“Doesn’t Look Good”: Explosion Rocks Major New Orleans-Area Refinery As Fuel Markets Tighten

A fire broke out Friday afternoon at PBF Energy’s Chalmette refinery outside New Orleans, according to the facility. Reuters cited people familiar with the incident who said the 190,000-barrel-per-day Chalmette refinery suffered an explosion on Friday afternoon. The explosion can be traced to a reformer heater used to convert refining byproducts into octane-boosting components added to unfinished gasoline to make premium and mid-grade fuel blends. The 190,000-barrel-per-day refinery is one of the major Gulf Coast refineries because it produces gasoline, distillates, and specialty chemicals, so any sustained outage can impact regional fuel balances, especially gasoline and diesel supply. “Fence-line monitoring confirms no off-site impacts,” according to the message from the refinery. “Everyone working in the area is safe and accounted for.” I have been in direct contact with local officials and law enforcement on the ground regarding the situation at the Chalmette Refinery. Humiliation for Putin as Russia suspends huge oil refinery after Ukraine’s strikes | World | News

One of Russia’s largest oil refineries has been forced to halt operations following a wave of Ukrainian drone strikes, dealing a fresh blow to Moscow’s energy infrastructure. On Tuesday, May 5, the Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery in Russia’s Leningrad region suspended activity after three of its four crude distillation units were damaged, according to two industry sources cited by Reuters. The facility is understood to be the country’s second-largest refinery. The attack forms part of a broader escalation in Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign, which has intensified over the past two months. The strategy focuses on targeting critical elements of Russia’s oil industry, a key pillar of its war economy. Satellite data from NASA’s FIRMS monitoring service recorded thermal anomalies at the refinery site, indicating possible fire damage in the aftermath of the strike, United24 Media reports. Ukrainian drones directly targeted the facility in the town of Kirishi, causing large-scale disruption. Leningrad region governor Alexander Drozdenko said Russian air defences had intercepted 18 drones over the area, adding that emergency crews were working to contain fires caused …

Russia struggles to contain ‘massive’ fire at oil refinery after third Ukrainian strike in two weeks

A Ukrainian drone strike sparked a “massive” fire at a Russian oil refinery in Tuapse on Tuesday, as Kyiv stepped up its campaign to target a critical generator of funding for Vladimir Putin’s war chest. It was the third attack on the Black Sea port facility in less than two weeks as the Ukrainian military sought to disrupt the Russian oil and gas industry, which accounts for a big slice of Moscow’s federal budget. After the Ukrainian military claimed responsibility for the latest strike, Russia’s president Vladimir Putin said in remarks that were broadcast on Russian television that “drone attacks against civilian infrastructure are becoming more frequent”. “The latest example is the strike against energy facilities in Tuapse,” he added, “which could potentially cause serious environmental consequences.” The president dispatched Aleksandr Kurenkov to Tuapse where the emergency situations minister said the situation was “complicated but controllable”. Tesla lithium refinery discharge contains toxic metals, drainage district demands halt

Tesla lithium refinery discharge contains toxic metals, drainage district demands halt

Independent lab testing has found traces of hexavalent chromium — a known carcinogen — along with arsenic and elevated levels of lithium in wastewater discharged from Tesla’s nearly $1 billion lithium refinery in Robstown, Texas. The Nueces County Drainage District No. 2, which manages the ditch receiving Tesla’s 231,000-gallon daily discharge, has issued a cease-and-desist letter demanding the company halt its wastewater flow pending further discussion. The findings are particularly notable because when Tesla unveiled the Robstown refinery earlier this year, it touted the facility’s “acid-free” process as a cleaner alternative to traditional lithium refining. The company claimed its alkaline leach method produces benign byproducts — sand and limestone materials suitable for concrete — rather than the hazardous sodium sulfate waste typical of conventional acid-roasting operations. What the testing found The lab results, generated by accredited environmental testing firm Eurofins Environment Testing on April 10, paint a detailed picture of the refinery’s wastewater composition. Russia on fire as blaze erupts at oil refinery and maternity hospital evacuated | World | News

A huge fire has erupted at a oil refinery in Russia following a reported Ukrainian drone attack, with a nearby maternity hospital foced to evacuate children and patients. A large-scale drone strike hit an oil refinery in Novokuybyshevsk, in the Samara region, overnight, triggering a major fire and multiple explosions. The attacks led to a ceiling collapse and windows to shatter at a local maternity hospital, prompting its evacuation. All children and patients have been transferred to nearby medical facilities. Russian governor Vyacheslav Fedoryshchev confirmed the drone activity and stated that no casualties have been reported. Dramatic footage from the site shows thick black smoke billowing from the oil refinery, with emergency service sirens wailing in the background. In a night marked by widespread strikes on oil refineries, the Syzran refinery, also in the Samara region, was also targeted. Multiple explosions were reported here, with the oil refinery believed to be on fire. An air defence activation was reported and a nearby reservoir was also alight.
