AdultFriendFinder messaging tools — are they safe for swapping nudes?

There are few sites that bring together more horny adults than AdultFriendFinder. The site is so kinky, so permissive of nudity, and so kink-friendly that it refuses to create an app for the Apple App Store, because that would force it to tone down its wild side to conform with Apple’s app regulations.  But with a major data breach in its past and a growing culture of online scams and sexploitation plaguing the internet, it’s worth asking: is it safe to share nudes on AdultFriendFinder? And how does it compare to alternative sexting platforms like Snapchat and Confide?  We took an honest look at AdultFriendFinder’s pros and cons as a platform for exchanging nudes. The House | China And Clean Energy: Is Britain Swapping One Dependency For Another?

The House | China And Clean Energy: Is Britain Swapping One Dependency For Another?

Illustration by Tracy Worrall 10 min read5 hr As the conflict in Iran highlights Britain’s exposure to fossil fuel markets, Zoe Crowther examines fears UK’s shift towards clean energy might mean replacing one dependency with another For years, the political logic of the energy transition has rested partly on the promise of greater sovereignty and less economic exposure to volatile oil markets, unstable regimes and geopolitical shocks. But as countries race to electrify transport systems, build offshore wind farms and expand solar generation, another dependency is becoming harder to ignore: China’s dominance in the clean energy supply chain. In a surprisingly hawkish speech in Brussels earlier this month, EU commissioner for climate, net zero and clean growth Wopke Hoekstra said that the EU had been “too naïve for too long” over the role of China in Europe’s energy sector. He warned of the danger of creating a new reliance on Chinese cleantech after the negative impact of dependencies on Russian gas, and imported liquefied natural gas from the Middle East and …

Dementia Prevention: How Swapping Animal Fats For Vegetable Oils Lowers Risk

Some research suggests that sticking to a Mediterranean diet might lower a person’s risk of dementia by as much as 23%. That involves loads of vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil. A new study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which followed thousands of older participants for years, has suggested that the type of oil you cook with could affect dementia risk, too. “Replacing animal fat and saturated fat with vegetable fat and monounsaturated fats could serve as a dementia prevention strategy,” it reads. Why might that be? The researchers looked at the data from just under 6,000 participants who had an average age of 68 at the start of the study. None had dementia in the beginning. The study authors asked participants to fill in surveys about the food they most regularly ate. That included the oils they cooked with, but they also counted oils already present in premade food they consumed. Scientists split the oils they consumed into animal and vegetable fats, and also marked which were monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats …

Swapping animal fats for vegetable oils is linked to a lower risk of dementia

Swapping animal-based fats for vegetable oils is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia in older adults. Based on a long-term analysis of dietary habits, researchers found that the specific types of fat a person consumes correlate with their cognitive health later in life. The research was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Dementia is a progressive neurological condition characterized by a decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning skills. With global dementia cases expected to rise sharply in the coming decades, identifying ways to prevent or delay its onset is a high priority for public health. Because there are currently no treatments that can cure dementia, medical professionals frequently look to modifiable lifestyle factors to help preserve cognitive function. Diet is one of the most prominent of these factors, but the relationship between dietary fat intake and dementia has remained unclear. Fat is an essential nutrient for the human body, particularly for the brain, which is composed largely of fatty tissue. Certain fats are needed to build cellular membranes, clear away harmful …

Why Stylish Guys Are Swapping Their Sneakers and Boots for Approach Shoes

Why Stylish Guys Are Swapping Their Sneakers and Boots for Approach Shoes

It’s not just the big players. Smaller indie brands are approaching the category from a completely different angle. Paris-based label Village PM, for example, has taken cues from climbing footwear and applied them directly to skateboarding. “What interested us was the functionality,” says co-founder Bram De Cleen. “Climbing shoes let you feel exactly what you’re doing, while still being extremely tough.” That combo translates neatly onto a skateboard, where the feel of the board and durability matter more than anything else. “The first thing we transferred from climbing footwear was a very precise, asymmetrical fit,” he says. “Extended lacing comes in to assist that precision fit—helping with what we call lockdown, the feeling that your foot is held securely by the shoe.” The Village PM team also developed its own rubber compound inspired by climbing rubber, built to be soft, grippy, and hard-wearing. Keen, on the other hand, has been doing this for decades. The Jasper, first introduced in 2008, has become one of the most recognizable approach shoes around, worn by every big streetwear …

How to protect yourself from SIM swapping

How to protect yourself from SIM swapping

It’s easier than you think for someone to convince your carrier that they are you and get them to port your number to their device in order for them to get your two-factor authentication (2FA) codes in order to bypass your security. We all know by now that using SMS for your 2FA is a very bad idea, and instead you should use an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or this open-source alternative). But there’s a simple step you can take to prevent this by locking your SIM with a PIN so that you can protect yourself from this nightmare scenario which could allow a hacker to drain your bank account or steal your identity. Why SIM swapping happens And how you can lock your SIM easily It’s relatively easy to move a SIM from one phone to another, which enables bad actors to get your 2FA codes. By locking your SIM, a code is required every time you restart your phone or toggle airplane mode — the carrier won’t enroll your device on the …

Swapping London for Liverpool in my thirties was the best decision I’ve made

Swapping London for Liverpool in my thirties was the best decision I’ve made

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more “The UK city with the best value-to-fun ratio.” That’s how Liverpool was described after being named as one of the best places for under-35s to live list in The Times. “Well, obviously,” I thought while reading this particular accolade. Scousers tend to have a habit of deflecting praise with a well-timed joke, but will always put the self-deprecation aside to agree that their city is more than deserving of any hype that comes its way. And right now there’s a lot of it about. The Times’ list placed Liverpool’s Fabric District as the second best spot in the UK for young people (it was beaten, just, by the centre of Leeds). A few days later, the same paper crowned the city’s central L1 area …

Swapping screen time for books boosts language skills in preschoolers

Swapping screen time for books boosts language skills in preschoolers

A new analysis suggests that replacing time spent on digital devices with shared reading offers measurable developmental benefits for young children. Published in Computers in Human Behavior, the research indicates that swapping screen time for books correlates with improved language and emotional skills. These benefits appear to persist regardless of whether the screen content is educational or recreational. Families today navigate a daily environment filled with televisions, tablets, and smartphones. This digital ubiquity forces parents to make constant choices about how children spend their waking hours. Because a day contains only twenty-four hours, time spent on one activity inevitably subtracts from time available for another. This concept suggests that the impact of screen time is not just about the exposure itself, but also about what activities are being displaced. Shifeng Li from Northwest Normal University in China led a team to investigate these time trade-offs. The researchers sought to understand how reallocating specific blocks of time affects child development. They focused on the “opportunity cost” of media consumption. Their work moves beyond simple correlations to …
