Karen Bass, Xavier Becerra top L.A. mayor, California governor poll

Karen Bass, Xavier Becerra top L.A. mayor, California governor poll

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass continues to hold the lead among likely voters in her bid for reelection, but not by a big enough margin to avoid a likely runoff with either Spencer Pratt or Nithya Raman, who are battling for second position, a new poll found. The same poll found Democrat Xavier Becerra continuing his surge in the race for California governor, emerging as a front-runner, with Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer and Republican commentator Steve Hilton vying for the second spot in a tight primary election. The latest poll comes just three weeks before the June 2 primary and offers new insights into two pivotal races that have been marked by twists and uncertainty. In the governor’s race, Democrats have been struggling for months to find a front-runner in the large pool of candidates. With support for the Democratic candidates split among their party’s electorate, Hilton — who is backed by President Trump — has emerged as one of the strongest candidates. But in the weeks since former Rep. Eric Swalwell exited the race …

Reform set to unseat five Cabinet ministers, poll suggests

Reform UK is on course to unseat five Cabinet ministers at the next election, as well as ousting Angela Rayner. Internal polling for Reform, seen by The Telegraph, shows the party on course to take 110 seats from Labour at the next election. Labour suffered an historic defeat in the local elections on May 8, losing 1,496 council seats across England and giving up power in the Welsh Senedd for the first time since devolution. It also lost former stronghold councils in the Red Wall of the North to a Reform surge. Reform’s polling shows five serving Cabinet ministers at risk of losing their seats to Reform at the next general election in 2029. Yvette Cooper, the Foreign Secretary, would be ousted in Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley, a seat she holds with a 17,089 majority, while Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, would lose her seat of Houghton and Sunderland South, which she has held since 2010. Pat McFadden, the Work and Pensions Secretary, would be ousted in Wolverhampton South East, a seat he has held …

POLL: Would Andy Burnham be a better PM than Keir Starmer? | Politics | News

Keir Stamer has insisted he won’t resign, despite terrible local election results in which Labour lost more than half the council seats it was defending. He is delivering a major speech today – and has said he hopes to remain Prime Minister for 10 more years. But many Labour MPs are determined to force him out. Backbencher Catherine West has said she will launch a leadership contest if nobody else does. There are many potential replacements for Sir Keir, but the candidate a lot of MPs are talking about is Andy Burnham, currently the mayor of Greater Manchester. Angela Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister, is calling for Mr Burnham to be allowed to return to the House of Commons as an MP – which would allow him to stand for the Labour leadership and, if he wins, become Prime Minister. The question for Labour is whether Mr Burnham would do a better job in Number 10 than Sir Keir. Would the country be better off if Mr Burnham took over? Do you believe Andy …

POLL: Should Labour MPs remove Keir Starmer after the local election? | Politics | News

Should Labour MPs remove Sir Keir Starmer after the local elections? Vote in our Daily Express poll as the embattled Prime Minister faces growing speculation over a potential leadership challenge. As he tries to stave off mounting unrest within his own party, Sir Keir was even reported to have been considering sacking his Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, in a desperate post-election reshuffle to re-establish his authority. Sir Keir has been battered by the Lord Mandelson scandal, with Opposition parties and some Labour MPs calling for him to step aside. He has been accused of misleading the House of Commons after he repeatedly told MPs that “due process was followed” in the appointment of Lord Mandelson as US ambassador. VOTE NOW: Should Labour MPs remove Sir Keir Starmer after the local elections? He even sacked the head of the foreign office, Sir Olly Robbins, for not informing him sooner that the former Labour peer had failed his security vetting. Labour insists it is campaigning on local issues, and Sir Keir is reportedly planning a “blitz” of policy …

