Barney Frank, architect of landmark Wall Street reforms, dies at 86

Barney Frank, former U.S. Congressman Adam Jeffery | CNBC Former U.S. Representative Barney Frank, a quick-witted Democrat who gave his name to a landmark financial reform bill after the economic crisis of 2007-2009, has died, his sister Ann Lewis said on Wednesday. He was 86. One of the best-known gay politicians of his time, Frank served for over 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives as a member from Massachusetts and a liberal who gladly worked with Republicans. “He’s a guy you can sit down and deal with,” Republican Representative Tom Cole from Oklahoma said in 2011, when Frank chaired the House Financial Services Committee. Along with then Senator Chris Dodd, Frank spearheaded 2010 legislation that tightened banking regulations and consumer protections to avoid a repeat of the 2007 financial crash and subsequent Great Recession. Known as the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the law led to new rules on the previously unregulated off-exchange derivatives market, ‌and set up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to shield consumers from predatory and abusive practices. It was regarded as one of the main successes in Congress of Barack Obama’s two-term presidency. ‘Things would …

What Freedom 250’s prayer wall reveals about Christian nationalism’s true believers

What Freedom 250’s prayer wall reveals about Christian nationalism’s true believers

(RNS) — As part of the “Rededicate 250” event in Washington, D.C., on Sunday (May 17), organizers are inviting Americans to submit prayers for the nation through a public online “prayer wall” on the affiliated America Prays website. While the so-called rededication of the United States as “One Nation Under God” is drawing a great deal of attention for its fusion of politics, theology and nationalism, the prayer wall itself has received little scrutiny. A close look at the words found on the site — where Americans are exhorted to “share what’s on your heart” in the verbal formulation of contemporary American evangelicalism — offers a rare opportunity to watch what looks like real Christian nationalism. It appears not merely as political rhetoric from movement leaders, but as lived devotional language among the posted prayers, which seem, not surprisingly, to be entirely Christian in their orientation. The prayers on the wall are divided by categories like “Country,” “Military,” “Family,” “Healing” and “Peace.” Since there is a form that must be filled out by anyone wishing …

Trump admin wants to seize Catholic shrine featuring 29ft statue of Jesus for Mexico border wall construction: report

Trump admin wants to seize Catholic shrine featuring 29ft statue of Jesus for Mexico border wall construction: report

The Trump administration is suing a Catholic diocese in New Mexico to seize land for border wall construction, a move that has led to a federal court case over religious freedom at a landmark pilgrimage site. The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to acquire approximately 14 acres of land in Dona Ana County belonging to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces through what is known as the power of eminent domain. As reported by Bloomberg, the government intends to use the property to install fencing, security lighting and cameras near the base of Mount Cristo Rey. Federal officials have proposed $183,071 as just compensation for the tracts, according to the legal complaint. The site is home to a 29-foot-tall limestone statue of Jesus Christ and serves as a major religious destination. However, the Department of Homeland Security denied what it called “ludicrous” claims that the shrine would be affected. The legal battle centers on the base of Mount Cristo Rey, home to a historic 29-foot limestone statue of Christ that serves as a …

China’s Great Wall is being restored one brick at a time

China’s Great Wall is being restored one brick at a time

The company’s first conservation project was the Main Hall of the Hongluo Temple, a Buddhist temple in northern Beijing. Cheng was put in charge of the masonry work, and it was here that his story with ancient architecture began. Cheng later sought guidance from Piao Xuelin, a 15th-generation descendant of the Xinglongmen masonry tradition (of the Jing generation), learning about material processing, construction methods and operational techniques for ancient building masonry. Xinglongmen was one of the workshops that helped build and repair the Forbidden City and other imperial buildings during the Ming and Qing dynasties. More from NBC News in China Thanks to his solid foundational skills, Cheng quickly earned Piao’s recognition and became the 16th-generation inheritor of the Xinglongmen masonry tradition, receiving the master’s true teachings. In 2004, Cheng took on his first large-scale Great Wall restoration project — the Huanghuacheng section in Huairou. His repair expertise has taken him from Huanghuacheng to other sections of the wall, including Mutianyu, Qinglong Gorge and Yaoziyu, and he finally started the restoration work in Jiankou in …

