Iranian authorities remain defiant, urge supporters to stay in streets | US-Israel war on Iran News

Tehran, Iran – Iranian authorities say the United States needs to do more if an agreement is to be made to end the war as they urge their supporters to maintain control of the streets. The US delegation at Saturday’s marathon talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, “ultimately failed to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation in this round of negotiations”, said Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the parliament speaker who led the Iranian team. A Mom Forgot Who Her Daughter Was After Losing Her Memory But Still Felt The Maternal Urge To Protect Her

Every parent has an innate desire to make sure their children are safe at all times. We worry about where they are going, who they are with, and what outside influences might come their way. Finding out your child may be in danger is a terror only a parent can relate to. For a woman named Nesh Pillay, that extreme anxiety is something she has to deal with much more than anyone else could ever imagine. Pillay, 32, was confused and scared when she recently woke up from a nap, unable to remember anything.  Pillay told Newsweek in October 2022 that she told family members she had bumped her head before deciding to take a nap. Though Pillay cannot remember the incident, it is what preceded the deterioration of her memory.  She has suffered numerous incidents of trauma to her brain over her lifetime, the first occurring during a car accident when she was just nine years old. Since then, according to Pillay, she has had multiple head injuries resulting in concussions. Pillay found herself …

SoFi Stadium workers urge FIFA to bar ICE from World Cup, threaten strike

LOS ANGELES, April 6 : A union representing about 2,000 food service workers at SoFi Stadium said on Monday it was demanding that FIFA keep U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement away from World Cup operations in Los Angeles and warned workers could strike if their concerns are not addressed. Unite Here Local 11, which represents cooks, servers and bartenders at the Inglewood venue, said the workers remain without a labour contract as the World Cup approaches. The union laid out three main demands to FIFA and stadium owner Kroenke Sports & Entertainment: a public commitment that ICE and Border Patrol will play no role in the tournament, protections for union jobs and working conditions, and support for affordable housing for hospitality workers. Acting Department of Homeland Security Director Todd Lyons has said that ICE would play a “key part” in the World Cup, a prospect the union said threatened worker and guest safety in Los Angeles. FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Representatives from SoFi Stadium declined to comment. Local 11 …

Claim sooner rather than later, experts urge, after £7.5bn car loan compensation scheme launched | Motor finance

Claim sooner rather than later, experts urge, after £7.5bn car loan compensation scheme launched | Motor finance

Complain now to be at the front of the queue. That is the message from the City regulator and the consumer champion Martin Lewis as a scheme gets under way to pay out about £7.5bn in total to millions of motorists mis-sold car loans. More information emerged this week about how much money the different categories of people might get and how it will all work after Monday’s announcement that an industry-wide compensation scheme for victims of the UK’s car finance scandal is definitely going ahead. Here are five main takeaways: Technically it’s two schemes. The plan was always for a single compensation scheme, but this week it emerged that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has set up two. Scheme 1 covers older motor finance agreements, those taken out between 6 April 2007 and 31 March 2014; scheme 2 is for more recent ones, those taken out between 1 April 2014 and 1 November 2024. As they are broadly similar, the FCA is generally referring to them collectively as “the scheme”. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) …

US lawmakers urge Taiwan to pass stalled US billion defence budget

US lawmakers urge Taiwan to pass stalled US$40 billion defence budget

THE SPECIAL BUDGET “IS IMPORTANT”, CURTIS SAYS “I’d like to personally endorse the special defence budget and tell you back in Washington, DC, that my colleagues are watching, that this is important,” he said. “We want to make sure that as we invest in this part of the world, that you are also investing and that we’re in this together.” Taiwan’s opposition-dominated parliament is still debating Lai’s defence spending proposal, though it has already cleared four US arms deals worth about US$9 billion. The United States has strongly supported Lai’s efforts to boost Taiwan’s armaments as part of a push by President Donald Trump’s administration to get allies to spend more on defence. CONCERN OVER CHINA PRESSURE “We are concerned by the increased pressure from Beijing, including military activity around Taiwan that raises the risk of miscalculation,” Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told the same briefing. Deputy Minister Hsu Szu-chien, speaking later at government-run weapons developer the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology in Taoyuan, said he hoped …

