The Tories think they’re onto a winning plan — even as they keep losing – POLITICO

The Tories are currently polling at 19 percent, according to YouGov — the same number the party was on before almost a quarter of the Labour Party called on its own prime minister to resign over his short-lived appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the United States. As Scarlett Maguire, pollster and founder of Merlin Strategy, said: “The Conservatives are in a very difficult position tactically. When they criticize Labour — they spent a lot of time working on the Mandelson story — who did it benefit? It benefited Reform.” Badenoch and her top shadow ministers think they can turn that around. The Conservative Party now has a plan to rebuild after a devastating loss in 2024. In the latest episode of the Westminster Insider podcast, POLITICO spoke to a dozen senior people in the party about how they hope to pull themselves back from the brink.  Competent, and maybe boring First up is demonstrated what one senior shadow cabinet member — granted anonymity like others in this article to speak freely on internal …

Italy Court Extends Widow Pension Rights to Same-Sex Couples Married Abroad

Italy Court Extends Widow Pension Rights to Same-Sex Couples Married Abroad

ROME, May 28 (Reuters) – Italy’s Constitutional Court said on Thursday that widow pension rights apply to same-sex couples who married abroad before civil partnerships were legalised ‌in the country, in ‌another win for its LGBTQ+ community.  Italy’s 2016 law on civil unions grants same-sex couples some prerogatives normally associated with heterosexual marriages, including the right to inherit a widow’s pension in case of death. However, welfare agency INPS refused a pension to a man who lost his partner in 2015, on account of their marriage having been celebrated in 2013, in New York, before the Italian law came into force. The man appealed, prompting a lawsuit that went all the way to the Constitutional Court. Ruling in his favour, the court partly struck down a law from 1939, during Italy’s fascist era, which had been used to deny the payments.  Denying a widow’s pension to the surviving partner of a same-sex couple would result “in an unjustified disparity in treatment compared to other categories of survivors’ pension recipients,” the court said in a statement.  …

The Witness, Inc. launches ‘Not Going Back’ campaign to defend voting rights

The Witness, Inc. launches ‘Not Going Back’ campaign to defend voting rights

Black Christian leaders across the country have signed the declaration. We will not go back. CLAYMONT, Del. — The Witness, Inc., a Black Christian Collective dedicated to racial justice, announced the launch of its Not Going Back campaign, a national invitation calling Black Christian leaders and their allies to publicly oppose the accelerating erosion of voting rights for Black communities. Led by President and CEO Danielle Marck, the campaign speaks from a specific and historic tradition; the prophetic Black Church has never separated faith and civic life. From Reconstruction to the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter, Black Christians have put their bodies, voices, and institutions on the line to secure civil rights. Not Going Back is a declaration that this generation will not allow these contributions to be in vain. “The Black church has always known that voting rights are not simply a political issue. The fight for our rights is a justice issue, a moral issue, and a theological one. We are rising, once again, to the moment and to the legacy …

Brussels watchdog moves to ban Alternative for Germany’s EU party – POLITICO

Brussels watchdog moves to ban Alternative for Germany’s EU party – POLITICO

The ESN political group doesn’t face sanctions, and the only effect that AfD MEPs would feel would be the lack of a political party to provide support in future EU elections or to coordinate policy with like-minded factions. The ESN party and ESN group were founded by Alternative for Germany in the wake of the 2024 EU election, and include Bulgaria’s Revival, France’s Reconquest (led by Éric Zemmour), Poland’s Confederation, Czechia’s SPD, Hungary’s Our Homeland Movement, the Netherlands’ Forum for Democracy, and Slovakia’s Republic Movement. In 2026 it is slated to receive over €2 million in subsidies from the European Parliament. The watchdog — the Authority for European Political Parties and Foundations — said it had found evidence that “cast doubt on the compliance” of the ESN party with EU values, the director of the authority, Pascal Schonard, wrote in a letter. The missive was addressed to the Council of the EU — comprising representatives of national governments — and was seen by POLITICO on Wednesday. The watchdog’s process was launched on Friday. The watchdog monitors whether …

The West only discovers property rights when the landowners are white | Opinions

On May 7, Zimbabwe’s Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka announced in parliament that the government would return 67 farms seized during the country’s land reform programme to European nationals from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The farms, he said, were protected under bilateral investment protection agreements signed between Zimbabwe and the four European states before the land seizures. The measure forms part of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s effort to restore relations with Western governments and international financial institutions after more than two decades of crisis, sanctions, isolation and debt default linked in part to the fast-track land reform programme of the early 2000s. Zimbabwe is trying to restructure about $11.7bn in external debt, including $7.7bn owed to multilateral and bilateral creditors. On May 20, the International Monetary Fund approved a staff-monitored programme to support reforms and debt restructuring. Resolving disputes linked to land reform has become central to that re-engagement process. In July 2020, Zimbabwe signed a $3.5bn compensation agreement with former white commercial farmers for infrastructure and improvements on acquired land. Last year, it began …

