EU Parliament’s reputation at stake in access debate, new anti-fraud chief says – POLITICO

Klement’s push for clarity over the scope of OLAF’s access comes ahead of an anticipated EU review later this year of rules governing the watchdog’s work, part of a broader revamp aimed at improving fraud prevention in Europe. It comes amid wider scrutiny of how EU institutions handle allegations of corruption and misconduct. The issue came into sharp focus during the 2022 corruption scandal known as Qatargate, a Belgian probe into alleged attempts by Qatar and Morocco to influence decision-making in the Parliament. OLAF investigators complained at the time of being blocked from accessing lawmakers’ offices and laptops. EU institutions have a “moral obligation” to “embrace transparency,” Klement wrote in OLAF’s annual report for 2025, released Monday. The body concluded eight cases last year involving Parliament staff members, the report said. “We don’t have any problems with most of [the EU institutions]. With most of them we cooperate without any issues,” Klement told POLITICO. But it’s debatable whether the agreements OLAF has with certain institutions are “enough as a legal basis for the cooperation,” he …

New York lawsuit says Stake and Coinbase targeted child gambler for years

A New York resident identified as John Doe has sued Stake.com, Stake.us, Coinbase and related companies in New York State Supreme Court, accusing them of helping run years of illegal online gambling that he says started when he was still a child. The case was filed in Manhattan. It says the plaintiff began using the defendants’ platforms while underage, kept gambling for years, and suffered serious financial and emotional fallout. “This case is about the promotion and operation of an illegal offshore gambling platform, Stake.com, to target and acquire minor users, including Plaintiff,” the filing states. Seeger Weiss has filed a new lawsuit against Stake . com and Coinbase, alleging the defendants recruited and enabled a 12-year-old into illegal offshore gambling. What’s at stake for Wales in May’s elections? | Politics News

Labour has been winning in elections in Wales for more than a century – and if the polls are anything to go by, this will change in the Senedd elections in May.  A new voting system and an electorate hungry for change means for the first time in Wales, polls suggest voters no longer want Labour in power. But a new and clear pattern is emerging in the polls. Once dominant, Labour is now fighting for third with the Greens, while Plaid Cymru and Reform UK compete for first place. The most recent ITV YouGov poll speaks to this trend: Plaid Cymru is in first place with 33% – securing an estimated 43 seats, six short of a majority. Reform UK follows on 27%, with Welsh Labour down to 13%. If polling is accurate, Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth could be Wales’s first non-Labour First Minister. The Welsh Labour red rose superseded by the Plaid Cymru daffodil. But the polls do not indicate an overall majority for Plaid Cymru. No party has ever secured one in Cardiff Bay since devolution, and the …

Uber increases stake in WeRide as robotaxi partnership ramps up in Dubai

Uber increases stake in WeRide as robotaxi partnership ramps up in Dubai

Uber and Chinese autonomous vehicle company WeRide have launched robotaxi operations without a human safety operator in Dubai as part of a broader expansion in the Middle East. Riders can now book the vehicles through Uber’s app, with operations in commercial and industrial districts like Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Investment Park Second, and Jabal Ali Industrial First, as well as suburban areas and the maritime trading hub Al Hamriya Port. The service is operated locally by Tawasul, a mobility and fleet operator in the United Arab Emirates. The companies first introduced robotaxis to Dubai in December under a pilot program, but didn’t charge for rides and still had a human safety operator on board. The government’s Roads and Transport Authority issued a driverless vehicle trial permit to the companies last month. The deployment signals an escalation in WeRide’s robotaxi operations in the region. It also coincides with Uber’s increased stake in the company. Uber now holds a 5.82% stake in WeRide, according to documents filed Monday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The equity stake …

SCOTUS, birthright citizenship and what’s a stake for education : NPR

Any child born on U.S. soil has a right to citizenship. It was established by the 14th Amendment in 1868, and affirmed by the U.S. Supreme court 128 years ago. On Wednesday, the high court is set to hear oral arguments in a case that could narrow or even end birthright citizenship in Trump v. Barbara. The Trump administration has argued the “privilege” has been too freely applied to children of non-citizens. “Hundreds of thousands of people are pouring into our country under birthright citizenship, and it wasn’t meant for that reason,” President Trump said last year. If this constitutionally protected right is struck down by the court, it would apply to children born on or after Feb. 20, 2025. According to a projection by the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute and Penn State, that could result in about 255,000 U.S.-born children beginning life without U.S. citizenship every year. By 2045, that could add up to 4.8 million children. “Birthright citizenship is fundamental for child wellbeing,” says Wendy Cervantes of The Center for Law and Social …
