Feeling stressed? A happiness expert cracks the simple code to long-lasting joy and ‘inner peace’

You’re bound to hear plenty of talk about happiness this week. Every 20th of March marks the International Day of Happiness – an emotion we all strive for, in one way or another. Yet, looking at the data, there’s a clear disconnect: more and more people are struggling with depression, chronic stress and anxiety, all of which are fundamentally at odds with our idea of what it means to be happy. We spoke to Borja Vilaseca, author, happiness expert and a leading figure in the field of self-knowledge, about today’s obsession with the idea of chasing happiness at any price. “There is a real paradox at play today,” he says. “We see widespread unhappiness everywhere – manifesting as anxiety, stress, depression and a sense of existential emptiness – and yet, there has never been such a frantic obsession with finding happiness… “Essentially, we want it right now. This has turned the pursuit into a dopamine addiction; a hunt for instant gratification that provides a bit of short-term pleasure but doesn’t actually satisfy or fulfil us. …

Mum given six months to live after thinking she was stressed moving house

Lizzie Pitt with husband Al (Image: Brain Tumour Research/SWNS) A mother who attributed her migraines to the pressures of relocating was subsequently diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour. Lizzie Pitt, 46, experienced sudden nausea in February 2025 and her son Felix, then 10, discovered her on the floor “acting weird”. She put it down to the strain of moving home and “juggling” work and family commitments, but when she lost control of her legs during the night she was taken urgently to Airedale Hospital in Yorkshire. Scans revealed a brain tumour, which she was initially informed was not cancerous, and she underwent surgery to remove the majority of the growth. The full-time art teacher and special educational needs and disabilities coordinator (SENDCo) was subsequently informed she had grade 4 glioblastoma – and was given six months to live without treatment. She has since received chemotherapy and radiotherapy and electrical hyperthermia immunotherapy treatment to extend her life. Lizzie, from Hawkswick, North Yorkshire, said: “My brain tumour journey began completely out of the blue. Felix, who was …

‘I think we feel stuck’: Kate Pickett on how to build a better, fairer, less stressed society | Society

There was a moment when reading Kate Pickett’s new book that I realised I was underlining something on nearly every page. Occasionally it was an exclamation mark, or a star. Other times, she herself was doing something similar. “I’m sorry to say that is not a typo,” she writes, at one point. And then, in a later chapter, “I’m going to have to put this in bold …” It wasn’t stylistic commentary, although The Good Society is well written. Nearly every scribble was next to a fact. Pickett is a social epidemiologist, and deals in facts: “In the decade from 2011 to just before the pandemic, total spending on preventive services for families declined by 25%”, for instance. Or that half of children born in Liverpool in 2009 and 2010 had been referred to children’s services by the time they were five. Or that in 2023-4, England’s local authorities had only 6% of the childcare places they needed for children with disabilities (that was the bit Pickett wished to point out wasn’t a typo). The …
