A detective accessed police logs to find information about a bouncer she had had sex with, and then passed it on to him.

Det Insp Emma Gardner, 46, also accessed information about three women while working as an officer in Rhyl, North Wales, in 2022.

She denied having unauthorised access to computer material, but jurors found her guilty after a trial.

Gardner held various roles, including a position within the Protecting Vulnerable People unit, after joining North Wales Police in 2000.

Caernarfon Crown Court heard that she had become Facebook friends with the bouncer, and they had had sex twice.

Andrew Scott, prosecuting, said the logs had involved “a relatively minor complaint” and “tittle-tattle” relating to the bouncer.

In one message to the bouncer, Gardner said: “I have my uses.”

Gardner told the jury she had accessed the logs for a policing purpose. She said: “It was purely messages we sent each other. He was a source of support.”

She was released on bail and will be sentenced in early September.

Judge Timothy Petts warned her that it was possible she would receive a custodial sentence.

“These sorts of offences by serving officers are treated very seriously. I am not saying custody is the only option, but it’s going to be uppermost in my mind.”

Dept Chief Constable Nigel Harrison said: “We acknowledge the decision of the jury.

“The officer has been suspended whilst the criminal case was ongoing, and we will now progress with misconduct proceedings following today’s verdict.”
