ATTACKS RATTLE CEASEFIRE TALKS The duelling attacks reflect the fragility of a weeks-long ceasefire, which has seen repeated attacks even as American and Iranian officials try to negotiate a deal to extend it.  Iran has maintained its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz in the meantime, disrupting global energy supplies as a fifth of all oil and natural gas traded once passed through the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf. Over the weekend, the US fired a missile into the engine room of a Gambia-flagged cargo ship trying to break its blockade of Iranian ports . A trickle of ships have made it out of the strait, but pressure continues on global energy supplies, as well as chemical fertiliser which has led to fears of food shortages. The Gulf region produces 30 per cent of globally traded chemical fertilisers. POSSIBLE WEATHER RADAR ISSUES Investigators found that the radar could have been “under-painting” or “no-painting” – under-detecting or not detecting inclement weather altogether. A review of SIA’s Boeing 777 fleet maintenance records across around 29,000 flights found 12 cases of weather under-detection and 20 cases where weather was not detected at all. Among these, two cases of under-detected weather were recorded on SQ321 on Apr 29 and May 1, 2024, and a third – where weather went entirely undetected – was logged on May 15, six days before the incident. In all three cases, pilots reported no fault messages on the displays, and post-flight tests found no faults. The issue was not escalated to the manufacturer because SIA’s procedures then required escalation only when the same defect occurred on the same aircraft three times within 10 days – a threshold the three reports did not meet. Further evidence emerged after the incident, when pilots ferrying SQ321 from Bangkok back to Singapore on May 26 found that one of the radars was under-detecting weather. “The investigation …

Outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spent years blocking efforts to free cash for EPF reimbursements, and in the past France and Germany have raised objections on technical grounds as well. Kallas framed the cash boost as part of a broader effort to harden Moldova against Russian pressure. “Moldova remains caught in Russia’s hybrid war,” she said, pointing to attacks on energy infrastructure and repeated Russian drone incursions into Moldovan airspace. A new EU-funded radar system has already arrived in the country, she added, helping Moldova improve detection of Russian drones near its borders. The EPF proposal would significantly deepen the EU’s defense relationship with Chișinău. Ask a smattering of folks strolling down a major Manhattan thoroughfare to name the world’s top watch brands, and the same few marques would inevitably crop up: Rolex, Omega, TAG Heuer, Breitling… perhaps, for those in the know, Patek Philippe. But it speaks to the size and history of the watch industry that there are many more names—significant firms with rich histories and important innovations—that would inevitably be left off said list. Companies that, by virtue of restrained marketing, or the size of their annual output, or myriad other considerations, don’t quite get their due, even among watch enthusiasts. Take Girard-Perregaux, for example. With roots dating to the late 18th century, Girard-Perregaux (or GP, to those in the know) is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating watch companies.
