bath and then flipping his hair as “Careless Whisper” plays in the background. Maybe. Certainly the plunge has a bit of logic behind it. Cold exposure dampens inflammation, which can contribute to a person’s risk of heart disease and cancer. In nature, some very long-lived animals, such as the bowhead whale (lifespan: about 200 years) and the Greenland shark (500 years) basically cold plunge for …

Plunging Google Discover traffic hits Reach digital revenue

Three screenshots depicting Reach plc stories on Google Discover on desktop in late 2024 (before AI summaries started to be added). Major cost cuts at Reach helped keep profits up in 2025 despite falling revenue across both digital and print. Page views fell by 8% in the second half of the year as Google Discover referral traffic plummeted by almost 50%. The UK’s largest commercial news publisher reported adjusted operating profit of £104.7m, up 2.4% compared to 2024. Revenue was down 3.7% or £20.2m to £518.4m. Adjusted operating costs were down by 5.2% or £22.7m to £416.4m, offsetting the revenue decline. Headcount across Reach was down 4% compared to a year earlier from 3,579 to 3,423. Labour costs were down £3.5% or by £208.5m. In September Reach announced plans to cut its editorial headcount by 186 via 321 redundancies and 135 new roles including many in video (although Press Gazette understands the final reduction was less than planned). Earlier in the summer around 50 redundancies were made as a central sports team was created. So …

Popular UK retailer plunging into administration – website closed down | UK | News

Online beauty retailer Beauty Bay is teetering on the edge of administration after submitting a notice of intention to appoint administrators. This indicates a firm is gearing up to enter administration and grants a brief legal protection preventing creditors from pursuing legal proceedings for ten days. Sky News reports that the notice was lodged on Tuesday this week. Beauty Bay has also shut down its website, displaying the following statement on its homepage: “We’ll Be Back Soon. BEAUTY BAY is offline right now. We’ll be back shortly.” Beauty Bay was established in 1999 by brothers Arron and David Gabbie and operates from Manchester. It stocks over 200 brands through its platform, including Ariana Grande, Clinique and MAC, alongside its own product range. This follows earlier reports suggesting Beauty Bay was examining possibilities to secure fresh investment, potentially including a complete sale of the enterprise. Russian economy meltdown as companies plunging into bankruptcy – £68bn losses | World | News

Russia’s economy continues to be hammered by the war in Ukraine as an increasing number of companies report losses. Total losses of Russian companies by 25% in just nine months last year, reaching a whopping 6.52 trillion rubles (£68 billion), according to the federal statistics service. Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, who oversees housing and infrastructure in the government, warned that soon over 30% of Russian property developers could be pushed to the brink if financial conditions do not improve in the next six months. He told Vedomosti Business Daily: “By my estimate, about 20% of developers face serious risks.” He noted that while every fifth construction company has postponed project completion by at least six months, this alone is not a reliable indicator of impending bankruptcy. SC Donstroy in the city of Rostov-on-Don collapsed into bankruptcy after accumulating a debt of 11 million rubles (£105,000). Meanwhile, construction company LLC “STEK” was declared bankrupt last year with debts of 39 million rubles (£373,000). Stroyproekt Group was also reported to be on the verge of bankruptcy, …

Wall Street Bounces Back as Tech Stocks Recover and Bitcoin Stops Plunging

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is bouncing back from big losses taken earlier in the week, as technology stocks recover some of their losses on Friday and bitcoin halts its plunge, at least for now. The S&P 500 rose 0.9% and was heading for just its second gain in the last eight days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 776 points, or 1.6%, as of 10:15 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.5% higher. Chip companies helped drive the gains, and Nvidia rallied 4.9% to trim its loss for the week, which came into the day at just over 10%. Broadcom climbed 3.8% to eat into its drop for the week of 6.3%. They were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500, and they benefited from hopes for big spending on chips by companies to drive their forays into artificial-intelligence technology. Amazon, for example, said late Thursday it expects to spend about $200 billion on investments this year to take advantage of “seminal opportunities like AI, chips, robotics, and low …
