Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson reveal major Cape Fear changes

Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson have opened up about how Apple TV’s new Cape Fear series reinvents the classic thriller – including one major change to the Bowden family. The new 10-part psychological horror thriller stars Javier Bardem as Max Cady, the notorious killer previously played by Robert Mitchum and Robert De Niro, while Adams and Wilson play married attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden. In previous versions of the story, the central lawyer figure was Sam Bowden, played by Gregory Peck in the 1962 film and Nick Nolte in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake. But in this version, there is no Sam Bowden – with creator Nick Antosca instead introducing Anna and Tom as two new characters whose lives, marriage and family are bound up in Cady’s conviction. Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Adams explained that making Anna the defence attorney opens up a very different dynamic between her character and Cady. “I think us flipping the gender on the defence attorney allows for a lot more complication and power dynamic between the two of them,” …

Crossing the Wine Dark Sea by Emily Wilson review – a masterclass in translation | Classics

Emily Wilson’s translations of the Odyssey in 2017 and the Iliad in 2023 are now the standard English-language versions, acclaimed for their conciseness and fluency. Her infatuation with Homer began at the age of eight, when her primary school put on a production of the Odyssey, with her in the role of Athena, and the excitement hasn’t worn off. You can question some of the choices she makes in her translations (she questions them herself), but you can’t doubt the months and years she has spent finding the “least bad” compromises. Her new book is a series of essays on the challenges of translation and the pleasures and insights to be gained from reading the classics. She is fascinated by how far the ancient world intersects with the modern. Aeschylus, Demosthenes, Catullus and Aristophanes are here but so are Spike Lee, Erica Jong, PG Wodehouse’s Jeeves (a last link to the clever servants in Roman comedy) and Boris Johnson (“an incompetent drunkard” who somehow passed as an intellectual “on the basis of his ability to …

A’ja Wilson Is Going for GOAT Status: “I Want to Prove That I’m the Best”

Even off the court, Wilson reigns. Her first Nike shoe, the A’One, sold out within minutes in 2025. Wilson took its sister, the Nike A’Two, for a European tour this spring. She’s walking carpets and trying out voice acting; her appearance on Hot Ones went viral after she stopped to pray for deliverance from the spicy wings. Becky Hammon, who’s been coaching the Aces since 2022, has seen the change in her star player. “She went from a young girl to a woman” over the last few years, says Hammon. “Her work ethic, her groundedness—she just has all the pieces. She holds the locker room accountable, and she can only do that when she’s holding herself to the highest standard.” Wilson’s height and regal bearing make her an ideal conduit for bold fashion; you’d be hard-pressed to find another athlete who can wear head-to-toe Rick Owens as credibly as she does. On the trip for the Nike A’Two, Wilson posed in Jacquemus outside of the Louvre Pyramid by I.M. Pei. Though Wilson has been in …

‘I Couldn’t Have Done It Without You’ | Frances Wilson, Chandler Fritz

Halfway through her review of Liza Minnelli’s memoir, in our May 28 issue, Frances Wilson talks about love. Minnelli, she writes, has the “capacity to fall in love instantly, as though hypnotized.” This kind of helpless love is a trait that seems to unite many of the subjects Wilson has written about in the Review. Sybille Bedford’s “hunger for love was insatiable”; Patricia Highsmith could fall “in love at first sight and she could fall in love several times in one night.” In the Mitford family, the women “fell in love with their masters, whom they then worshiped,” and in Iris Murdoch’s world, “falling in love always happens instantly.” It also provides Wilson a window into her subjects’ deeper concerns, whether it’s George Orwell’s love for roses demonstrating the value he gave to pleasure or Minnelli’s love for her mother reflecting her fear of becoming her. This is not to say that love defines these people, but it certainly sets the stage. “Enter Minnelli’s ghoulish fourth husband,” Wilson writes, “the one we have all been …

The legal battles centres on Wilson’s 2024 directorial debut The Deb, a musical about two Australian teenagers attending a debutantes’ ball. Lead actor Charlotte MacInnes, 27, is suing the Bridesmaids star for defamation after Wilson said in a social media post that MacInnes made and later withdrew a sexual harassment complaint against Amanda Ghost, a producer on the film, in order to further her own career. MacInnes denies making the complaint. The posts in question claimed that MacInnes had initially confided in Wilson, stating that she felt uncomfortable when Ghost asked to have a shower and bath together, before later recanting her complaint. MacInnes denies making or retracting the complaint. She said she was not uncomfortable when …

Mommie Dearest | Frances Wilson

On the night of November 8, 1964, five years before her death at age forty-seven from an “incautious self-overdosage” of sleeping pills, Judy Garland costarred with Liza Minnelli in a concert at the London Palladium. It had been a difficult year for Garland, to put it mildly. On January 22 The Judy Garland Show was canceled after only one season, and on February 8 she was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital after being found on the floor with cuts on her face. In March she was sued by a hotel for an unpaid bill dating back to 1959, and in April she was charged $69,000 in legal fees for renovations to her house on Rockingham Drive in Brentwood, California. Her agent David Begelman, with whom she was having an affair, was embezzling from her, and she was divorcing her third husband, Sidney Luft, while fighting for custody of her two younger children, Lorna and Joey. “Sid Luft is an animal,” she said in tape-recorded notes toward an autobiography she did not write. “I will tell …

Rebel Wilson’s courtroom makeover shows why style matters on the stand | Rebel Wilson

Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson is being sued for defamation by actor Charlotte MacInnes. The trial has seen Wilson arrive in court wearing various iterations of white button-down shirt beneath neutral knitwear or suiting, paired with cropped black trousers and heels. Similar to the undeniably demure, court-appropriate uniform she also adopted during her trial against Bauer Media in the 2010s, her courtroom aesthetic sits in stark contrast to her usual glittery, vivacious style. This isn’t the first time a celebrity’s courtroom look has diverged from their regular wardrobe. While it shouldn’t materially affect the outcome of a case, famous or not, how one presents at trial can carry real consequences. When a criminal matter proceeds to trial it will typically be before a judge and jury. During which, the presumption of innocence is a fundamental, but not impermeable, right of an accused. “Jurors, in particular, bring their own life experience and unconscious biases with them, and despite clear directions, people tend to judge quickly and often harshly,” says Emma Turnbull, accredited criminal law specialist and …