Exclusive-Broadcasters urge EU to tighten rules for Big Tech in smart TV standoff

BRUSSELS, March 23 : Google, Amazon, Apple and Samsung’s smart TVs and virtual assistants should fall under the EU’s toughest tech rules because of their growing market power, the world’s largest broadcasters told EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera on Monday. The call by the Association of Commercial Television and Video on Demand Services in Europe (ACT) whose members include Canal+, RTL, Mediaset, ITV, Paramount+, NBCUniversal, Walt Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Sky and TF1 Groupe underscores the battle between broadcasters and Big Tech for market share in a lucrative industry. Android TV, which increased its market share from 16 per cent to 23 per cent from 2019 to 2024, Amazon Fire OS whose market share rose from 5 per cent to 12 per cent in the same period and Samsung’s Tizen OS with its 24 per cent market share should be designated as gatekeepers under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, the broadcasters said, citing data from a 2025 market study. The DMA, applicable since 2023, sets out obligations aimed at curbing the power of major tech …

Democrats excluded from USC governor debate urge rivals to boycott

Four Democrats running for governor called on their fellow candidates to boycott an upcoming debate at USC, reiterating concerns that the criteria used to determine who was invited to participate resulted in every prominent candidate of color being excluded from the forum. “We ask each and every candidate who is in this race to recognize that if we can’t have a fair process for a debate, then we should all not participate,” said Xavier Becerra, the former U.S. Health and Human Services secretary. “We call on them to withdraw from this biased forum.” Becerra’s call was echoed by former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, state Supt. of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and former state Controller Betty Yee during a Friday afternoon news conference. The candidate’s request comes a week after some of them raised concerns about the criteria for Tuesday’s debate, arguing that it was engineered to allow the inclusion of San José Mayor Matt Mahan, who entered the race in late January and quickly raised millions of dollars from Silicon Valley executives. “The rules …

Politics Home Article | Red Wall Labour MPs Urge Government To Stick With Immigration Reforms

5 min read1 hr Labour MPs on the right of the party are urging Keir Starmer to stick with a planned tightening of immigration laws after Angela Rayner called the reforms “un-British”. The chair of the party’s Red Wall Caucus has told PoliticsHome that Labour will “never rebuild trust” in constituencies in her part of the country until it is seen as having tackled the issue. On Tuesday night, Rayner, who is seen as a frontrunner to succeed the Prime Minister, criticised the direction of the government in her most significant intervention since resigning from cabinet in September. Speaking to a reception hosted by the soft left Labour group Mainstream in a Westminster pub, she said the “very survival” of Labour is at stake as the party faces the electoral threat of both Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and Zack Polanski’s Greens. “There is no safe ground for us, and we’re running out of time. The change that people so desperately wanted to see needs to be seen. It needs to be felt,” Rayner said. The influential backbench MP also …

ASEAN ministers urge halt to Middle East war as crisis rattles energy and trade

MANILA: ASEAN foreign and economic ministers on Friday (Mar 13) called for an immediate halt to the war in the Middle East, and said the effects of surging oil prices and disrupted trade are already hitting Southeast Asia’s economies. Several members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have begun rolling out measures to counter the economic impact, with governments moving quickly to conserve energy, stabilise domestic markets and protect vulnerable sectors such as tourism. “We expressed serious concern over the situation in the Middle East and its impacts in the region, and emphasised the importance of the immediate cessation of hostilities,” Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma Theresa Lazaro told a press conference after a special meeting on the crisis, adding that ASEAN called on all parties to exercise the utmost self-restraint. The Philippines, which is chairing ASEAN this year, convened the special meeting as concerns over the Iran conflict deepened.
