Kia is killing off its cheapest gas car, but a new EV will replace it

Kia is killing off its cheapest gas car, but a new EV will replace it

Starting at about $20,000, the Picanto is Kia’s most affordable new car in Europe, the UK, and several other global markets. The entry-level gas car is likely on its way out as part of the shift to electrification, but Kia has a new EV that will replace it. Is Kia replacing the Picanto with an EV? The Picanto starts at just €17,590 ($20,000) in Germany and £17,095 ($23,000) in the UK, serving as an affordable city car. There’s just one (big) problem: It’s still powered by a gas engine. The Picanto is the last purely gas-powered city car you can buy in the UK, and with the government’s current Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, Kia will be forced to discontinue it by 2030. The UK’s ZEV mandate requires all vehicles to be fitted with some sort of hybrid system by 2030, and by 2035, all new cars will need to be fully electric. Could sodium replace lithium as the dominant ingredient in batteries?

Could sodium replace lithium as the dominant ingredient in batteries?

The world we live in today runs on batteries. But the lithium ion batteries that dominate the market are expensive and environmentally demanding to extract. The raw materials for lithium ion batteries are scarce and concentrated in a few geographical regions. This places continued pressure on supply chains. Sodium-ion batteries are a promising alternative because they use abundant materials. But sodium has shortcomings that have blocked it from being used as a replacement for lithium. In work carried out at the University of Limerick’s Bernal Institute, my team has now produced a battery that combines the strengths of sodium and lithium. This could lead to more sustainable batteries that reduce the supply chain pressures associated with lithium. The results have been published in the journal Nano Energy. Sodium-ion batteries lag behind lithium ones in their energy density. Energy density is the amount of energy stored in a battery relative to its weight or size. Lower battery energy densities have an impact on the devices and machines they power. If electric vehicles used battery modules with …

EUCO content creators ‘won’t replace EU journalists,’ says influencer

EUCO content creators ‘won’t replace EU journalists,’ says influencer

BRUSSELS — Influencers attending high-level EU meetings of ministers and leaders will not be replacing journalists, a content creator working with the Council of the EU said. Pietro Valetto, a 27-year-old influencer, has been invited to the Council next week for what was dubbed an “exclusive experience” in which creators will get to see behind the scenes at the EU institution. From July, influencers will also be invited to EU leaders’ summits in Brussels as well as certain ministerial meetings, as POLITICO reported earlier this month. That announcement prompted pushback from journalists who cover these summits and meetings. But Valetto said influencers won’t undermine the work of accredited reporters. “It’s a separate thing from journalists,” Valetto said. “It’s not like what the U.S is doing, where the White House invites specific creators to cover them,” he continued. Any content creators invited to EU summits will be able to attend press conferences and doorsteps, but won’t be allowed to ask questions, under plans by the Council presented to diplomats earlier this month. “Content creators will be …

How to replace a Prime Minister and get away with it – POLITICO

How to replace a Prime Minister and get away with it – POLITICO

As Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and former health secretary Wes Streeting jostle for influence in the Labour party, host Sascha O’Sullivan looks at what it takes to turn around a party’s fortunes mid-term. Former John Major aide Daniel Finkelstein explains how the Conservative Prime Minister managed to win the 1992 elections against the odds and differentiate himself from his predecessor, Margaret Thatcher. Theo Bertram, former Tony Blair and Gordon Brown advisor turned think tank boss, talks Sascha through Brown’s fateful decision not to call a snap election after taking over from Blair, and the challenge he faced in gripping the No. 10 machine. The most recent history of mid-term Prime Ministers might prove most instructive for any new Labour Prime Minister, and Rishi Sunak ‘s former deputy director of policy James Nation takes Sascha inside the effort to reboot his premiership. He tells Sascha Sunak’s team found themselves hamstrung by the manifesto commitments promised in 2019, and struggled to keep the party from infighting after taking over from Liz Truss. Sascha discusses the lessons …