Reform Makerfield candidate: Russia ‘within their rights’ to take Crimea

Reform Makerfield candidate: Russia ‘within their rights’ to take Crimea

Reform UK’s candidate in the Makerfield by-election said Russia was “within their rights” to invade Crimea in 2014. In an online forum, Robert Kenyon agreed with a post that described the annexation of Crimea as “democracy in action”. Under a post titled “Hypocrisy of the West regarding Ukraine in the sin bin”, one forum member wrote: “The people of the Crimea want to be in Russia, for me that is democracy in action. “The government should work for the people, not the other way round. The people have spoken and they have what they want. The Falklands and Gibraltar, they want to stay British, so be it.” Mr Kenyon replied: “I agree totally, Russia are well within their rights to do what they have done, as we did with the Falklands. However, will Latvia be next?” It is the latest in a string of historical comments made by Mr Kenyon that could damage Reform’s campaign against Labour’s Andy Burnham in Makerfield. Last week, a poll showed Reform trailing Labour by only 3 per cent in …

Former PM Tsipras looks to unite Greece’s fragmented opposition with new party – POLITICO

Former PM Tsipras looks to unite Greece’s fragmented opposition with new party – POLITICO

The 53-year-old pediatrician emerged as a figurehead in a wave of protests against the country’s political establishment, following the crash and a perceived cover-up by the authorities. She ultimately alienated many people, however, with comments that veered close to right-wing populism on topics such as abortion rights and relations with Turkey. “Her positions are very reminiscent of [Italy’s] 5Star Movement, but with a much stronger patriotic and nationalist slant and a focus on corruption,” Seriatos said. “While it started with moral capital and it seemed that many people would be receptive to what it had to say politically, she is on a downward trajectory,” he added. Critics have also accused her of surrounding herself with figures who maintain pro-Russian views or ties to Moscow. Another party from the right of the political spectrum is likely to emerge from former Prime Minister and New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras. He was expelled from the party back in 2024 after strongly criticizing government policies, including on the relationship with neighboring Turkey, as well as what he considers “woke” …

Mental Health Law Needs a Family Bill of Rights

Mental Health Law Needs a Family Bill of Rights

Last month, The Hastings Center for Bioethics released an essay calling for a Family Bill of Rights for the Relatives of Patients with Serious Mental Illness. Their thinking illustrates today’s growing recognition that dogmatic defenses of patient autonomy above all may do more harm than good when strictly applied to individuals with mental illness. Using the federal Crime Victim’s Rights Act as a model, the Hastings Center for Bioethics proposal would allow “a limited but meaningful role for families in legal determinations for certain patients with severe mental illness.” It puts forth three essential concepts, all necessary based on my decades of experience as a family-focused mental health attorney: The right to be aware: With the exception of family members with a history of domestic violence, laws should require psychiatric hospitals to notify close relatives when individuals are involuntarily committed. The right to be present: Unless a court determines that their presence would create a specific risk of harm, close relatives should be permitted to attend commitment and treatment legal hearings. The right to be …

Zee Entertainment in talks with FIFA on World Cup broadcast rights in India

May 26 : India’s Zee Entertainment is in talks with FIFA to stream and broadcast the 2026 World Cup in the country, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.  • The announcement, which provided no financial details, comes as talks between a Reliance-Disney joint venture and the football body are at a deadlock, just weeks before the tournament kicks off on June 11. • FIFA, which had initially sought $100 million for broadcast rights for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups in India, was last looking for no less than about $60 million, Reuters had reported. • The expected amount still far exceeds the $20 million offered by Reliance-Disney, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance. • Sony also held talks but decided not to make an offer for FIFA rights for India. • FIFA has concluded agreements with broadcasters in more than 180 territories globally, it said previously. • Zee Entertainment disclosed its talks with FIFA as part of its launch of Unite8 Sports, a dedicated portfolio of sports channels to strengthen its sports …

Trump’s latest move to restrict voting rights

Trump’s latest move to restrict voting rights

Considering the current hysteria over alleged non-citizen voting, it may come as a surprise to many Americans that for a good part of our history, many states not only allowed it, they actively encouraged it. According to “The Passing of Alien Suffrage” by Leon E. Aylsworth, at least 22 states allowed non-citizens to vote during the 19th-century. Some states were trying to fulfill certain population numbers to meet statehood requirements, while others in the post-Civil War period needed to replace the newly freed enslaved population and used the vote as an enticement for immigrant labor. However, as one would expect, they generally only extended the franchise to white men, excluding those of different races and women.  By the 1920s, most states had put a stop to the practice. Waves of xenophobia had swept the nation at the turn of the century following a massive surge of immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe. Congress enacted strict immigration quotas that remained until the 1960s. The idea of non-citizen voting happening today is preposterous. In its 2007 report …
