The 2026 GQ Sweater Report: Knits on Our Radar

The 2026 GQ Sweater Report: Knits on Our Radar

Sweaters seem simple enough, until you start paying attention. There’s the difference between a sweater you throw on without thinking and one you end up building an entire outfit around. And once you start pulling at that thread, it’s hard to stop. Which might explain why the GQ Recommends team spends a frankly alarming amount of time thinking about them, occasionally to an unraveling degree. All of which brings us to this loose collection of knitwear intel pulled from our desks, and, more importantly, our closets: outfits paying respect to a humble ’90s Abercrombie & Fitch relic, a nerdy breakdown of the fabrics that make sense across different temperatures, a vintage dealer’s ode to a grail-tier knit, and a handy matrix separating the freaky sweaters from the normie-coded staples. If you’re like us and always hunting for your next go-to knit, we’ve got a few leads. 3 small-batch sweater specialists we’re obsessed with Some brands dabble in knitwear. Others treat it like a full-time occupation. These three fall firmly in the latter camp. —Reed Nelson …

Greece sends warships, fighter jets to defend Cyprus after drone strike – POLITICO

Greece sends warships, fighter jets to defend Cyprus after drone strike – POLITICO

Akrotiri, located on a peninsula on the southern tip of Cyprus, southwest of the coastal city of Limassol, is one of the two bases Britain has maintained in its former colony since independence in 1960. It has been used in the past for military operations in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. The overnight strike, which caused limited damage and no casualties, came shortly after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he would allow the United States to use U.K. military bases to “destroy [Iranian] missiles at source.” After confirming the drone strike, Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides said in a televised address on Monday: “I want to be clear: Our country ‌does not participate in any way and does not intend to be part of any military operation.” Christodoulides briefed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the attack. Von der Leyen later stressed that Cyprus — and thus the EU — was not the intended target of the drone strike. “While the Republic of Cyprus was not the target, let me be clear: we …

Radar data reveals cavernous underground lava tube on Venus

Radar data reveals cavernous underground lava tube on Venus

WASHINGTON, Feb 9 : A fresh examination of radar data for Venus obtained by NASA’s Magellan spacecraft in the 1990s indicates the presence of a large underground cavity created by a lava flow, the first subsurface feature ever detected on Earth’s planetary neighbor. Researchers said the radar data was consistent with a geological feature called a lava tube that is found in certain volcanic locations on Earth. Lava tubes also exist on the moon and are thought to be present on Mars. Venus has carefully guarded its secrets, with its surface shrouded by thick noxious clouds. But radar can peer through these clouds. Scientists had theorized the presence of lava tubes on Venus, considering its history of volcanism. “Moving from theory to direct observation marks a major step forward, opening the door to new lines of research and providing crucial information for future missions aimed at exploring the planet,” said Lorenzo Bruzzone, a radar and planetary scientist at the University of Trento in Italy, senior author of the study published on Monday in the journal …

Princess Beatrice flies under the radar in frilly dress – and biker boots

Princess Beatrice has kept a relatively low profile so far this year, and on 23 January, she almost flew under royal fans’ radars as she headed out in Switzerland. The 37-year-old daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson was photographed during a meeting with H.E. Sheikh Dr Mohammed Alissa at the World Economic Forum.  As she sat speaking with the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL) and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars, the princess wore the ‘Textured Tailoring Midi Fit and Flare Dress’ by ME + EM, as identified by Royal British Fashion on Instagram.  © Instagram/Muslim World LeaguePrincess Beatrice spoke to H.E. Overhauling Air Traffic Control Involves 5,000 Locations And 600 Radar Systems: Here’s What To Know

Overhauling Air Traffic Control Involves 5,000 Locations And 600 Radar Systems: Here’s What To Know

Authored by Jacob Burg via The Epoch Times, The federal government is embarking on what Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has called “the most important infrastructure project that we’ve had in this country for decades.” It is attempting to modernize and upgrade the nation’s entire air traffic control system within a timeline of roughly three- and-a-half to four years. Multiple aviation experts, ranging from former pilots and controllers to professors and an aviation lawyer, say the changes are needed and long overdue. The entire project is projected to cost at least $32.5 billion, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with the initial $12.5 billion downpayment funded by President Donald Trump’s spending bill in July 2025. Duffy has asked Congress for an additional $20 billion to complete the project by the end of the president’s term. This is what the FAA has said it plans to do in this multi-year modernization project, which portions of the project experts say are most critical, some of the obstacles the federal government might face, and background on the company …

Radar ‘technical issue’ halts flights to Birmingham Airport | UK News

Radar ‘technical issue’ halts flights to Birmingham Airport | UK News

A power outage, caused by bad weather, at a National Air Traffic Service’s (NATS) radar site halted arrivals to Birmingham Airport overnight. Over 20 flights bound for the airport were cancelled, diverted or delayed – with several flights suffering delays of over four hours. The radar which serves Birmingham Airport was restored shortly before 1.30am on Monday. NATS apologised for the disruption and said it was working closely with the airport as it resumed its air traffic service. Engineers from NATS worked with National Grid to resolve the issue, with National Grid saying it responded “to a power cut in Shropshire”. Image: One KLM flight bound for Manchester had to divert back to Amsterdam after the radar issue. Pic: Flightradar24 The technical issue with the NATS radar that serves Birmingham Airport had meant that only departing flights were being allowed to operate. Birmingham Airport also apologised for the disruption. Multiple flights were diverted to East Midlands Airport and Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport – one flight from Amsterdam was airborne for almost an hour, only to …

‘Knitted’ satellite launching to monitor Earth’s surface with radar

An artist’s impression of CarbSAR orbiting Earth Oxford Space Systems A new UK satellite is about to launch, wearing the latest in high‑tech knitwear. Called CarbSAR, it is due to go into orbit on Sunday, where it will deploy a mesh radar antenna produced on a machine more commonly found in a textiles factory. “It’s a very standard, off‑the‑shelf industrial machine used for knitting jumpers. All we’ve done is add some bells and whistles to let it stitch our special yarns,” says Amool Raina, production lead at Oxford Space Systems (OSS) in the UK. The company has partnered with another UK-based firm, Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), to mount the antenna onto a small, inexpensive spacecraft capable of capturing high‑resolution images of Earth’s surface. If it performs as expected, a similar novel design will be adopted for a network of surveillance satellites for the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) later this decade. The “wool” in OSS’s knitting process is an ultra‑fine tungsten wire coated in gold. The company’s machine turns out metres of fabric at …

Will Ferrell’s Rink-Side Watch Should Be on Every Collector’s Radar

Will Ferrell’s Rink-Side Watch Should Be on Every Collector’s Radar

Is there a more delightful watch collector than Will Ferrell? We doubt it. He buys his own pieces locally at Feldmar Jewelers. He wears whatever he wants, regardless of price or provenance. He embraces crazy colors. He dresses up as a referee to cheer on the L.A. Kings. We should all be having this much fun with our watches (and perhaps spending a bit less time debating the definition of “in-house.”) Well, for those looking to cop a bit of the Ferrell magic, his latest Oris is a decent place to start. Established in Hölstein in 1904, this independent Swiss watchmaker sells handsome divers, chronographs, and—to the best of our knowledge—the world’s only Kermit the Frog-themed pilot’s watch, most of which can be had for less than $5,000. Ferrell’s a longtime fan, having previously appeared in a pink-dialed Acquis and a green-dialed Divers Sixty-Five, the brand’s imminently funky 1960s-inspired dive watch, during interviews.
