Iran ‘downs US drone’ and ‘shoots at American F-35 jet’ as WW3 fears explode | World | News

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Tuesday it reserved the “legitimate and definite” right to retaliate against any ceasefire violations by the U.S., adding that its air defence units had shot down a U.S. MQ-9 drone and fired at a F-35 fighter jet that had entered Iranian airspace, state media reported. It claims the F-35, the worlds most advanced and lethal fighter jet, was forced to leave its airspace. The IRGC added that it also fired at an RQ4 intelligence collection drone. This comes after the US carried out what it called “self-defence” strikes in southern Iran overnight, threatening a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. The strikes hit coastal towns near the Strait of Hormuz which remains closed as peace negotiations continue. Targets also included missile launch sites and and Iranian mine-laying boats. The key waterway has been closed for almost three months as part of Iran’s retaliation to joint US-Israeli strikes on several of its key sites. The US responded by blocking Iranian ports in the strait. “U.S. forces conducted self-defense strikes in …

Graeme Sloan | Bloomberg | Getty Images A person who approached a White House security checkpoint and began firing at officers has died, according to federal officials. The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement late Saturday that, according to a preliminary investigation, the person approached a checkpoint shortly after 6 p.m. ET, “removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers.” Officers returned fire and hit the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died, according to the Secret Service. A bystander was struck, but a law enforcement official said it wasn’t clear whether that person was struck by the suspect’s initial bullets or those fired subsequently by officers. Secret Service said none of its officers were injured, and that President Donald Trump — who was at the White House at the time — was not “impacted.” Evidence of the shooting was visible on a sidewalk just …

Ruben Östlund Shoots New Scene of ‘The Entertainment System Is Down’

Ruben Östlund Shoots New Scene of ‘The Entertainment System Is Down’

Ruben Östlund may not be competing at Cannes this year — the two-time Palme d’Or winner (The Square, Triangle of Sadness) took his new, still-unfinished film, The Entertainment System Is Down out of contention for the 2026 fest — but he still found time for a quick trip to the Croisette. The Swedish filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter he is still deep in post-production for the film, and does not expect it be done before the end of the year. Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, and Keanu Reeves are among the starry cast in Östlund’s new satire, set on a long-haul flight between England and Australia where the entertainment system fails and passengers are forced to face the existential horror of boredom. Östlund said he continues to tweak the movie, including adding a new sequence with Succession star Nicholas Braun. “I’m going to Amsterdam. We’re going to shoot a little additional scene that came up during the editing,” he said. “I got an idea during the editing that I think is really great so we’re going …

Aneta Grzeszykowska Shoots Portraits in a Mask of Herself at Age 14

Aneta Grzeszykowska Shoots Portraits in a Mask of Herself at Age 14

Aneta Grzeszykowska is a Polish artist who has turned her sense of self inside-out and back again in two photo series currently having a moment in New York: “Mama” (2018), for which she made an uncannily life-like doll of herself that she asked her young daughter to play with, and “Daughter” (2025), for which she donned a similarly disquieting mask of her younger self at age 14 and posed with members of her family, including her now-teenage daugther. “Mama” features in the “New Humans” exhibition at the recently reopened New Museum and has shown in numerous contexts, including in the “Milk of Dreams” exhibition at the 2022 Venice Biennale. “Daughter” is currently showing at Lyles & King gallery on the Lower East Side (through May 9) as well as in “Adolescence,” a recently opened group show at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw. The two series follow on from artwork Grzeszykowska has been making since she created “Album,” a 2005 series of old family photographs from which she removed herself, leaving a sort …

US Says It Sinks Iranian Small Boats, Shoots Down Missiles, Drones as It Opens Strait

US Says It Sinks Iranian Small Boats, Shoots Down Missiles, Drones as It Opens Strait

By Phil Stewart and Idrees Ali WASHINGTON, May 4 (Reuters) – The U.S. military said on Monday it destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted Iranian cruise missiles and drones as Tehran sought to thwart a new U.S. naval effort to open shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump launched the operation, called Project Freedom, on Monday as he sought to wrest control of the critical waterway from Iran, which effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz after ‌the U.S. and Israel started the conflict on February ‌28. U.S. Admiral Brad Cooper, the head of Central Command, declined to comment on whether he thought a ceasefire begun on April 8 remained in effect as Iran lashed out in region, including with drone and missile attacks on the UAE on Monday. But Cooper acknowledged Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps efforts to “interfere” with Trump’s operation. “The IRGC has launched multiple cruise missiles, drones and small boats at ships we are protecting. We have defeated each and every one of those threats through the clinical application …

