Union Seminary’s Rev. Dr. Serene Jones

Union Seminary’s Rev. Dr. Serene Jones

Rev. Dr. Serene Jones served as president of Union Theological Seminary in New York City for 18 years—long enough to see her own daughter graduate from the historic institution. During that time, she has been a strong advocate for integrating activism with theological education, mirroring her own calling and journey. We get Rev. Jones’ insights into how a seminary education has changed in the past two decades, and how today’s students are facing the challenges and realities of 2026 America. Her take on how churches and universities kept our democracy knitted together, and how the moral discourse that came from that has diasppeared, is a powerful warning, and an urgent call to action. More about Rev. Dr. Serene Jones Rev. Dr. Serene Jones has been a Yale professor, President of the American Academy of Religion, and, for the past 18 years, President of the historic Union Theological Seminary in New York City. The institution promises to “prepare its students for committed lives of service to the church, academy, and society,” and Serene Jones is …

The Black Church and the Gutting of the Voting Rights Act with Rev. Thomas L. Bowen

The Black Church and the Gutting of the Voting Rights Act with Rev. Thomas L. Bowen

In the same two weeks, the Trump Anti-Christian Bias Task Force filled 560 pages with reports of deliberate discrimination by the Biden administration (and pretty much everyone else), and the Supreme Court ruled that anti-minority bias is gone from our elections and the landmark Voting Rights Act is no longer needed. That’s exactly backwards, and we’ll get a chance to hear the expert opinion of Rev. Thomas L. Bowen, General Secretary of the Progressive National Baptist Convention—the denominational home of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Thomas was Senior Advisor for Faith Engagement in the Biden White House, so he had a front-row seat for how decisions of faith were actually handled. He’s also already organizing to reduce the damage todemocracy that the high court’s anti-VRA decision is sure to cause. More about Rev. Thomas L. Bowen Rev. Bowen is General Secretary of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC). Headquartered in Northwest Washington, D.C. and boasting more than two and a half million members, the denomination is known as the spiritual home of …

The Catholic Response to Trump’s Attacks on the Church with Dr. Anthea Butler and Rev. James Martin, SJ

The Catholic Response to Trump’s Attacks on the Church with Dr. Anthea Butler and Rev. James Martin, SJ

Have you noticed how Pope Leo’s calm, fearless stance is rattling those in power? He’s not just speaking to Catholics; he’s challenging the very idea that religion should be silent in times of crisis, whether the topic is war or the treatment of immigrants. This week, host Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush welcomes two leading American Catholic voices: religion professor Dr. Anthea Butler and best-selling author Father Jim Martin, SJ. They’ve got deep insights on the ways race, religion, and political priorities inform the furious responses from the White House and other powerful figures—and efforts to deny the moral authority of the head of one of the world’s largest religions. Dr. Anthea Butler is Geraldine R. Segal Professor of Social Thought and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She’s the author of the book White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America. Rev. Jim Martin is editor-at-large at the Jesuit America Magazine, consultor to the Vatican, and author of many books, including his latest—a memoir titled Work in …

The Rev. Dr. Adam J. Shoemaker elected ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island

The Rev. Dr. Adam J. Shoemaker elected ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island

The Rev. Dr. Adam J. Shoemaker was elected ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island on April 18 by nearly 300 clergy and lay delegates, meeting at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, New York.  Shoemaker was elected on the fourth ballot by 95 votes in the clergy order and 76 votes in the lay order. The election required a majority in both orders on the same ballot, in accordance with the diocesan constitution.   Shoemaker said, “I am deeply humbled by the trust this convention has placed in me and accept the call to serve as your next diocesan bishop with hope and faith in what God will do among us. I look forward to laboring together across the Diocese of Long Island as one body in Christ, and I ask your prayers as we begin this new chapter together.”  Shoemaker serves as rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. He has previously ministered in congregations in North Carolina and Massachusetts and served as a missionary in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  An Egyptian American raised in Huntington, New York, he was formed in the …

Retrospec Judd Rev 2 Electric Folding Bike Review: Affordable, Simple, Easy to Store

Retrospec Judd Rev 2 Electric Folding Bike Review: Affordable, Simple, Easy to Store

The bike’s 36V/360-Wh lithium ion battery is certified to UL2271 and UL2849 safety standards for electric bicycles, which means the bike’s electrical systems are about as safe as it gets. The battery is also easily removable from the frame, meaning you can unlock it, unclip it, and charge it inside your home or office. Heavy Weight Photograph: Michael Venutolo-Mantovani Now, no bike is perfect. Let’s step back a bit and talk about the fact that the Rev 2 weighs 60 pounds which, yes, is a lot for an analog bike. For an ebike, it’s pretty average. In a strange way, the fun I had riding the Judd Rev 2 made it feel lighter than many comparably hefty ebikes. While I do love a 20-inch wheel, it feels incompatible with a commuter, especially if you’re commuting in a city. As most American cities are littered with potholes, the 20-inch wheels, wrapped in 2.1-inch-wide tires, feel just a bit inadequate. (This is partly a matter of personal preference, as editor Adrienne So’s own ebike has 20-inch wheels.) …

His arrest went viral. Now Rev. Michael Woolf is preaching what he calls ‘Sanctuary values.’

His arrest went viral. Now Rev. Michael Woolf is preaching what he calls ‘Sanctuary values.’

(RNS) — For most people, being slammed to the pavement by a group of police officers and violently handcuffed in front of a screaming crowd would be a traumatic experience. When that situation befell the Rev. Michael Woolf last November as he was protesting outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility near Chicago, he says the experience was, indeed, “extremely traumatic” — but it was also something else. “I had a lot of clarity when that was happening,” Woolf, with a lingering Alabama twang, told Religion News Service in a recent interview. According to Woolf, a pastor ordained in both the American Baptist Churches USA and Alliance of Baptists denominations, that clarity came from recognizing the significance of a white pastor with U.S. citizenship advocating for immigrant rights. In addition to immigration being an emphasis of his ministry for years, his doctoral dissertation was focused on the Sanctuary Movement, the 1980s-era faith-led effort where houses of worship defied the federal government by offering up their churches as living spaces to migrants from Central America. To …

Rev. Jesse Jackson, Civil Rights Leader, Dies at Age 84

Rev. Jesse Jackson, Civil Rights Leader, Dies at Age 84

Born out of wedlock in Greenville, South Carolina, as Jesse Louis Burns, in 1941, Jackson, as a teenager, would take the last name of his stepfather. His childhood, like those of millions of Black people across the Jim Crow South, was one wracked by crippling poverty, rigid segregation, and the visceral, ever-present threat of physical violence. In a 1988 interview with Canadian television, he noted, “Suffice it to say, I grew up under the laws of apartheid in this country, lived under racial segregation, an environment that fostered low expectations. Something told me I could make a difference.” An athlete, he traveled north to attend the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, only to drop out and return home to become a member of the “Greenville Eight,” who, in 1960, conducted sit-ins to integrate the Greenville County Public Library, thus marking his entry into the rapidly advancing Civil Rights Movement. Returning to school at North Carolina A&T College and marrying Jacqueline Lavinia Davis, he continued to help lead local protests and demonstrations. Following graduation, he enrolled at …