Catholic diocese fights Trump administration plan to seize pilgrimage site for border wall

Catholic diocese fights Trump administration plan to seize pilgrimage site for border wall

(RNS) — The Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces, New Mexico, signaled in a legal filing it intends to fight the Trump administration’s fast-moving attempts to seize its land through eminent domain to extend the southern border wall. The land targeted by the federal government is at the base of Mount Cristo Rey, a mountain and pilgrimage site topped by a 29-foot-tall limestone statue of Jesus Christ that dates back to 1940. The diocese said the border wall would obstruct pilgrimage routes. “The erection of a border wall through or along this holy site could irreparably damage its religious and cultural sanctity, obstruct pilgrimage routes, and transfer sacred space into a symbol of division,” the Diocese of Las Cruces said, according to legal documents.  Seizing the land or constructing physical barriers would “constitute a significant infringement on religious freedom and the rights of worship, which are protected under both the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” the diocese wrote in the legal filing Friday (May 8).  The day prior (May …

Researchers explain mysterious cause of 6,000-kilometer cloud wall on Venus

Researchers explain mysterious cause of 6,000-kilometer cloud wall on Venus

A sharply defined cloud front on Venus, stretching about 6,000 kilometers across, has puzzled planetary scientists since Japan’s Akatsuki spacecraft spotted it sweeping around the planet’s equator. The feature looked too large, too persistent, and too strange to fit neatly into existing models of Venusian weather. Now a team that included the University of Tokyo says it has pinned down the cause: the largest known hydraulic jump in the solar system. That phrase may sound exotic, but the basic effect is familiar. It happens when a fast, shallow flow suddenly slows and deepens. In a kitchen sink, you can watch water spread thinly from the faucet before it abruptly thickens into a raised ring. On Venus, researchers say, something similar happens in the atmosphere. However, it occurs on a planetary scale and inside a world wrapped in sulfuric acid clouds. “We identified the phenomena, but for years we couldn’t understand it,” said Professor Takeshi Imamura of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. “However, thanks to this research, we’re now able to show …

Another Wall Street Giant Is Plotting Its Escape From Mamdani’s New York City: Report

It looks like Citadel isn’t the only Wall Street giant looking for the exits as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) continues his commie Robinhood thing on the city’s richest. Fox Business Network’s Charles Gasparino reported Wednesday that the Manhattan-headquartered private equity giant Apollo is preparing to establish what insiders describe as a “second headquarters” in either Florida or Texas. A formal announcement on the location is expected within weeks. The move would build on Apollo’s earlier internal memo to employees signaling plans for significant future growth outside its longtime New York base, amid a broader migration of financial firms toward business-friendly states in the South. Gasparino reports: The new outpost could eventually become home to as many as 1,000 employees over time – in line with Apollo’s current headcount in New York, the sources said. The buyout firm currently employs more than 6,000 worldwide. Apollo paid a whopping $1.276 billion in income taxes in 2025, up from $1.062 billion the year before. While filings don’t break down how much of that went to …

Wall Street Journal story on Trump and Epstein took six months and 20 staff

Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Emma Tucker and Mill Media founder Joshi Herrmann both appearing at Sir Harry Evans Investigative Journalism Summit in London on 6 May 2026. Pictures: Reuters/Chris J Ratcliffe Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Emma Tucker has said her team “ran towards the fire” with their reporting linking Donald Trump to Epstein’s birthday book – but that “at least” his legal threat came after publication and not before. Trump attempted to claim $10bn in damages over reporting that said he had sent a bawdy birthday card to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The lawsuit was dismissed in April as a judge found he had not proved the WSJ had acted with actual malice as required under US defamation law. Speaking at Truth Tellers, The Sir Harry Evans Investigative Journalism Summit in London on Wednesday, Tucker joked that the story had caused “a whole world of pain”. She said: “It’s a really good example of why the kind of journalism that we’re all endeavouring to keep alive and focus on is challenged, because it took an …
