The Testaments boss confirms how many seasons he’s planning of The Handmaid’s Tale spin-off

The Testaments is already winning fans over after just three episodes of the dystopian tale – and now creator has teased that there’s plenty more story to come. The Handmaid’s Tale spin-off only launched on Disney+ and Hulu on April 8, and just four episodes in, Gilead has never looked more sinister as we see the world through the eyes of Agnes (Chase Infiniti) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday). Set in a preparatory school for future wives led by Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), The Testaments follows the girls as they come to grips with the world they’ve been born into, as they begin to rebel against it. The series has been given an 89 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes by critics, and is holding its place as the No 1 show for Disney+ in the UK. The Testaments Reviews: Handmaid’s Tale Sequel Wins Praise From Critics

The new TV follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale is already being hailed by critics as a worthy successor to the Emmy-winning original series. Adapted from Margaret Attwood’s book of the same name, The Testaments takes place decades after the events of the Handmaid’s Tale finale, but while time has moved on, things are still as bleak as ever in Gilead. In this new chapter for the franchise, the action is centred around teenagers at a finishing school for girls being primed for marriage – which has led to surprising comparisons to everything from Gossip Girl and High School Musical to Pretty Little Liars, albeit with a nightmarish undercurrent. Led by Oscar nominee Chase Infiniti, who recently won acclaim for her work in One Battle After Another, and Bafta winner Lucy Halliday, the show has already won a wave of near-unanimously positive responses from critics. Here’s a selection of what the early reviews for The Testaments have had to say… “In some ways, it is slightly lighter and brighter than its precursor – a kind of …

The Testaments boss confirms how many seasons he’s planning of The Handmaid’s Tale spin-off

The Testaments review: The Handmaid’s Tale sequel is a dark coming-of-age tale

A star rating of 4 out of 5. It’s been a year since viewers left Gilead behind for good, as the extended version of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale came to an end in the sixth season. Now, the dystopian epic has returned with a dark coming-of-age fable in the sequel, The Testaments. Set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, Agnes (Chase Infiniti) is a plum (a pre-pubescent girl in Gilead) ripe for the picking for an arranged marriage by one of the aunts at Aunt Lydia’s finishing school for girls. Groomed until they are ‘truly worthy’ of a husband (aka become fertile), the teenage girls – dressed in plum, pearl or green – are primed to run a household with training in the culinary arts, lace work and the scriptures. Daisy (Lucy Halliday), Agnes’ newly assigned pearl girl, is both the bridge to the outside world and our eyes into this alternate perspective on the regime. Raised in Canada, Daisy is an outsider shrouded in secrets. Difficult to trust, Agnes and …

The Testaments boss reveals “lessons” learned from The Handmaid’s Tale

When The Testaments makes its debut on 8 April, it’ll be almost nine years after its predecessor The Handmaid’s Tale first arrived on screens – a launch that picked up eight Primetime Emmy awards, a raft of glowing reviews and a legion of loyal fans. But the mood began to waver as some critics, and a portion of the viewership, took issue with the unrelenting, often nauseating amount of violence directed at its female characters, frequently described as ‘torture porn’. How did its creator reckon with that particular issue – and any others – heading into the sequel? “As The Handmaid’s Tale evolved – and we learned lots of lessons – we were very careful to keep track of them and then to bring them to bear on The Testaments,” show creator Bruce Miller told Radio Times. “We knew very early on that we were going to do The Testaments, so I think… and we’re in the minority as men on this show, most of our department heads are female, and a lot of them …

Patrick Radden Keefe tells the tale of a teen’s double life : NPR

A young man named Zac Brettler walked onto the balcony of a fifth-floor luxury apartment in central London early one morning in 2019 and leapt towards the black water of the River Thames. He didn’t make it. Brettler’s hip clipped the embankment and he ended up face-down in the muck along the river bank. A passerby found his body after dawn. Brettler was just 19, a recent graduate of an expensive private school, and the grandson of a famous London rabbi. The apartment from which he jumped was worth more than $5 million, owned by a Saudi princess and occupied by a feared London gangster and leg-breaker named Dave Sharma. Brettler had been living a double life. He’d convinced Sharma he was “Zac Ismailov,” the son of a fictitious Russian oligarch, and was poised to inherit more than $270 million. Not long before Brettler’s death, Sharma had learned the kid had tricked him. This is how Patrick Radden Keefe opens his gripping new book: London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a …

There’s one Lord of the Rings tale left to tell, but Hollywood is too scared

There’s one Lord of the Rings tale left to tell, but Hollywood is too scared

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien are some of the most beloved books of the past century, and basically responsible for launching the high fantasy genre as we still know it. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy is celebrated to this day, but every attempt to bring Tolkien’s world to the screen since then has stumbled. The Hobbit movie trilogy, while profitable, stretched out a short, charming book far too thin, and 2024’s animated feature The War of the Rohirrim made so few waves this may be the first you’re hearing about it. Meanwhile, Prime Video’s Rings of Power TV show has been all of fine, and this franchise deserves better than fine. (Prime Video would have been better off keeping their other, superior high fantasy show.) As it happens, there is a way out of this quagmire, but it feels like a long shot. The problem with modern Lord of the Rings movies Can I interest you in reheated lembas bread? There are currently two Lord …

Your grandmother’s ‘old wives’ tale’ for UTIs actually works – a gynaecologist explains why

Your grandmother’s ‘old wives’ tale’ for UTIs actually works – a gynaecologist explains why

If you have ever suffered from a urinary tract infection, you know how miserable it can be: the burning sensation when urinating, that constant urge to nip to the loo, and a persistent feeling of discomfort.  It is even worse when a UTI keeps recurring, leaving you feeling as though nothing truly works to prevent it. What is a UTI? Understanding the causes of recurrent cystitis in women But why does this happen? And more importantly, why do women suffer from more UTIs – also known as cystitis – than men? The answer lies in several factors: female anatomy, hygiene, daily habits and even your diet.  “Cranberry prevents the agents responsible for urinary discomfort from taking hold, making it much easier for the body to flush them out”  Integrative gynaecologist Dr Joan Matas Although UTIs can affect anyone, women – including those dealing with recurrent UTIs among other symptoms during menopause – are at a much higher risk. Our urethra is shorter and more exposed to bacteria like Escherichia coli, the main culprit behind the …

Trump spent several minutes spinning a tale about Sharpies to his Cabinet. The pen maker doesn’t know what he’s talking about

President Donald Trump described a phone call about custom-made Sharpies at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting — but a spokesperson for the pen brand told The Washington Post the conversation he recounted didn’t happen. “We don’t have any information about the conversation described. We’re proud to be a beloved brand trusted by so many globally,” a spokesperson for Newell Brands, which makes Sharpies, told the outlet. The Independent has contacted the White House and Newell Brands for comment. Trump launched into his Sharpie anecdote about an hour into his latest Cabinet meeting, where administration officials were discussing several pressing topics, including the Iran war and the Department of Homeland Security shutdown. President Donald Trump described a phone call with the ‘head of Sharpie,’ but the company that makes the markers reportedly rejected his description of events (Getty Images) “This pen is very inexpensive, but it writes well, I like it,” Trump said, holding up a marker. “But I can’t have the pen the way it was — you know what it is? I don’t want to give …
