I do most of it when I’m on tour and traveling and whatever. Someone else I’m inspired by, the more I speak, the more that I remember, it’s Pedro Almodóvar. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown or Law of Desire or Kika. His language with color and story is so inspiring.
I know as I get older, at least for me, I started actively looking at genres or filmographies that I haven’t seen enough of. Is there a genre, a director or some other area of film that you haven’t dug into that much that you would like to?
Yea yo’ve got lots that you haven’t seen. I’m always discovering new things. I’m trying to watch some new stuff. Like I watched Shiva Baby last night. Rachel Sennott’s so good in it and Molly [Gordon]’s so good in it.
Would you act again?
Yeah, I just did Molly’s new film Peaked. We were just shooting that in New York. I can’t say too much about it, but it was really, really fun. It was long days and nights. And you’re at the mercy of this wild schedule. Molly’s an amazing director, she’s so good at giving directions. Most of my scenes were with her so we just made really fast friends. I feel like I learned so much from that experience. So yes, I’d definitely love to do more. I think I’ve always been a little bit apprehensive because I love film so much. I also feel like there’s extra eyes on the whole idea of doing something that’s not my…Music’s my first thing.
People are more critical when you step out of your “lane.”
Well, yeah. Whatever I dive into, I really want to be good at it, so I give 110% into the experience, but it’s nerve-racking. I think it’s probably a control thing. Doing films, I have to relinquish a lot of control, which I don’t do in my normal job. And so for me, that was a massive learning curve. You have to put so much trust in the director. And that was what I got from that experience was I completely surrendered, I let go. I gave Molly everything I could. It’s really fun and it’s layered.
Is the character against type for you a little bit?
I think me and the character have similarities, for sure. I think we have lots of common ground, but I think also there’s a lot of emotionality and things in it that I maybe wouldn’t naturally tap into. I think there’s a softness to the character that I don’t necessarily have, but I think is really beautiful.
I can see you directing too, just looking at your videos.
Oh, maybe one day… I’d like to do that.
You have a leading man already, so that’s covered.
He’s the leading man in my life, but yeah, we’ll see.
You’re always all over the place, you’re always on the go. You’ve talked about “funmaxing”—how are we funmaxing lately? What’s been going on?
Well, it was my sister’s birthday yesterday, we took a boat to a restaurant out there. La Guérite, and they play live music. And then all of a sudden, I’d never been before, but it basically turned into a club. Today we’ll go to a nice museum. We’ll go for a nice dinner. I’m trying to get as much culture in as I can.
