Mark Humphrey/AP hide caption toggle caption Mark Humphrey/AP When RaDonda Vaught got her first speaking request, it had been a year since that day in a Nashville courtroom, when she listened as a jury read her guilty verdict for negligent homicide and neglect of an impaired adult. That was in 2022. Vaught was sentenced to three years of probation for administering the wrong medication and accidentally killing a patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2017. She also lost her nursing license. So Vaught became a full-time farmer. She and her husband live on a small sheep farm in Bethpage, Tennessee, tucked in the rolling hills north of Nashville. They sell eggs at farmers markets on Saturdays and supply meat to local butchers and restaurants. RaDonda Vaught tends to lambs on her farm north of Nashville, Tennessee. A Tale of Two Reality TV Scandals: How Summer House Compares to Vanderpump Rules’ Scandoval

Fans (including celebs like Rihanna, who unfollowed Batula on Instagram) have rallied around Miller, similar to the public support Madix received in light of her split from Sandoval. Both leveraged their heartache for gigs on Dancing With the Stars and in the Love Island universe, as well as a joint Sonic commercial. The hotly anticipated Summer House finale introduces spin-off show In the City, and kicks off a three-part reunion. Ahead, a guide to all of the key points in Scandoval versus Summer House. The Wondrous Tale of Lavender Wolfe by Karen Foxlee

The Wondrous Tale of Lavender Wolfe by Karen Foxlee

Some books arrive smelling of the sea before you’ve cracked the spine, and The Wondrous Tale of Lavender Wolfe by Karen Foxlee is one of them. Within a few pages you can almost taste the cold rain on a Whitby wharf in 1719, hear the mooring ropes squeak against the stone steps, and feel a small hungry girl waiting there for a mother who has gone into a tavern called The Spotted Duck and not yet come back. This is middle-grade fantasy as Foxlee best loves to write it. Strange. Tender. Hand-stitched with old slang. Strong enough to carry serious feeling without ever talking down to a young reader. For readers new to Karen Foxlee, her other titles are useful touchstones: Lenny’s Book of Everything Dragon Skin A Most Magical Girl Ophelia and the Marvellous Boy Each one of those takes ordinary children and asks them to carry an enormous heart through difficult weather. This new voyage is no different. The Story, Without Giving the Treasure Away The setup is a sturdy fairy-tale hook. Lavender, …

Ty Wright | Bloomberg | Getty Images MEADVILLE, Pa — President Donald Trump is in China, courting new trade deals with Beijing. One glassmaker in the U.S. is warning that their top Chinese competitor exemplifies the risks of letting China in. CNBC last week visited a Vitro glass plant in Meadville, Ohio, with Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., who is the top Democrat on the U.S.-China select committee in Congress. The plant is helping produce glass for solar panels, and has long produced automotive glass. CNBC travelled with Khanna throughout the Rust Belt as part of his “Heartland Tour,” a multi-state swing through the country’s industrial heart to highlight the growth of U.S. manufacturing and the risks from China, the U.S.’s chief competitor. During Khanna’s visit, executives from Vitro aimed their fire at chief rival, Fuyao, and warned that without protection, all competitors in the glass industry would be pushed out. …

Learn the astonishing tale behind ‘(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66’

Learn the astonishing tale behind ‘(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66’

Route 66 was 20 years old and World War II had just ended when Bobby Troup, an aspiring songwriter from Pennsylvania, decided to go west. As it turned out, that drive in early 1946 did more than anyone could have imagined to establish the road as a symbol of footloose American freedom. Stories, photos and travel recommendations from America’s Mother Road Troup, 25 at the time, had already earned an economics degree from the University of Pennsylvania, written a hit song (1941’s “Daddy,” sung by Sammy Kaye), worked for bandleader Tommy Dorsey and served as a Marine through the war years. But to restart his career as a songwriter and actor, he believed that he needed to be in Los Angeles. So he and his wife, Cynthia, pointed their 1941 Buick toward California. They started on U.S. 40, then picked up Route 66 in Illinois. Along the way, as Troup told author Michael Wallis in the book “Route 66: The Mother Road,” Cynthia came up with a phrase she thought was songworthy. Bobby Troup, composer …

Mali’s tale of two insurgencies: ‘Jihadists seek caliphate while Tuareg rebels pursue autonomy’ – Spotlight

Mali’s tale of two insurgencies: ‘Jihadists seek caliphate while Tuareg rebels pursue autonomy’ – Spotlight

FRANCE 24’s François Picard is pleased to welcome Ulf Laessing, Director of the Regional Sahel Programme at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. According to Laessing, we are witnessing in Mali the complete unraveling of a broader geopolitical experiment. Russia stepped into a vacuum left by France, promising stability through force. Instead, its reliance on mercenary brutality, coupled with a shallow understanding of local dynamics, has accelerated the demise of an already fraught collaboration. The fall of Kidal and the coordinated surprise offensives reveal a dramatic shift in the balance of power. Jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels, which were historical adversaries, are now tactically aligned against a common enemy. Popular dissatisfaction with the junta coexists with a deeper fear of Islamist governance, creating a tense equilibrium that sustains the current regime, Laessing tells us. Meanwhile, regional institutions such as ECOWAS find themselves constrained, powerless to exert any meaningful influence as the Sahel region plunges deeper into conflict, isolation and instability. A Feminist Tale of Vengeance and Redemption

A Feminist Tale of Vengeance and Redemption

I love a good science fiction read, especially when it involves feminism and vengeance. I discovered my love for feminist vengeance stories after watching Lady Vengeance, the final installment of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy, which includes the unforgettable film Old Boy. If you also love these stories and have a fondness for mechanical behemoths (so specific), have I got a book for you. My recommendation is also ideal for fans of mythology and non-Western histories, if you’re looking for a broader touchpoint. This YA science fiction novel has everything: action, romance, Chinese historical elements, aliens, futuristic tech… Best of all, it has an energizing hero. Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao In Iron Widow, the relationships are complicated, the stakes are high, and our main character, Zetian, is ready to raze it all to the ground. Set in a futuristic world ruled by the elders and the gods, a world where women are oppressed and barred from intellectual pursuits, taught to be obedient and to live and die for their fathers, brothers, and all men, …

The Weird, Twisting Tale of How China Spied on Alysa Liu and Her Dad

The Weird, Twisting Tale of How China Spied on Alysa Liu and Her Dad

On November 16, 2021, Matthew Ziburis sat in his car in a residential neighborhood in the Bay Area stalking an “enemy,” as he put it. A veteran of both the US Army and Marine Corps, Ziburis had previously served in Iraq. But on this mission, he was working at the behest of China’s government. The targets that autumn day were American citizens: Arthur Liu and his teenage daughter, Alysa. Arthur’s personal story was an exemplar of the American Dream. As a university student, he took part in the 1989 pro-democracy movement in China. After the crackdown at Tiananmen Square that year, he fled to the United States, settling in California. Arthur poured a small fortune and an equal amount of energy into molding Alysa into a figure skating phenom. As a national champion at age 13, she bantered along with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, and was at the time on track to represent America at the Winter Olympics the following year in Beijing. Ziburis was surveilling the Liu home when he called Arthur, …
