IAEA Board Passes Resolution Demanding Iran Report Uranium Stocks

IAEA Board Passes Resolution Demanding Iran Report Uranium Stocks

VIENNA, June 10 (Reuters) – The U.N. nuclear watchdog’s 35-nation Board of Governors passed a U.S.-backed resolution on Wednesday telling Iran to declare its remaining enriched uranium stocks and let inspectors verify them, which could complicate Washington’s talks with Tehran. The move came within hours of the U.S. and Iran trading military strikes after U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran ‌had downed a U.S. Apache helicopter near ‌the Strait of Hormuz. Israeli and U.S. attacks last June destroyed or badly damaged Iranian uranium-enrichment plants but much of the enriched uranium they produced, including material close to weapons grade, is thought to have survived.  IRAN SAYS BOARD ‘WHITEWASHING’ US ATTACKS Iran still has not informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of the fate of that material, or let IAEA inspectors return to the bombed sites to check. The U.S. led the push for the resolution, but Iran has called it “whitewashing military aggression,” since inspectors had access before the strikes. The resolution text submitted by the U.S., Britain, France and Germany was passed with 21 votes …

France Readies UN Resolution on Hormuz as Vote on US Text Stalls

PARIS, May 21 (Reuters) – France has drafted a U.N. Security Council resolution on setting up an international mission to restore movement in the Strait of Hormuz and could submit it if conditions are right, the foreign ministry said on Friday, ‌as Washington struggles to bring to ‌a vote a text Russia and China may say is biased against Tehran. Control of the narrow waterway, a vital artery for global energy trade whose virtual closure has led to spiralling oil prices, is a major obstacle in talks to end the three-month-old U.S.-Iran war.   A U.S.-Bahraini resolution on the strait has been under discussion for more than two weeks, with a vote repeatedly delayed as China and Russia signal they could veto it. The U.S.-Bahraini draft resolution demands Iran halt attacks and mining in the strait. China and Russia vetoed a similar U.S.-backed text in April, arguing it was biased against Tehran. Washington has secured almost 140 countries to co-sponsor its text in the hope of avoiding a veto, two European diplomats said.  France, another veto-wielding power, …

Mariam Zuhaib/AP hide caption toggle caption Mariam Zuhaib/AP WASHINGTON — Republicans struggled Thursday to find the votes to dismiss legislation that would compel President Donald Trump to withdraw from the war with Iran, delaying planned votes on the matter into June. The House had scheduled a vote on a war powers resolution, brought by Democrats, that would rein in Trump’s military campaign. But as it became clear that Republicans would not have the numbers to defeat the bill, GOP leaders declined to hold a vote on it. It was the latest sign of the slipping support in Congress for a war that Trump launched more than two months ago without congressional approval. “We had the votes without question and they knew it, and as a result they’re playing a political game,” said Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks, who sponsored the bill. Republicans in the Senate are also working to ensure they have the votes to dismiss …

Vote to advance War Powers Resolution seen as rare rebuke of the president as pressure grows to end US attacks on Iran. Published On 20 May 202620 May 2026 The United States Senate has advanced a War Powers Resolution that could prevent President Donald Trump from using military force against Iran without congressional authorisation amid widening fallout from the conflict. The vote on a procedural measure to advance the resolution was passed on Tuesday by a margin of 50 to 47, with a handful of Republicans joining Democratic colleagues to pass the measure in a rare rebuke of the president. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list The vote showed that a small but growing number of Republicans are increasingly uneasy with a war that shows no signs of ending, amid a fragile ceasefire, and are willing to challenge the president. “This president is like a toddler playing with a loaded gun,” Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said before the vote. “If there was ever a time to support our war powers resolution …

Bill Cassidy, R-La., who just lost his primary for renomination over the weekend after he faced opposition from Trump, voted “yes” to advance the measure, the first time he has done so after having repeatedly voted “no.” “While I support the administration’s efforts to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program, the White House and Pentagon have left Congress in the dark on Operation Epic Fury,” Cassidy said in a statement. “In Louisiana, I’ve heard from people, including President Trump’s supporters, who are concerned about this war. Until the administration provides clarity, no congressional authorization or extension can be justified.” The other Republicans who crossed party lines to support the procedural motion were Rand Paul of Kentucky, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, all of whom have voted …

One of the Pentagon’s top technology leaders ruled out any reconciliation with Anthropic, despite the White House softening its own tone on the AI company. “Never again will we be single-threaded with any one model,” Emil Michael, under secretary of Defense for research and engineering, said Thursday in a fireside chat at the AI+ Expo… Source link

5 research-backed skills for open dialogue and conflict resolution

The world can feel like it’s getting ever-more polarised. Televised debate is shrill. Social media is both siloing us off into echo chambers and creating daily outrages on which instant opinions must be formed and battlelines immediately drawn. But it doesn’t need to be like this. Diverse communities can hold diverse opinions and still co-exist happily. As a society, we can have free speech, reasoned dialogue and diversity of thought if we learn to disagree well. Encouraging this kind of respectful, attentive dialogue has always been one of the key roles of the nation’s universities, which is one of the reasons that University College London (UCL) has expanded its Disagreeing Well programme, an initiative designed to promote the kind of careful listening and thoughtful dialogue that enables all of us to challenge our assumptions and open up our minds to new perspectives. A centrepiece of the programme is the Disagreeing Well Video Skills series, written and hosted by Mia Forbes Pirie, international conflict mediator and UCL alumna, in which she explores five fundamental skills for …

The Senate unanimously agreed to a resolution Thursday barring its members from trading on prediction markets in the face of growing concerns about insider trading on the platforms.
