Oscar Nominee Wagner Moura Can’t Help But Speak His Mind

Oscar Nominee Wagner Moura Can’t Help But Speak His Mind

You’ve been living in the US for a few years. How are you taking in this particular moment in this country? What scares me most with the world, not just the US, is that the idea of truth is kind of over. That facts, they don’t matter anymore. That is the biggest issue, because when facts don’t matter—when people start to live in different mental worlds, in different realities—then how can you build a bridge? Do you feel like celebrities have a responsibility when they’re onstage, say at the Oscars, to say something political? I never bought the pressure on celebrities to speak up, because I don’t think that’s even fair. People should speak up if they feel in their bones that they have to. Because in order to do that, you have to be aware that there will be consequences. This conversation that I’m having with you right now—I have no doubt that, especially given how polarized this world is, some people are gonna go, “Oh, that’s interesting. I kind of agree with what …

Most of the athletes who spoke that day voiced concern, calling for de-escalation, tolerance and respect. “The Olympics represent peace, so let’s not only bring world peace but domestic peace within our country,” said Alex Ferreira, a 31-year-old who won silver and bronze medals at past Winter Games. Svea Irving from Winter Park, Colorado chimed in. “It’s definitely a tough time in our country right now,” the 23-year-old said. “I just continue to represent my values [which are] …

William and Kate say they are “deeply concerned” by the scandal which has engulfed the monarchy and Westminster, and their thoughts are with the victims. A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: “I can confirm that the Prince and Princess of Wales have been deeply concerned by the continued revelations. “Their thoughts remain focused on the victims.” The ongoing Epstein scandal was reignited when a huge tranche of millions of documents associated with Epstein were released by US authorities a week ago. The documents sparked allegations made against William’s uncle Andrew and led to police launching a investigation into Lord Peter Mandelson over alleged misconduct in public office. William and Kate say they are ‘deeply concerned’ by the Jeffrey Epstein scandal …

AI-powered neck wearable helps stroke survivors speak again without implants

AI-powered neck wearable helps stroke survivors speak again without implants

After a stroke, losing clear speech can feel like being locked inside your own thoughts. You may know exactly what you want to say. Your throat and mouth simply will not cooperate. Now researchers at the University of Cambridge say a soft, washable neck device could help you speak again; without brain implants or slow, letter-by-letter typing. A soft “choker” built for real conversation The wearable system, called Revoice, was led by Professor Luigi Occhipinti at Cambridge’s Department of Engineering. His team designed the device as a flexible choker that sits lightly around your neck. It reads two kinds of signals at once: tiny throat muscle vibrations linked to silent speech, and pulse patterns that offer clues about emotion. “When people have dysarthria following a stroke, it can be extremely frustrating for them, because they know exactly what they want to say, but physically struggle to say it, because the signals between their brain and their throat have been scrambled by the stroke,” said Professor Luigi Occhipinti from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, who led the …

Sohrab/Middle East Images / AFP via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Sohrab/Middle East Images / AFP via Getty Images The death toll from ongoing protests in Iran has surpassed 6,000, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency. With a recent partial lifting of the internet and communication blackout, more videos of violence and death are leaking from the country, while more Iranians speak out about their experiences. Over the past few weeks, an NPR producer reached out to several people in Iran to tell their story. People were terrified by the brutal government crackdown and wouldn’t allow us to record their voices. Eventually, three women agreed because they want the world to know what is happening in Iran, on the condition that we protect their identities. Here are their stories: On Jan. 8, an unemployed content creator left her home in Karaj, a suburb of Tehran, and went out onto the street. She had heard …

Why some people speak up against prejudice, while others do not

Why some people speak up against prejudice, while others do not

When people encounter racism or discrimination, they don’t all respond in the same way. Some calmly challenge the remark, some file a complaint, others confront the offender aggressively – and many say nothing at all. A common assumption is that speaking up against discrimination is a matter of personal courage, political ideology or education. But my recent research suggests that people’s cultural values, shaped by their backgrounds and life experiences, strongly influence how they confront discrimination. Confrontation comes in very different forms. Some choose to confront non-aggressively (such as calmly pointing out prejudice, explaining why it is offensive or sharing how it impacts them emotionally). Others prefer relatively more aggressive confrontation (such as shouting back, threatening or physical retaliation). These responses carry different risks and consequences, both for the person confronting and for wider social relations. My recent study with colleagues Thomas Kessler and Ayşe K. Uskul looked at how people’s cultural views of honour affected how they might respond to an insult or discrimination. Honour is often misunderstood as a personal trait or a …

Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Troublemaker’ Lets Nelson Mandela Speak for Himself

Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Troublemaker’ Lets Nelson Mandela Speak for Himself

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Antoine Fuqua always knew Nelson Mandela as an icon. But he had no idea he was such a rebel too, and a literal fighter. He remembered walking into a restaurant and seeing a picture of a man in a boxing stance and asked why they had a poster of Muhammad Ali on the wall. They didn’t, he was told: It was Mandela. It was just part of what would be an enlightening journey in making the new documentary, “Troublemaker,” which has its world premiere Tuesday at the Sundance Film Festival. “He evolved into the Mandela that we all know and love,” Fuqua said. “The troublemaker allows you to sort of see him not just a mythical character or as a global icon, but as a fallible human being, someone who became a great leader, who in the beginning was a rebel, if you will, and who was willing to engage in violence at some point, if necessary, for the greater good.” The film uses Mandela’s own voice, drawn from over …

Peter Thiel comes to Paris to speak about the Antichrist

PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel in Miami, on April 7, 2022. CHANDAN KHANNA / AFP Peter Thiel’s visit to the Institute of France, a learned society in the heart of Paris, was kept secret until the very last moment. There, behind closed doors, he was due to speak at a meeting of members of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, a working group intended to discuss “the future of democracy.” The group, chaired by former minister Hervé Gaymard, has previously interviewed 25 figures, all French, mainly legal scholars, political scientists and historians. Even Xavier Darcos, chancellor of the Institute of France, who oversees all five of its academies, was only informed of Thiel’s invitation at the last minute. The invitation has caused a stir within the institution, not only because Thiel, the American billionaire who co-founded the online payment system PayPal and Palantir Technologies, a data analytics giant that works for many governments, is one of the biggest investors in the American tech sector. Rather, it is Thiel’s political ideas, which openly contest democracy, that …

Edward Norton, Olivia Wilde Speak Out Against ICE at Sundance

As protests continue in Minneapolis after a Border Patrol agent shot and killed anti-ICE protester Alex Pretti, attendees of the Sundance Film Festival are speaking out against the lethal actions of law enforcement and the continued attacks on protesters. Talent, including Olivia Wilde, Zoey Deutch and Natalie Portman, have been wearing “ICE Out” pins to festival premieres and events. “We’re all here getting to celebrate something really beautiful and hopeful in film storytelling. But the world is hurting right now, and this country is hurting. And it’s appalling,” Wilde said on the carpet to Variety before the Friday night premiere of her film The Invite. Edward Norton, who is in Park City for Wilde’s dinner party-set movie, was at The Hollywood Reporter’s studio discussing the subject of small talk with his co-stars Wilde and Seth Rogen. “These days it’s: ’What are we gonna do about mass Gestapo shooting American citizens?,’ Norton said, acknowledging the difficulty of light conversation in light of current events. “We are sitting here talking about movies while an illegal army is …
