Elliot Page has revealed that landing his next acting job is proving difficult after The Odyssey.
The actor starred as Sinon, the cousin of Odysseus (Matt Damon), in the Christopher Nolan-helmed epic, with his performance earning much praise from critics and audiences.
But asked on the On Film… With Kevin McCarthy podcast whether he is “getting a zillion calls” after the role, Page revealed that, despite being able to “do some of my best work now”, he’s struggling to get cast in projects.
“No, Kevin, I’m not. So, if someone wants to call me,” he responded, before joking: “I know I get some pushback for being Canadian. I don’t know what it’s about, but—”
Page came out as a transgender man in 2020 and underwent gender-affirming care. When his casting in The Odyssey was first announced, the actor faced a barrage of transphobic comments that surfaced online.
The actor added that it was “a little tricky” for him to get parts in major productions for “obvious reasons”.
But Page isn’t planning on turning away from acting anytime soon. “No, I’d really love to do, ideally, good work. That’s what I’d love to do.”
He continued: “And I feel like I’m in a place where, you know, it is actually interesting when you ask me about maybe, I don’t know, if this is weird or too personal. But when you do ask me about Ariadne [in Inception], I had such a great time being in that movie, I had such a great time working with Chris, but I was also personally really uncomfortable. Whereas, a part like Juno, I was able to feel a little bit more comfortable and embodied, or something like that.”
He added: “But I feel now, ’cause that’s removed and I don’t have to deal with that in my acting in my performances, I’m like, ‘I feel like I could do some of my best work now’. I’m just relaxed. I’m not having to literally work through a performance that I don’t even know that I’m doing to get to a performance.”
Alongside Page and Damon, The Odyssey starred Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus and Robert Pattinson as Antinous.
There are also key roles for Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Himesh Patel and Mia Goth in addition to John Leguizamo, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal and Benny Safdie.