Britain’s local elections are haunted by the Middle East – POLITICO

Britain’s local elections are haunted by the Middle East – POLITICO

“Lots of people feel very strongly, both about their local services as they should do and feel equally strongly about the fact that there’s a reprehensible genocide happening,” he said. The extra scrutiny facing the Greens in recent days does appear to be having an impact — and not in the direction Polanski wants. A YouGov poll published Wednesday of 2,377 British adults conducted on May 4 and 5 found 47 percent had an unfavorable view of Polanski — his worst rating since becoming leader, and up eight points from 39 percent in a previous poll on April 28 and 29. Just 22 percent had a favorable view. The pollster noted negativity towards the Green leader rose the most among voters who backed rival parties at the 2024 election, including the Lib Dems and the Tories. Sunder Katwala, director of the British Future think tank, said: “Green candidates who campaign on Gaza seek expressive support for issues that local councillors have limited influence over.” Muslim voters concerned about Gaza are not one monolithic group but …

Quitting ECHR would group Britain with Russia, rights chief warns – POLITICO

“And I think this was the wrong start. In which country would we accept that? Someone creating really a brutal pressure on a court? We would say, no, you need to discuss this at the political level. My goal was to bring this back to Strasbourg and to address this at the political level.” Not our role Berset also warned that reforming the convention would not solve countries’ own internal debates on migration. “Is this able to bring an answer to the concerns and challenges that the U.K. is facing in the migration discussions? I think yes, partly. When we see that there are concerns, they must be better addressed. But it will never be able to solve the internal discussion on migration. … But it’s not our role to have a direct impact on that,” he said. Berset noted that most U.K. migration cases invoking human rights do not actually end up at the European Court in Strasbourg, but are usually examples of British domestic courts interpreting the treaty’s rights on their own. British …

Former Olympic hammer thrower emerges as Italian left’s anti-Meloni – POLITICO

Salis’ most prominent initiatives as mayor have been progressive. Her first act was to register the births of 11 children born to lesbian couples abroad, blocked by her right-wing predecessor. She has opened a municipal office for LGBTQ+ rights and introduced a minimum wage for city contracts. She also backed pro-Palestinian causes. Winning the center But amid talk of a national role, she has increasingly shifted her politics toward the center, with a focus on mainstream issues surrounding health, labor, security and migration. The left, she argued, must focus on “pragmatic, concrete” issues. In a competitive contest on the left, Salis’ limited political experience could count against her, but she argued that she was adaptable. After all, she has taken control of one of Italy’s most important cities “by assembling a competent team and learning day by day, like anyone in a new job.” Experience, she argued, came in different forms. She pointed to the discipline of elite sport and her work within Italy’s Olympic system, where she dealt with ministries, international partners and major …

South Korea exports seen rising sharply again in April on chip boom: Reuters poll

South Korea exports seen rising sharply again in April on chip boom: Reuters poll

SEOUL, April 29 : South Korean exports likely rose in April for an 11th straight month, with a surge in chip demand driven by artificial intelligence investment more than offsetting a hit from the Middle East conflict, a Reuters poll showed on Wednesday. Import growth and consumer inflation were seen quickening due to high oil prices as the conflict in the Middle East has upended energy markets. Exports from Asia’s fourth-largest economy, a bellwether for global trade, were projected to have risen 45.3 per cent from a year earlier, according to a median forecast of 20 economists. That would be slightly weaker than the previous month’s increase of 49.2 per cent, which was the strongest year-on-year rise since August 1988, but still the second-fastest in the current gaining streak that started in June 2025. The trade-reliant economy delivered its strongest growth in nearly six years last quarter, smashing forecasts on booming chip exports, though rising risks from the Iran war threaten to cut into the record earnings. Last week, chipmaker SK Hynix announced a record …

New Poll Reveals Growing Concern About Mental Health

New Poll Reveals Growing Concern About Mental Health

Just seven years ago, polling revealed that 27 percent of a worldwide sample group viewed mental health as their biggest health concern. More recent polling by market research and consulting firm Ipsos shows that this number has jumped to 45 percent and now outpaces concerns about cancer, stress, obesity, and drug abuse. Fifty percent of U.S. respondents cited mental health as their top health concern. Many in the mental health field will attest to this, as we have seen our caseloads grow and demand for our services continue to increase. Common mental health challenges such as anxiety, stress, and depression have always been present, but how and why did such a serious increase occur, and what can be done to address this shocking reality? The upside of this significant increase in concern about mental health is that it indicates that people are thinking about it, paying attention to it, and actively assessing how they are coping, feeling, and responding to stressors. Mental health has become mainstream and is now widely recognized as an important part …