Step into a C-drama: Hanfu photo shoots surge in Singapore

Step into a C-drama: Hanfu photo shoots surge in Singapore

Homemaker Cynthia Hou had always been fascinated by the opulence of the Tang Dynasty, remembered for its prosperity and lavish fashion. The 43-year-old often wondered what it would be like to dress up in the traditional attire of that era. “I was especially drawn to its aesthetic richness. And on a slightly cheeky note, since I’m not exactly a standard-sized Asian, I like to think I might have fit the beauty ideals of that era quite well,” she quipped. Hou had originally considered travelling to China for a photo shoot but discovered that the experience was available here in Singapore. She decided to turn it into a family outing with her sister and 74-year-old mother. The trio spent seven-and-a-half hours getting styled in Tang Dynasty-inspired hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing), complete with elaborate updos and intricate accessories, before stepping in front of the camera. Even her mother was on board and needed no persuading. “The whole experience was such a joy,” Hou said. “I didn’t realise how much thought went into every single detail – the outfits, colours, …

L.A. to Cut Permit Costs for ‘Low Impact’ Film Shoots

L.A. to Cut Permit Costs for ‘Low Impact’ Film Shoots

L.A.’s film office on Tuesday unveiled a six-month pilot program aimed at removing cost barriers for small shoots as outcry over Hollywood’s production downturn has snowballed into a political campaign issue. FilmLA’s new “Low Impact Permit Pilot Program” will reduce the city’s typical permit fees for tiny productions with fewer than 30 cast and crew members. The program will only apply to productions that shoot for a maximum of three consecutive days and in a maximum of three locations. For those who meet the qualifications, application fees will drop from the typical $931 to $350, and notification fees will drop from $250 per location to $156 per location. L.A. Fire Department spot check fees ($285) will also be waived for these shoots. The initiative will roll out starting April 27. That criterion makes the program seem tailor-made for microdramas, small student films and various new media productions, but it will not apply to the majority of professional feature films, television series and commercials. The initiative was announced during a press event at Echelon Studios, a …

Divisive Netflix film The Killer shoots up charts despite being labelled ‘a disappointment’

Divisive Netflix film The Killer shoots up charts despite being labelled ‘a disappointment’

Back in 2024, Peacock released The Killer, a remake of the film of the same name, which was released back in 1989, with both films being written and directed by John Woo. The film attracted plenty of negative reviews during initial release, but the film has found new life again on Netflix, and despite all the poor critiques, the film has nearly topped the streamer’s charts in the UK, only behind recent shark film, Thrash. The film follows a contract killer, Zee, played by Nathalie Emmanuel, who ends up being hunted by her former employers and police officers after a hit goes wrong. The killings ends up leaving a singer Jenn Clark, played by Diana Silvers, blind, and Zee refuses to kill her as a result of the injury. A synopsis for the movie reads: “After being betrayed by her master, a disillusioned assassin takes one final shot with the intention of using the money to help a musician she accidentally blinded regain vision.” WATCH: The trailer for The Killer Despite its poor reviews, the …

Film Shoots Declined in U.S. This Year, Except In New Jersey

Film Shoots Declined in U.S. This Year, Except In New Jersey

Across the United States, the volume of movie and TV on-location production filming slowed in the first quarter of this year, with one state marking an exception: New Jersey. The Garden State made gains in both filming count (up 45 percent year-over-year) as well as production spend (up 37 percent), while other major markets either saw declines or were relatively flat, according to production intelligence platform ProdPro’s quarterly report released on Tuesday. The tracking firm attributes New Jersey’s gains to a “surge in episodic activity” as more series shoot in the state that’s been deemed “Hollywood East” due to its mix of tax incentives, studio infrastructure and available crew. And that’s before a trio of major studio complexes are even completed. Netflix is investing $1 billion to build its East coast base with 12 soundstages at the former site of Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Paramount inked a 10-year lease in October to occupy 85,000 square feet of the in-construction 1888 Studios in Bayonne, while Lionsgate is set as the anchor tenant of Great Point Studios in …
