Attorneys urge release of mosque leader, saying he’s been denied diabetes care in ICE custody

Attorneys for the president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque say he is being denied basic medical care for diabetes and has lost 30 pounds (14 kilograms) in the two months since he was detained by immigration officers. Salah Sarsour, a Palestinian-born legal permanent resident of the United States, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in April. His attorneys say he is being detained on baseless claims that he is a foreign policy threat, but they believe he was actually targeted for speaking out against Israel and for a conviction as a minor by Israeli military courts. He has no criminal record in the U.S., where he has lived for more than 30 years. Sarsour has Type 2 diabetes and his blood sugar levels aren’t being consistently checked, putting him at risk of organ failure or death if left untreated, his attorneys told a federal judge on Monday. GENEVA, June 9 (Reuters) – Several candidates running ⁠to ⁠be the next head of ⁠the United Nations called for a strengthening of human rights and respect for ​international law and bolstering the organisation through reforms during a debate in Geneva on Tuesday. Four of the five ‌candidates to succeed Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, ‌who completes his second five-year term at the end of this year, laid out their visions ⁠for the ⁠role at a time when the U.N. faces a severe financial crisis ​triggered by cuts from major humanitarian donors. The organisation is also contending with $4 billion in unpaid U.S. arrears, multiplying conflicts, and widespread violations of international law. After a petition was launched to save the axed Stargate series, the superfans behind it have spoken out on their hopes for the show – including their wish for another streamer to pick it up if Amazon don’t want to take it forward. Shane and Brian Montgomery, also known as the Popcast Brothers, have been campaigning for a new Stargate series since 2019 and, after news that Martin Gero’s revived series wouldn’t be moving forward at Amazon, created a petition which now has more than 60,000 signatures.
