The Bob Baker Marionette Theater Pulls Strings Back Into Zeitgeist

Not long ago, Hollywood’s beloved Bob Baker Marionette Theater was hanging on by a thread. In the final decades of its eponymous founder’s life — he died in 2014, at the age of 90 — the puppetry organization was in perpetual dire financial straits, its longtime downtown L.A. playhouse in decay, particularly as the rise of CGI sapped its workshop’s film and TV gigs. Yet recent years have seen the revival of BBMT, known for cabaret-style shows whose whimsical bygone aesthetic is drawn from vaudeville and carnival midways. Today a non-profit, the theater has been string-pulling its way back into the Zeitgeist, its puppeteers performing to a massive crowd at Coachella this spring, its merch adorning Rachel Sennott’s talent manager on HBO’s I Love L.A. Now, for its next act, BBMT is attempting to purchase the historic Highland Park stage it took over in 2019 and mounting the company’s first original show in more than four decades. “It’s a rare heart-warming story in the time we live in right now, this little glimmer of hope,” …

EU Parliament backs US trade deal — with strings attached – POLITICO

EU Parliament backs US trade deal — with strings attached – POLITICO

BRUSSELS — The European Parliament supported two legal proposals Thursday to implement the trade agreement reached last year between the EU and the U.S. by a wide margin, with amendments aimed at ensuring the Trump administration stands by the deal. In a plenary vote, lawmakers backed the measures — to scrap EU duties on U.S. industrial products — with a wide majority. Parliament negotiators will likely meet as soon as April 13 with EU country representatives to start negotiating a final compromise that could then enter into force. The measures are formally split into two different texts. One reduces tariffs on U.S. products while another suspends application of duty collections. The first was backed by 417 votes in favor, 154 against and 71 abstentions. The second had 437 votes in favor, 144 against and 60 abstentions. Source link

Andrew pulled strings so Epstein could use RAF bases for private jet

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor pulled strings so that Jeffrey Epstein’s private jet could land at RAF bases. A newly released email from the US justice department shows Epstein admitting that the former duke arranged for his private plane to land at RAF Marham, near the Royal family’s private Norfolk retreat at Sandringham. The exchange was one of three million documents released on Friday. This also included photographs of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor on all fours over an unidentified woman and emails to the convicted paedophile long after the former duke claimed to have dropped all contact. In March 2011, The Telegraph reported that Epstein had landed his private jet at an RAF base during a visit to Sandringham. Emails dated days before the story was published show a Telegraph correspondent asked Epstein’s public relations manager Thomas Mulligan, of New York firm Sitrick and Company, how the Gulfstream was allowed to land at Marham. He wrote: “Did anyone – namely Prince Andrew – help him get permission?” In March 2011, The Telegraph reported that Epstein had landed his private jet …

Trump Officials Loosen Strings on Federal Education Money for Iowa. More States Could Follow

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is giving Iowa more power to decide how it spends its federal education money, signing off on a proposal that is expected to be the first of many as conservative states seek new latitude from a White House promising to “return education to the states.” Iowa was the first state to apply for an exemption from certain spending rules after Education Secretary Linda McMahon invited states to request the flexibility last year. Such waivers have been offered for years but are finding new interest as Trump officials leverage all available tools to remove the federal government from local education. McMahon formally approved Iowa’s plan Wednesday at an event in the state. Indiana and Kansas have also applied to be exempted from certain parts of federal education law, and leaders of other states have expressed interest. McMahon told The Associated Press that the new flexibility will free up time and money now devoted to ensuring compliance with federal rules. With fewer strings attached, states can pool their federal dollars toward …