Why Devices Can’t Replace Human Connection at Work

Why Devices Can’t Replace Human Connection at Work

According to the research, birth rates have steeply declined around the world over the past 15 years—one clear sign that people are spending less time connecting in person. While many factors contribute to falling birth rates, growing research suggests we are increasingly substituting digital interaction for deeper forms of human connection. In our workplaces, for example, email, texting, Slack, Zoom, and Teams leave far less time for normal discourse. The average person now spends a significant portion of their waking life communicating through devices (even during face-to-face meetings) rather than in the physical presence of other people. And while technology undoubtedly makes communication more convenient and efficient, it may also be quietly depleting one of the most important contributors to human well-being: genuine human contact. The Illusion of Togetherness Human beings are not wired simply to exchange information. We are biologically wired for social bonding and in-person interaction—nature’s way of helping us regulate stress, stabilize our mood, and create essential feelings of safety and belonging. When we experience genuine connection, our nervous systems are regulated, …

Standard Chartered To Replace “Lower-Value Human Capital” With AI As Meta Layoff D-Day Nears

The white-collar job-loss apocalypse, accelerated by AI, is increasingly concentrated in repetitive, data-intensive, and digitally native roles, with tech firms announcing layoffs one after another. While ‘D-Day’ for Meta layoffs is Wednesday morning, the London-headquartered international bank Standard Chartered announced on Tuesday plans to cut 15% of its corporate roles (or about 7800 jobs) by 2030 as part of a broader efficiency push amid the adoption of AI. STAN also raised its profitability targets, aiming for a 15% return on tangible equity by 2028 and roughly 18% by 2030. “Drive productivity improvements to raise income per employee by ~20 percent by 2028, aided by a reduction in corporate functions roles of >15 percent by 2030,” STAN wrote in a press release. STAN CEO Bill Winters stated in the release, “We are investing in the capabilities that will compound our competitive advantages and drive sustainable growth and higher quality returns over time, with clear targets in place.” To achieve this, Winters explained: “We are scaling practical uses of automation, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to streamline …

Brexit is already dominating the battle to replace Keir Starmer – POLITICO

Brexit is already dominating the battle to replace Keir Starmer – POLITICO

“Many businesses are saying that it’s been a challenge, that Brexit and the way in which it was implemented has challenged their ability to be competitive to get access to the EU market and therefore we should be addressing those challenges not going back to the old argument [of] are we in or out,” she said. That position hasn’t stopped her blasting Farage over the decision to leave, accusing the Reform UK leader of having promised “the moon on a stick.” She’s also declared that “when we left the European Union people were promised more money into the NHS, your living standards will be better — and the opposite has happened.” Keir Starmer What about the man himself? Starmer’s position on the EU has shifted several times already. Running for leader in 2019, he pledged to defend the free movement of people. Then, in opposition, he made it a red line, along with staying out of the EU’s customs union and single market. Before taking power, he talked about Brexit as little as possible. In office, …

UK ex-health minister says will run to replace Prime Minister Keir Starmer | Politics News

Pressure mounts on Starmer’s government, as Labour rivals including recently resigned Wes Streeting circle. Published On 16 May 202616 May 2026 Wes Streeting, the former British health secretary who resigned from the government this week, says he will run to replace Prime Minister Keir Starmer when the contest is triggered. Starmer’s government has been on the edge, with the United Kingdom leader facing calls for resignation since his ruling Labour party suffered disastrous local elections. Though Starmer has brushed aside growing criticism, a Labour contest to replace him looks all but inevitable in London. While still not announcing he has kickstarted the formal leadership challenge process, Streeting confirmed on Saturday that he will vie to replace Starmer and become the centre-left Labour’s new leader. Whoever leads the governing party, which has a big majority in the UK’s parliament, will by default become prime minister. “We need a proper contest with the best candidates on the field, and I’ll be standing,” Streeting told a think tank event in London on Saturday. The former health secretary has urged …

Don’t replace your slow Fire TV Stick until you try these fixes

Streaming devices aren’t meant to last forever, and your Fire TV Stick is no different. But that doesn’t mean you have to replace it the moment things start feeling slow. In most cases, it’s the cache buildup, unused apps, and outdated software that’s responsible for the slowdown rather than the hardware. Thankfully, a bit of optimization is all it takes to make your old Fire TV Stick run like new again. And the good news is doing this doesn’t take much time or effort. Related These 5 Fire TV features made my streaming setup much more useful A few Fire TV settings worth changing right away.
