The loved ones of a mum in a coma in the Canary Islands have urged her to wake up so she can get back home to her children. Emily Casey, 34 and of Rock Ferry, was taken ill just three days after she had flown out to Gran Canaria with her husband Jamie Casey and their five children. Emily, who had recently recovered from pneumonia, had struggled to breathe and was rushed to hospital where an emergency CT scan was done. They were told the pneumonia had returned and one of her lungs was “full of fluid”, which would need to be drained. Jamie returned to the family’s hotel with the children, but when he returned to hospital the following day he devastatingly found his wife was in an induced coma on a life support machine. After taking the children back to England he returned to the Spanish island but was told on Saturday how his wife’s progress had “gone backwards”. Dakota Hunter, vice president of Kyle Busch Companies, said in a news release the family received the medical evaluation on Saturday. Busch, a two-time NASCAR champion, died at 41 on Thursday, a day after passing out in a Chevrolet simulator. Sepsis is considered a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body has an extreme, overactive response to an infection, causing the immune system to damage its own tissues and organs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Typically the immune system releases chemicals to fight off pathogens like bacteria, viruses or fungi, but with sepsis the response goes into overdrive. SINGAPORE: An 88-year-old Singaporean man who was serving a 15-year jail term for hacking his partner to death died in December 2025 of pneumonia. A coroner’s court on Tuesday (May 12) found that Mr Pak Kian Huat had died of a natural disease process, with no evidence of foul play. He had also been afforded the appropriate medical care at Changi Prison’s Complex Medical Centre and Changi General Hospital, said State Coroner Adam Nakhoda. The court heard that Mr Pak’s family members had become estranged from him after the incident in 2019, when he killed his domestic partner, Madam Lim Soi Moy. Madam Lim was 79 when she was hacked to death with a chopper in a Housing Board flat in Toa Payoh, after a dispute about her rooming arrangement with Mr Pak. The sentencing judge in May 2023 said Mr Pak’s attack was “deliberately and unspeakably vicious and brutal”. Many hospitalised patients don’t brush their teeth during their stay, probably for a variety of reasons. Some may have forgotten to bring a toothbrush, while others don’t think about it, feel unmotivated or are physically incapable of doing so. Medical staff often do not include routine oral hygiene care as part of their services to patients. But in the largest randomised controlled trial of its kind, patients equipped with a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental care advice in hospitals were 60 per cent less likely to develop a common form of hospital-acquired pneumonia, says Brett Mitchell at Avondale University in Australia. “This just really enforces the need for communication with patients about pneumonia risk, and the importance of oral care and brushing their teeth whilst in hospital,” he says. Imax says CEO Richard Gelfond is taking a temporary medical leave to undergo treatment for pneumonia. “He is receiving outstanding care and progressing in his recovery,” the film technologies company said in a statement on Monday. During his recovery, Gelfond, who has led the company since 2009 after first joining as co-CEO in 1993, will be absent from private or private events at Imax. In his place, Imax senior execs, led by CFO Natasha Fernandes, will oversee day-to-day responsibilities alongside board chairman Darren Throop. “Imax is issuing this statement to provide transparency and ensure that there is no speculation arising out of Mr. Gelfond not appearing at the company’s upcoming events, including next week’s industry conferences,” the company added. SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro will continue to serve his 27-year sentence for a coup attempt at home instead of in prison due to failing health, a judge ruled Tuesday. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes allowed the 71-year-old to return to his residence in capital Brasilia after he is discharged from the hospital, but he argued in his decision that he will review the case within 90 days. Bolsonaro will wear an ankle monitor and is not allowed to use cellphones, the judge ruled. Local police will surveil his house in a gated community, where protesters are not allowed to gather. Bolsonaro is not allowed any visitors except for doctors and family members. The embattled leader has been hospitalized since March 13 for pneumonia, one of several health problems he has faced since he was stabbed by a man in 2018 before he was elected president.
